“Because life after leaving isn’t better … so they say!”

I’m putting the question out there. What does this actually mean? What does it mean to you? When do you use this phrase?

Jeanette and I were having a chat  today – typical gossip and summer stories of course when I realized this phrase came up several times.

I’ve been to my fair share of what I call “high school parties” over the summer, meaning parties with people I went to high school with and I’m not surprised by the things I’ve seen. I already recalled in a previous post about an old classmate asking who I was, then throwing her arms around me and by the end of the night telling me we should hang out… yeah.

So I’ll start with my definition of living in high school.

Living in high school is when your whole life after that time period ie. graduating still revolves around the same stuff you cared about IN high school. You don’t progress, you have the same drama and you’re holding onto what may have been your peak period. It’s not necessarily a nice answer, but it’s my honest answer.

When it comes down to it, I guess there’s nothing wrong with “living in high school.” It’s the life style you chose to live, but hey! it’s not mine so at the end of the day… agree to disagree? No, that’s not right…

When you use the phrase “so and so is living in high school” what does that mean to you?

“It would literally mean someone is living in the high school.” – KL

“They still have the high school mindset. Ranging from resting everything on how popular or successful they were in high school, or keeping only with their high school friends. Essentially rabid fear of moving on to the person they have to be, and holding onto whatever they had for fear of losing it.” – MG

“It means they are living in the past if it was referring to people our age like they are living in high school times and can’t let go.” – KF

“…Like if i said that about someone I would basically be saying they like are still living the high school days…hanging out with high schoolers or going to high school parties.” – (anonymous)

“It would mean that they kind of had their glory days in high school where they felt safe and comfortable, but now that they’re out of it they’re not willing to change and move on so they cling to those glory days and it makes them kind of sad.” - KH

“To me it’s the same as saying that the person isn’t growing up and is acting like they’re still in high school…aka living in the past and not the present or just being ridiculous or immature?? It could mean several things.” – JS
