Monochrome

Sweater + Booties – Something Navy / Slip Dress – Aritzia

Wearing an outfit where all the pieces were in the same color family? Count me out. This was a trend that I saw for 2019 that kept coming up, but never thought I could pull off. Not only did I think I couldn’t do it, I also didn’t have the urge to. Mixing colors, patterns, and textures are what is so fun about fashion for me. After seeing a similar outfit on [Arielle Charnas] I thought I would give it a shot. If it didn’t work out, the worst outcome is that I just don’t wear this outfit again. Maybe there was even an added boost of confidence because two of these pieces are from Arielle’s Something Navy collection.

Wearing black on black is easy for me. I could probably go two weeks wearing only black pieces without ever having to repeat. The monochrome look in another direction though was a challenge I wanted to take on. Readers, would you try it? If so, would you select something in cream/white/black or a bolder color?

What To Wear: Ringing In A New Decade

[Zara Sequined Velvet Dress] – $89.90

Left and right, friends of mine are messaging regarding our New Year’s Eve plans. What I’m coming to find is that as we get older, there is less and less excitement revolving around this holiday. One day, I really hope one of my friends decides to get married on this day because I think that’s ultimately the best way to celebrate this evening. As of right now the number one plan in the running is a lovely dinner with my girlfriends and then after that, a quiet night in. We are graduating to grandma status over here.

For those of you who still have the energy to get out there on New Year’s Eve, I wish you the best and that you look great doing it!

4th of July Feast

Denim – Citizens of Humanity / Top – Everlane / Puffer – Aritzia / Sneakers – adidas

It’s hard for the 4th of July to feel like a true event when you’re living in San Francisco. Rarely, will you ever get to catch the fireworks and it’s so cold and the wind – unforgiving. In the case of this year, it was even lightly sprinkling. Kevin and I didn’t have any real plans for the 4th this year, but I knew I wanted to celebrate one tradition if I could. Okay, so we didn’t exactly have a grill handy, but some kind of food in this family seemed necessary. We walked ourselves over to [4505] for a burger and some ribs. The line was packed so it seems like everyone had the same idea as us! Even though we didn’t intentionally plan it, I’m still wearing my version of red, white, and blue.

Pizza Babe

Dress – Aritzia / Cardigan – Mom’s / Sandals – Oak + Fort

My favorite part about summertime in San Francisco is how long the days end up stretching! Angel and I did an early dinner one Friday at Pizzeria Delfina (my favorite!) and by the time we were out, it was still so light out. For years, I’ve heard that mixing black and blue was a huge no-no, but not in my book. I’m not sure if it’s just that I don’t care or that I like the ease of wearing a dress and tossing any cardigan over it. Color combos don’t mean a thing to me unless it’s a huge clash and even then, it rarely happens. The forecast for this week is a consistent rain. I’m sure we need it, but I’d rather go back to these summer days!

Holiday Party Wear 2019

Gift of Love Black Backless Long Sleeve Bodycon Dress – $46

I did a first pass at the mall last week for holiday party dresses and while I wasn’t looking too hard, nothing called out to me. That’s never a good sign. I also realized that for the first time this year, I’m not looking forward to holiday party dress shopping. Mainly, that might be because I realized that whenever you’re hunting for something specific or under a timeline, you’ll never find it. Hence the reason why I found a dress a couple years ago over the summer months.

That only works maybe 50% of the time. Retailers prepare for holiday party season and create collections that come out right about now. The positive is that you’ll have a lot to choose from, but run the risk of having wearing the same outfit as another attendee. This year, I decided to try something I’ve never done before. Before writing this post every year, I always look at last year’s. There happened to be a dress from my guide in 2018 that is still available that I decided to purchase. Sure, it’s last season or last year whatever. It is, however, on sale and still something I’m interested in. Here’s to hoping it fits and that it has a generous return policy if needed. If all else fails, at least we have this guide.

