What’s in a name

As children, we’re never truly satisfied with our names. On countless occasions, I wondered why my parents named me the way that they did. The name wasn’t all that unique and because of that every now and then when my name is called I almost always don’t recognize it because I think they’re talking to someone else. Common mistake really.

Now as I have gotten older I’ve grown to appreciate it. It’s my name and even though I sometimes feel disassociated from it, I think I owe my parents a big thanks for giving me a name that didn’t get me made fun of all my life.

It could be worse – a lot worse. I could have been named Destiny Hope, [Miley Cyrus] Audio Science, [son of Shannyn Sossamon] or Pilot Inspektor [son of Jason Lee]

* Ceejay Epton, a 22-year old mother, recently changed her name to include the entire alphabet. She claims that she wanted to teach her newly born son the alphabet and “for a bit of a laugh.” You wanted to teach your son the alphabet using your name? A little selfish isn’t it? The Bristish press has named her “Miss Alphabet.” Oh it’s nice to meet you…

My name’s Cappy and as a kid I always hated it because there is an ABUNDANCE of mean nicknames available for the name Cappy. I’ll leave them to your imagination, but hint: one was Cat Pee. Say no more.
Now, though, I love my name because its unique and meaningful. I think maybe all children just hate their names, then!
