Remembering Television in 2011…

As some of you may have noticed, there wasn’t so much postage going on this past weekend. The reason for that is because I was recovering, but I also came across a post on Ohnotheydidnt about the television shows that ended this year. One of them – near and dear to my heart – was Greek. After reading that post, the only sensible thing to do was watch an entire marathon of the show starting from episode one throughout the whole weekend. So I didn’t write anything for Yow Yow, but I became reacquainted with a show I once loved and can still relive through NetFlix – thank goodness. It was a weekend well spent.

And now, here’s your second end of the year recap post of shows that I will personally miss.

Greek: July 9, 2007 – March 7, 2011

I was deprived as a college student from the Greek system and the only way for me to feel like I was not missing out on anything was to live vicariously through Casey Cartwright. This show is extremely special to me for reasons I can’t explain. These kids barely did any school work and their entire lives revolved around the Greek system social calendar. Naturally, I was envious. The show has taught me a lot about love and friendship and karmic synergy, but they all couldn’t stay in college forever. At some point, every one of them needed to graduate and it was at that point that I had to let them.

Hannah Montana: March 24, 2006 – January 16, 2011

Say what you will about this show, but this last season was heart wrenching. She came out to Jesse about her true identity. She struggled to get into Stanford. She came out on Jay Leno as Miley after taking off her Hannah Montana wig and in the finale she made the tough choice between starting college with her best friend or shooting a new movie. I can’t lie. I totally hosted a Hannah Montana series finale watching party for a friend and I.

Life Unexpected: January 18, 2010 – January 18, 2011
I saw some serious potential in this show especially since I was drawn in after the first episode. However, this wasn’t a series that I continued to stick with as time went on. I may have lasted a month or two, but after awhile I became exhausted with the fact that Shiri Appleby’s character was constantly messing up with Lux and Lux just kept hating her right back. They never resolved their issues! Or maybe they did, I just wasn’t there to see it. Sadly, the show ended, but it seems as if Britt Robertson has now moved on to bigger and better things with The Secret Circle – another show on my television lineup.

Friday Night Lights: October 3, 2006 – February 9, 2011

I got into this show late in the game…as in when it was just starting to air on ABC Family. I was keeping up pretty consistently and then the episodes switched over to ESPN and I lost momentum. When I have graduated, THEN I will complete the series because I need to see what happens to my favorite couple Matt Saracen and Julie Taylor. Yes, I’m that behind.

MTV Skins: January 17, 2011 – March 21, 2011

It was a respectable attempt. Really. MTV just can’t compete with the original UK series because unlike them, the UK does not hold back. Also, don’t even let me get started on the Parent’s children’s associations of whatever.
Two things can be learned from this:
1. No one can ever replace Effy.
2. Clearly not enough screen time for one of top breakout characters of the year, Tea – played by Sofia Black D’Elia.
Smallville: October 16, 2001 – May 13, 2011
Can you believe this show lasted ten years? Even though I stopped watching after the third or fourth season, it’s still a little sad to see it go. The earlier seasons were really quite impressive. There was something about Clark Kent (Tom Welling) learning about his powers for the first time and how to control them that was incredibly endearing.
Hellcats:September 8, 2010 – May 17, 2011

This show did not deserve to be cancelled! Now that it has ended, every plot line has been left unresolved. It’s the worst way to end a series.
Entourage:July 18, 2004 – September 11, 2011

I heard there might be a movie deal in the works so I’m not losing hope on the end of Entourage just yet.
