True Life: I can’t Disconnect

is MY life?

Blame it on technology right? It’s not my fault that my crackberry is capable of doing all the things I never imagined it could do. While I find that is difficult for me to disconnect sometimes, I know that I am not the only one suffering.

The other day Max and I were having a heart-to-heart when I consciously touched my phone just to check the time and immediately he shot back at me, “Put your phone down.” I did as I was told. “Now flip it over so you can’t see the screen.”

It’s not that I can’t be away from my phone. I can. I would just prefer to hold it in my hand (to make sure it’s safe) It gives me some kind of comfort  knowing that it will distract me when trying to avoid an awkward moment. It could be texting, imputing something into my calendar, writing down a note, giving an “oh I’m sorry, I’m running late!”

The most embarrassing thing is probably when more than one person starts to notice that you can’t disconnect. Before class today, I was having lunch w/ Nick and Stephen and when I got up to leave, Nick snatched my phone from off of the table and said, “She won’t leave without this!”

Starbucks Refuses to Be Average

The Starbucks in University Village recently underwent a complete facelift. What used to look like your everyday Starbucks now looks like a one-of-a-kind!

There was nothing wrong with the old Starbucks. If it isn’t broken, why fix it right? Turns out this was just one of many installments that Starbucks is planning for their locations. The Starbucks team in Seattle, led by Arthur Rubinfield, president of global development,  is currently testing out the renovations for a trial run that may lead to many more redesigns for locations all over the world.

So what exactly can we expect?

The design of Roy Street Coffee opens up the store to the community.

15th Ave. Coffee & Tea, a new coffee shop design from Starbucks.

- – Over the years, we have watched Starbucks grow into an enormous chain. They are all over Seattle and all over YOUR city even. The drinks are fine, but after awhile the locations all start to look the same. What Starbucks is trying to do is to involve themselves into your community by personalizing their decor to match your tastes. They have even disguised the name a little bit (examples above) so that they will appear to be like any other local coffee shop and not just “Starbucks.”

What do we think? Do we want the generic Starbucks or do we want something a little more along Central Perk lines?

Going the Distance

Xiong Mingqiang, 35,  was born with a deformity that would cause his head to be disproportionately larger than the rest of his body. This deformity would hinder him from ever being able to stand up on his own. Weighing in at about 23 kg, his mother, Wen Quizhen, goes to great lengths to provide her son with a normal life as best as she can. These include taking care of him daily and carrying him on her back in a basket traveling to visit his relatives in order to let him see the world.

“Because I’m dying to see what’s there outside. If I had sealed myself up in home without learning, I would even be mentally disabled,” said Xiong to China Daily. But Wen, who says she was advised by neighbors to abandon Xiong for his sake and hers, says any mother would have done the same thing.

Crawling and sometimes hiding behind his mother’s back, Xiong said he is more familiar with the aging woman’s shoulders than her face.

“I’ve seen close up her hair turning gray and back bending even lower. I’ve become very uneasy that one day she might pass away and leave me alone,” he said.

“But at that time, I will feel more sad for not having done anything to pay her back – all I can do is to sit and move my lips.”

“For now, I would rather stay in than ask to be moved outside – to lessen her burden,” Xiong said, patting his mother’s shoulders in a way to “massage” her.

But his mother thinks differently.

“As long as I have one last breath, I’ll keep carrying him and letting him enjoy every day,” Wen said.

How anyone could advise a mother to abandon her disabled son is heartbreaking to me. What an incredible woman and mother Wen has proved to be.

Michael Cera’s Character…himself

The first time I had my first encounter with Michael Cera was in Superbad. He played that shy, awkward, nerdy geek and everyone LOVED him. In fact, I think I still do, but I started to notice a reoccurring pattern. It was like Evan (his character in Superbad) was also Paulie Bleeker and Nick from Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Now I haven’t seen Youth in Revolt yet, but the trailers have showed me the same similar pattern. I’m throwing Paper Heart out because in it he plays himself. But let’s face it. He has been playing himself in every single movie.

So I have to wonder… does Michael Cera have a talent in acting? Is he a comedian? Maybe he’s just fooling us all because what we’re really seeing and paying for is his personality on screen.

In fact, Michael Cera has played the same role so many times that BuzzFeed has created a formula for him

I may be biased because I absolutely adore his movies. Another actress we should wonder about though is Kristen Stewart. Check her record.
