The turn of 2010 means that the unveiling of a new decade is upon us. Every year since the year 2000 we have been reading about the sexiest people of the year, best movies of the year, top albums etc etc.
However, when ten years go by, the lists get a little bit more ridiculous or …truthful. It’s okay to reminisce on the 25 most used words and phrases of the decade:
- Wardrobe malfunction
- Status update
- Tweeted (as in “I just tweeted about that”)
- “Cougar” to describe any attractive woman over the age of 35, who happens to be single, or any woman dating a man more than three years her junior.
- The “clever” blending of two words to create one era-appropriate word, like “Staycation,” “bromance,” “Metrosexual,” “Recessionista,” and “Brangelina.”
- “I just threw up a little in my mouth.”
- Date Night
- Getting anything “on,” like “getting my drink on.”
- All IM- and text-inspired abbreviations: OMG, TMI, WTF, LMAO, ZOMG, and the granddaddy of them all, LOL.
- “Hot mess” to describe anyone a little attractive whose sanity — or outfit — is questionable. i.e., Juliette Lewis.
- The shortening of words — which we are definitely guilty of — like “whatevs,” “obvi,” and “totes.”
- “That’s what she said.”
- Seriously. Seriously? Seriously.
- The word “amazing” to describe anything that isn’t actually amazing.
- “That’s hot!”
- Wuzzup!
- Un/Friended (as in “I friended/unfriended him on Facebook”)
- Beyotch
- “Dude!” (as an exclamation or a greeting)
- “What a douche.”
- “Voted off,” thanks, primarily, to the number of reality shows that vote members off the island/out of the house/off the show.
- “There’s an app for that.”
- Sexting
- “Like white on rice.”
- “I’m over it.”