Flirting With The Camera

Sweater – Aritzia / Skirt – H&M

We don’t get to spend a ton of time in North Beach, but it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods because it has so much character. There’s never a shortage of anything to see here from its endless Italian food, row of strip clubs, or being out and about amongst the community. You will never go hungry here. On this particular evening, Angel and I headed over here for an early dinner at The House. It wasn’t hard to find a colorful backdrop so we opted for two houses right next to each other.

This Aritzia pullover is easily the warmest sweater I own. While it’s a relatively new piece from the last year, it brings about new life to this skirt that I’ve owned since college! The combination of the two textures together are refreshing.

A Modest Crop

Top and Pants – Aritzia / Sneakers – adidas

The fun part about fashion is “buying” into the trends for every season and then of course, making them last and last beyond that. When I learned that crop tops were back in for the summer, I immediately had my reservations. “Aren’t I too old to be wearing these?” The answer is yes. On top of that, I want to get the most wear out of my wardrobe so everything I buy has to be appropriate for work as well. It gets tricky sometimes and crop tops, even at the mention of it, seemed out of the question.

I purchased this short-sleeved crop a mere couple of years ago because of an outfit I saw a girl wearing on Instagram. In fact, I had to create that exact outfit and even bought my most expensive Citizens of Humanity denim jeans to make the look work. I’ve worn that complete outfit a total of two times. That’s a story for another day though! This look is an interesting one though because it’s still unclear to me if everything works. We’ve got your casual top paired with some fancy pants and then sneakers. For the purpose of the photograph, I see it. My internal comfort level wearing it? Not so much, but fake it till you make it? I’ll leave this up for all of you to decide!

The Closet: August 2019

INC Swim Cross Over [Black Bralette] / [Cheeky Pant] – $33.77 / $33.77

This Closet post is a bit of a mixed bag! Because we still live for the summer, but yet we’re also craving a cozy fall. Labor Day Weekend is known for being the weekend we say goodbye to summer everywhere else except San Francisco. Here, it stretches about an extra month and I am all for it. This year’s fall 2019 trends might just be my favorite of all. Even though I’m not shopping myself, I’m longing for long-sleeved dresses and cardigans in all sorts of textures. I hope you all will do all the shopping that I can’t!

Winter Red White and Blues

Jacket – Topshop / Turtleneck – Mom’s / Skirt – Aritzia / Boots – Something Navy

A San Francisco winter won’t stop be from bare legs during this season. The thing that will though is rain. No one wants to walk into a place dripping water everywhere. However, if it’s even just a little bit brisk outside, there are so many fall and winter skirts that just won’t bode well for the summertime. One of those is my red corduroy skirt from Aritzia which pairs well with my Something Navy white boots (my favorite purchase of 2018!) and my mother’s turtleneck.

While the skirt does wrinkle easily and it’s tough to prevent when I’m sitting at my desk for 50% of my day, I don’t have time to care. Is there any other way to prevent this other than just having a constant steamer going at my desk throughout the day?

Chokers 4ever

Turtleneck + Dress – Aritzia / Choker – Urban Outfitters

There’s nothing more satisfying than when you can put together an outfit with your favorite pieces. In the last year, my sheer black turtleneck and slip dress from Aritzia have been on regular rotation. I never dreamed of pairing the two together, but in a very seamless way, it worked. The turtleneck allowed the slip dress to act as a skirt and the dress made this a slightly elevated look. It was perfect for everyday wear like going to work, but if I had evening plans, I didn’t have to think about a second outfit.

Typically, that’s what my schedule is like. I’m at work for a full day and by the end of it, I’ll catch up with friends over a happy hour or dinner or head to an event. That’s why it’s the most sensible thing when you have an outfit that can be versatile. As a recruiter, I try to be mindful of when my candidates are visiting the office and to make sure that I’m not in just jeans and a sweatshirt. For the record, in my work environment, that’s completely acceptable. It’s just not my preferred look to begin with. I have been looking at getting a choker for a while now, so I’m glad I finally found somewhere that has some I like. I know the choker is sometimes a hit or miss with people! But personally, I love it. I know a few folks that would be okay with me closing the chapter on this trend, but for now that won’t be happening!
