San Diego Eats:

photo 3 (2)

I promise this is the last San Diego post Yow Yow! will see from my vacay, but I am pretty excited to see it stretch out three posts! I don’t think we could’ve finished this series off without a food post, don’t you agree?

When it comes to sushi in California, I am pretty picky. In my eyes, nothing can compare to Seattle. The great thing about my friend Ashley is that we always seem to be on the same page for just about everything. Right off the plane, she asked me what I had wanted to eat and we were in agreement: sushi. It was the meal we loved and ate the most together back in Seattle so it seemed fitting. We went to Harney Sushi located in Old Town San Diego, which was surprising to me because that area is mostly known for their Mexican food. We ordered a lunch combo which gave up three pieces of Nigiri shown above, a bowl of hot Yakisoba and a roll for the both of us to share.

For dinner, we met up with my cousin to try out a new restaurant that she’d been curious about for awhile. Earlier in the week, she threw out The Smoking Goat as an option and up until dinner with her that night, all three of us had been checking out the menu. We knew early on that this wasn’t going to be a bad decision. We decided to order four plates for the three of us to share.

Escargot – and two for each of us.

A beet salad – my favorite!

scallops

Three scallops with the most amazing lemon and cauliflower risotto that I have ever tasted. I actually have issues eating risotto often because I find it to be too creamy or of a weird texture, but I couldn’t stop eating this one.

The ribeye which was perfectly marinated with duckfat truffle fries. I think if we had each gotten our own meals, it would’ve been too much, but sharing was perfect.

They surprised me with a birthday dessert!

The table’s check comes out in a book which other guests dining at the restaurant can write in. We spent an extra minute  to leave a special note for them!

Ashley and I received a couple of recommendations to eat brunch at Snooze. Even though we were given a wait time of 1 hour, we knew that it would be worth it. When we finally were seated outside, we ordered our mimosas and were pleased to find that they had a variety. I had the lemonade and Ashley the apple mimosa which was pretty much like a Hard Apple Cider. How Seattle of us.

I ordered my standard pick your own scramble with a delicious pico de gallo topping!

We’re not sure if it was because we were both missing Seattle at the same time and craving Seafood or if this was all brought on upon us because we were together, but Ashley and I ended up doing something really strange with our dinners this past weekend. We ate at 2 different seafood restaurants on Saturday and Sunday, but for the most part – ordered the same meal for calibration and because that’s just what we wanted.

Since we were already at Pacific Beach on Saturday, we decided to stick around and find seafood nearby at the fishery. The calamari was incredible.

Oysters in true Seattle fashion!

Linguine with clams! This is probably one of my favorite seafood pastas. Ashley also got the same dish, but with the red sauce. What I loved most about this dish was that it wasn’t too creamy and even after finishing off my entire bowl, I didn’t feel uncomfortably full.

On Sunday morning, Ashley and I were one of the first groups of people to have brunch at Heat: Bar + Kitchen. The menu items were a little bit more fancier than what you might find at Snooze, but we found that while we liked the food, we preferred Snooze more. Sitting in the main dining area, Ashley and I were the only people there. As more and more people started to come in we watched the hostess ask each party if they had a reservation. When they said no, she would pretend like she couldn’t seat them right away and “had to check.” There were only three tables that we could see that had reserved signs on them so Ashley and I found this whole interaction awkward. We even watched one couple get seated and then after not being helped or attended to decide to get up and leave. Smart. After being treated in a condescending way, why would you want to stay? Anyways, on a note about the food – the quiche was too cheesy for me even though the waitress had told me that there wouldn’t be much cheese in it and the fruit was not very good. Womp womp.

And on my very last night in San Diego before my flight, we opted for seafood once again at King’s Fish House. Back in Seattle, I love ordering baked mussels at sushi restaurants. It ended up coming out in a pretty large order than what I was expecting, but it was so tasty!

Half a dozen oysters are never enough for Ashley and I. Even after eating our meal, we decided that we probably could’ve just had an entire meal of oysters instead.

We weren’t lying to you when we said we had ordered the same meal twice two nights in a row. If I had to choose which one I preferred, it would probably be the linguine I had at the Fishery. This dish wasn’t bad, but it was definitely creamier than the one I had the night before. Oh if I could have any meal for the rest of my life…
