My Favorite Hipsters

Ever since Dov Charney announced the hipster era was “out” several months ago, I became concerned. As a part-time hipster, I guess I don’t really understand how it can go out of style. Being a hipster is not just about the fashion or the music. It is a culture. It is a way of living.

Okay, who are we kidding? While I accept the hipster lifestyle, there’s still something about it that makes me giggle. I actually am amused by the hipster culture. While the rest of the world slash the bros at my school find that it is something to joke about, you’d be surprised at how ahead of the game they are. Hipsters all over have paved the way for various trends that began years ago, but are just now turning mainstream as described in a recent Flavorwire post. When I think of this, I am reminded of the scene from The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda puts Andy in her place by telling her that her retail store sweater was hand picked for her by the people in that room because they made that sweater what it was. I know that that movie has nothing to do with hipsters, but all you need to know is that the hipsters ARE Miranda.

Below are some of my favorite hipsters of our time today:

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been a bad ass ever since she made her acting debut back in 1994 with The Professional. Since then, she has blown us away with her acting abilities and even her rapping skills. She may have portrayed hipster-ish character Sam in Garden State, but we know that she’s a true one at heart. Natalie is a Harvard grad, vegetarian, and an activist!

Ellen Page and Michael Cera

Explanation necessary? This was every hipster’s favorite movie, but let’s get serious – every film that Michael Cera is in is a hipster’s dream. Keep doin’ your thang Cera. Ellen is simply an actress that I am glad IS an actress. She brings so much to her films and I have pretty much loved her in everything she’s done. Her character in Inception – I couldn’t even pronounce her name. So hip it hurt.

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling

Uh Oh. Should this post have been called “My Favorite Hipster Couples?” It’s starting to look that way isn’t it. So I have yet to see Blue Valentine, but from what I have heard about this film, it is a must-see. Both Williams and Gosling are hipsters in their own right and definitely have been hipsters before even working together. Williams‘ character on Dawson’s Creek was uber preppy and in my eyes, I like to think that being a prep is just a gateway to becoming a hipster. For one, her daughter’s name is Matilda. Two, she lives in Brooklyn. Three, she dated filmmaker Spike Jonze.

Ryan dresses hipster and belongs to a band he created called Dead Man’s Bones.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel

Whether they are together or apart, Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel are complete hipsters! You can’t even try to deny it. Gordon-Levitt has always played the shy, quirky, dorky kind of a character in films, but we’re convinced that he’s actually like that in real life as well. Deschanel on the other hand, is married to none other than Ben Gibbard and is part of a singing duo herself with M. Ward in She & Him.

Alexa Chung

If I could meet any one of my favorite hipsters, it would probably be Alexa Chung. She is my idol. The girl is a fashion icon as well as a television personality in the UK. Though her show didn’t take off in the states as hoped(despite watching it every day,) Chung is still all over the radar. Alexa Chung is a model and currently is debuting her collections with J. Crew sister brand Madewell.

Matthew Gray-Gubler

The only reason why I know Matthew Gray Gubler is a hipster is because I follow his Twitter. Aside from that, I am a huge fan of his character Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. I swoon…

Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos

Shipley & Halmos are my favorite hipster designers. Hi, I’d like to be able to afford your clothes some day post grad.

Rumi Neely

California native and style blogger of Fashiontoast, Rumi Neely, has inspired countless outfits from my closet over the years. I am in awe of the work she does whether it is through her writing and in styling.

Suchin Pak

I had seen Suchin appear on MTV a number of times as a correspondent and reporter. When I was a young teenager, I watched her documentary special on the network discussing her life growing up with a Korean background often times having to deal with many issues that most people don’t ever encounter. She’s fantastic and I’ll never forget meeting her last summer supporting a cause that I am passionate about myself, which is Seattle’s music scene.

Mark Hunter and Cory Kennedy

He’s the photographer behind the lens at every exclusive party and she is his muse. Hunter can be found typically with his posse at various events whether they are on the west or east coast, or around the world. For the most part, his photos are candid because most of them are snapshots from parties anyways, but that’s what makes them so great. All of my headers have been photos from Mark Hunter. Cory Kennedy is recently 21 and became LA’s it girl while she was still in her early years of high school. Today, she does whatever she wants, but she’s probably done more and seen more than you at 21.

Adam Brody

Let’s do some math.

If Michael Cera = Hipster and Adam Brody = Michael Cera (kind of) then Adam Brody = Hipster.

Andrew Garfield and Kirsten Dunst for Band of Outsiders

Self-explanatory.
