Andrew Jenks, Will You Be My Best Friend

Dear Andrew Jenks,

I want you to know that at 22, I am truly aspiring to be someone like you. Throughout periods of my life, I have dreamed of having the opportunity to get to know people the way that you do and since I’m unable to, I live vicariously through your MTV television series. Since day one, I’ve been a fan – not because MTV finally put out a series that was both of quality and sincerity, but because Andrew – himself – is such a normal guy who is just trying to understand the people that walk among us.

In addition to being a young filmmaker and having his own series, Andrew Jenks led the way for being an advocate for young voters earlier this election season. It was important to me to have a figure like him be the voice of our generation and relay important details back to us via different outlets like his webisodes or his Twitter so that the rest of could stay informed.

I am in awe of people like Andrew and I hope someday that I will be able to have an impact much like he did for me. I am so excited for his new series to start next month in which he spends his season following three individuals with truly remarkable stories. One person he follows is actually from the previous season and a show favorite! Thanks for doing what you do Andrew and please continue to enlighten us on the little details that we forget every day.

Tuesday Morning Tweet

Well, hey! This was fun to wake up to this morning! Yesterday evening, I tweeted out the election coverage post that I had written about Andrew earlier in the day and he retweeted and replied back to me. I had to do a double take at my phone this morning when I saw it. Not only am I a huge fan of his series on MTV, but I’ve been wanting to set up an interview with this guy forever! The one contact I had to him no longer represents him so now I’m back at square one and am in need of a way to get this interview to him. Help a sista out.

Power of 12: Our Voice

pic cred: GQ

I can’t speak on behalf of anyone else, but am I alone here in feeling somewhat frustrated with the start of this year’s election campaigns? We still have a whole year ahead of us, but at this point right now, everything seems kind of like a joke, does it not? I’m not going to divulge on the details of my political views, but as someone who will be voting and who will be affected by next year’s election, there is a lot at stake here for everyone. It is draining to stay up-to-date on all of the coverage that is going on currently especially because this is a marathon, but I’ve realized the importance of staying informed. The first time I voted, I was 18 and I hate to admit it, but I was not as informed on the issues as I should’ve been. This time around, I don’t want to make that same mistake.

I know we all have mixed views on MTV, but I think the network actually does a pretty great job on the coverage. This year, Andrew Jenks is kicking off the election coverage and it is definitely worth watching. Check out the preview here and the full version on Tuesday, December 20th at 4:54 PM. (Tomorrow!)

Strange Days With Bob Saget

You are totally biting off Andrew Jenks’ World of Jenks. Please gtfo. You will always be Danny Tanner and you are not funny as a comedian. For that, Yow Yow! shows no support towards your new television series on A&E.

Get to Know Mr. Jenks

I promise I won’t quit until I get this interview back from Andrew Jenks, but for now here is his interview w/ GQ. The World of Jenks post has been a top post for quite some time now so I’m getting the hint that maybe you want a little more. Also, I hope you all are enjoying his series on MTV. It is an incredible show and I’d like to applaud Andrew for putting his series on a network like MTV to stir things up for our generation. It’s important for us to grasp what is reality and what is purely for entertainment.

Let’s start with the upcoming episode about the homeless teenager. I watched some of the footage. Where did you find her? She’s incredibly moving.
Our research team in San Francisco walked around with a Flip camera. Most people gave them the middle finger. But we found this one girl, Danielle—

Heavy D.
Yes, Heavy D. She was 23 and she’d been homeless for 10 freaking years and she’d gained a certain degree of respect because she’d been on the streets for so long.

You slept out on the street with her. Tell me the truth: Did you want to chicken out?
It was weird knowing I am sleeping but I’m totally vulnerable, more vulnerable than I’ve ever been sleeping. You go to sleep underneath a doorway, on a street corner, in the woods and at any point any kind of person could wake you up—a rapist, a robber, a cop. And so it was really tough for me. I would sing songs in my mind as I tried to fall asleep. I really got a sense from her of why she was houseless.

World of Jenks

By now, most of you [who have cable] have seen the previews and commercials for the new MTV television series World of Jenks. When I first caught a glimpse of the show early last month, I immediately contacted him to see if I could snag an interview. Andrew Jenks is a 24-year old filmmaker. At 19, he explored what it was like to live in a nursing home for three weeks and captured his experience for an HBO documentary entitled Room 335. On his new show World of Jenks, Andrew is walking in the shoes of various people and understanding what it is like to live the life of a rapper, a surfer, an NFL cheerleader, a gambler in Vegas, and someone who is homeless.

I sought out Andrew because I was interested in his project and wanted a chance to learn more about him and his show before the premiere. Sometimes my favorite part about this blog is the interviews I get to have with other people. Like Andrew, I am curious about the lives that other people lead, but this is as close as I will ever get. That may be the reason as to why I feel inspired by Andrew and compelled to tell you about his project. Unfortunately, I was not able to work out an interview with Andrew. I had been trying to hold off on this post just in case I had received his interview back before the premiere. I wanted to be able to give you both a preview and an interview before the premiere.

Earlier this morning, I watched the first episode of World of Jenks. It would be a little selfish if I kept it to myself and continued to wait for Andrew’s response. The first episode exceeded my expectations. Although I may not have gotten a chance to chat with Andrew now, I hope that someday I will have the opportunity to.

To view the first episode please click here.

On day one of filming, I always have an idea of what the story is for each character. I have an idea of what is at stake. But I always leave with a different perspective and thus a story that I never saw coming. – Andrew Jenks

The show will premiere Monday, September 13th at 10 p.m.  ET/PT
