Reminder:

You have the day off this Monday for MLK day!

You know what else is going on? At 10 PM, MTV is premiering their new television series The Buried Life starring four guys from Victoria, Canada.

Before you just got that nasty taste in your mouth because I said New. MTV. Television. STOP.

The Buried Life is not what you think it is. And you should take my word for it because I haven’t watched MTV shows in a very long time. The Buried Life follows four young gentlemen on the ride of their lives as they travel all over trying to complete their list of 100 things they want to do before they die.

And if this makes any difference to you at all, MTV approached THEM.

Taylor Momsen…still a little girl.

For several months, I have been reading articles about Taylor Momsen. She spoke about how when she first appeared on Gossip Girl she was someone that she wasn’t. Really? The cute, smiley, chirpy, blonde girl wasn’t you? Apparently not. Taylor underwent a major transformation. She traded in her bright dresses for lots of black and let slip news that she was the lead singer of a band – a band that really rocks out a little too hard for many people’s tastes – and that she had a much darker side. She then basically put down everyone  in her age group by saying she was more mature than most of them in Teen Vogue.

“Most of my friends are older, too. I live a very adult life: I have two different careers; I’m on tour. What am I going to do, hang out with the high school kids?”

Okay Taylor, we get it. You’re really yourself now and you’re an actress, a singer, and a model. Essentially a triple threat and now you are with Victoria’s Secret advertising a new scent. But I’ve got proof that you’re still as young as you actually are!

When Taylor was recently asked if she would join in with other celebrities to help ask for donations for Haiti she responded:

“Um, right now I’m trying to just finish my record and getting through the last season of ‘Gossip Girl’ for right now. So not so much thinking about that … But it’s awesome that everyone is ya know working towards a good cause.”

Saying you are mature and being mature are two different things.

Why Yow Yow?

I realized just now that there aren’t a lot of posts addressing why Yow Yow! is here. It has been in the back of my head since the start of the year and since I reopened the blog. If I wanted to continue with Yow Yow for another year, I should definitely know the purpose of it and what I’m doing. As I’m writing this right now, I’m formulating the thoughts together.

I started reading various blogs when I was 16. I think I was really interested in the fact that news was circulating in another form and even quicker than for me waiting for the paper or the nightly news on television.

I’m not here to just post news and random things to make you laugh and waste your time. When I was younger and reading blogs, I was probably the only one in my group of friends doing that. No one could relate to what I was talking about or what I was interested in. I’d tell a close friend a story I read and they’d just be like, “oh cool…So what are we doing this weekend?”

While this blog is a creative outlet for me to speak my mind, it is also a way for me to share news I think you might find interesting. Sometimes you won’t find this stuff in newspapers or television. I’ve always believed that you can learn so much from people and that surrounding yourself with as much knowledge as you can is important. There’s a lot more to life than we all know and if that information can’t get to you, then I will do my best to make it happen.

Happy Friday everyone! Go do something that makes you feel alive today

Song of the Day

Miike Snow – Animal

Looking for new music? Go download yourself Miike Snow’s self titled album. It has been ranked as one of the best albums of 2009 by various lists and is one of my favorites! It is rare for me to listen to an album and enjoy every song on it, but Miike Snow has passed that test.

Dumped!

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a decent photography post hasn’t it?! I just came across a collection by photographer Meg Wachter today called “Dumped!” In it she uses her friends for models and they give up their rights to Meg allowing her to dump various food and fluids over their heads while she snaps their reaction.

LOVE IT. The above is Pepto-Bismol. yum.

“Free Your Secrets and Become Who You Are”

Frank Warren said that he has been deemed the most trustworthy person in the world. He is also the best listener.

It was such a treat to host Frank Warren at our school last night. He is kind and wise. Most importantly, he is a truly inspirational human being. For those of you who don’t know, Frank Warren created his project Post Secret in 2005. He invited people from all over the world to send him their secrets on a post card anonymously. In just five years, he has received over 500,000 postcards. Every Sunday, anxious fans click on the Post Secret blog first thing in the morning for the new batch of released secrets. With these creations, he has been able to compile five books. Five years under Frank’s belt, the project has proved to be a success.

Seattle University was the first school on his Spring 2010 event tour. For many people tonight, it was their first time ever having the opportunity to hear him speak, myself included. I’ve been reading Post Secret since I was fifteen and I can still recall my memories and experiences with this project. They range from the time I  invited the students of my high school to send in their own Post Secrets for our school newspaper to the time I sat in Barnes & Noble at U Village reading through one of Frank’s books when two little pieces of paper fell out – a secret on each of them from the time I sat in Borders on Black Friday three years ago tossing my own secrets into the books.

Tonight’s speech was truly extraordinary. I had heard a lot about his tour before, but tonight was much different than I expected. It was powerful and strong and unique. I imagine that each location he goes to is very different from the next. We were a quiet group, relaxed, but eager to make sure we heard every single word that came out of Frank. Thank you Student Activities for such a great event, and thank you to the audience for sharing with us your stories. Your strength and courage are extremely admirable. I think everyone walked out of the ballroom tonight with a very comforting feeling and an experience that we are able to share with each other.

Hands down…best part of the night was when Max and I got to meet him and have him sign our books and take pictures. I managed to ask one of my questions…

People rely on Frank for so much. Every Sunday, secrets better be up or something has gone wrong we assume. However, the project is so successful right now, there is no way he can stop. Here’s how the conversation kind of went…

Me: Do you think Post Secret will ever end?

Frank: Well, I’ve been doing it for five years and I enjoy it. As of right now I don’t think anytime soon…

Max: Would you maybe pass the reigns onto your son? You have a son right?

Me: Daughter.

Frank: I have a daughter. I don’t know, would maybe you guys want to take over and be the secret keepers?

Me: YES!

*****

Somehow Max also managed to plug my blog. The whole time talking to Frank, all I wanted to do was ask him for an interview for Yow Yow!
