Macklemore – Same Love

It’s time to admit that I was wrong. And I don’t like to do this very often, but there’s no denying it this time. Macklemore’s latest hit “Same Love” has warmed the hearts of many and of course adds just a little bit more to the hometown pride I have for Seattle and Seattle music. When Macklemore first came onto the scene, I wasn’t really a fan. I wasn’t a hater, but I just didn’t see something that special and I’m not alone. The music snob came out in me when I realized his first EP w/ Ryan Lewis was compiled of samples from other artists. You might try and argue that some of today’s best rappers do the exact same thing as well, but that doesn’t make it right, does it? I put them in the back of my head and moved on to the string of up-and-coming indie artists hitting the scene. So what has turned it around for me? I read an article last night from the Seattle Met Blogs in which Ryan Lewis mentions how much their sound has grown. He admitted to the sampling and it was that little piece right there along with “Same Love” that changed it for me. Am I going to become a crazed fan after this? No, probably not. I was unphased the first time I saw his performance back in 2010 at my school’s music festival. I was nonchalant meeting Ben Haggerty when he made an appearance at my music festival last year and it became somewhat of a highlight. However, after years of saying I don’t understand the hype, I can now say… that I get it and it is deserved.

Enjoy the video y’all! It’s a beautiful one. I’m going to stop talking about Macklemore now though because we all know Evan Johnson could do it better than me.
