My Favorite Hipsters

Ever since Dov Charney announced the hipster era was “out” several months ago, I became concerned. As a part-time hipster, I guess I don’t really understand how it can go out of style. Being a hipster is not just about the fashion or the music. It is a culture. It is a way of living.

Okay, who are we kidding? While I accept the hipster lifestyle, there’s still something about it that makes me giggle. I actually am amused by the hipster culture. While the rest of the world slash the bros at my school find that it is something to joke about, you’d be surprised at how ahead of the game they are. Hipsters all over have paved the way for various trends that began years ago, but are just now turning mainstream as described in a recent Flavorwire post. When I think of this, I am reminded of the scene from The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda puts Andy in her place by telling her that her retail store sweater was hand picked for her by the people in that room because they made that sweater what it was. I know that that movie has nothing to do with hipsters, but all you need to know is that the hipsters ARE Miranda.

Below are some of my favorite hipsters of our time today:

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been a bad ass ever since she made her acting debut back in 1994 with The Professional. Since then, she has blown us away with her acting abilities and even her rapping skills. She may have portrayed hipster-ish character Sam in Garden State, but we know that she’s a true one at heart. Natalie is a Harvard grad, vegetarian, and an activist!

A Collection Part 21

Slowing down your computers…one image at a time. I was planning on saving this post until next year, but it’s been 3 months since the last collection! I didn’t think it would be fair. Also, I’m pretty sure that these pictures sum up my last fall quarter perfectly. Enjoy!

The Indie Pixie Dream Girls

Q: What actor or actress would you want to play you in a movie?

I have never been able to answer that question. For one, I don’t think any actress looks like me. A woman once told me in an airport that she believed I resembled the actress in Everybody Loves Raymond. Uh which one? The mother or the wife? Instead of going off looks, why not go off of personalities. If I could choose to be any type of character in a film, it would be the indie pixie dream girl.

What does that mean exactly?

“that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” [source]

Meet the girls:

Zooey Deschanel as Summer Hathaway in 500 Days of Summer

Elish Cuthbert as Jordan Roark in My Sassy Girl

Song of the Day

Ellie Goulding – Sweet Disposition

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRn-tNb8-mA&feature=player_embedded]

I really like this song. It’s one of my favorites despite it’s over hypeness right now. Seriously I hate mainstream music. A lot. If you didn’t know, the original band that performs this song is The Temper Trap. You’ve probably heard this song in that one car commercial, that one episode of Greek (season finale of last year) and 500 Days of Summer. Twice.

Also Ellie has a very pretty voice, I know some people don’t like the soft whispery types, but I LOVE it.

30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days

If you ask a girl what her favorite movie is she will most likely give you the title of a “chick flick.” Most guys will almost never say their favorite movie is a chick flick. It’s a rare case, if any.

One daring man, Nick Waters, and his wife, Nicci (Nick and Nicci! awww) decided to take on this challenge of having him watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days. In case there was any confusion, only he will be partaking in this challenge, and he’s decided to blog about his experiences.

The rules were as follows:

a) a different chick flick will be viewed each night, throughout the 30 days
b) each film will then be reviewed—either in writing, via video, or both—on this site the following morning
c) the movies I watch must be first-time views for me
d) movies can date back no further than 2007
e) the movies I watch can be viewed online, from a DVD, or in a theater
f) 5 of the films will be chosen by myself, 10 chosen by a pre-selected “panel” of women—my wife, mother-in-law, and mother, and 15 chosen by everyone else

So what exactly did Nick learn from this project?

“Love is tender and any real relationship is based on forgiveness, compassion and vulnerability,”

Now the tables are being turned and Nicci will be watching 30 action films for 30 days! To read more on the movies he watched visit his blog here

A Collection Part 10

Image heavy. But absolutely necessary. It’s the last “A Collection Part…” post of the year! If you haven’t learned by now why these are some of my favorite posts to make, then you haven’t been paying attention.

If you were to put all of these pictures into a book and read them as a story without words, what would it tell you? I feel like every collection reflects some sort of a pattern from start to finish.  This is what I feel or am drawn to right. now. The truth is, I go through hundreds of pictures. Hundreds. And I choose the ones that stand out to me at THAT moment. It’s this moment right here. If I were to go over the picture above maybe tomorrow, I might overlook it. I used to say that my blog was an outlet for me to sometimes express the way I’m feeling about something that I couldn’t directly say in person. Sometimes I use these collections to do the exact same thing.

What have you learned about me so far?

The answer lies beneath the cut.
