Ada’s Technical Books 2.0

For years now I’ve hopped in and out of bookstores on epic reading adventures. Whenever I see a new bookstore, I always feel compelled to go in and explore. This time last year I discovered a cute space known as Ada’s Technical Books at the end of Broadway on Capitol Hill.

I’ve been fortunate to become friends with the owners and folks who dedicate their time to providing the neighborhood with a space for the tech community. Offering happy hours, author readings, and many other types of events, I couldn’t recommend Ada’s enough.

Soon, they’ll be moving to a new space up on 15th next to Coastal Kitchen (I also heavily recommend this place) in the next couple of months. If you find yourself hankering for a fire place, good book to read, coffee, and good company, check out Ada’s.

For more details about the move and Ada’s in general,  check out their blog here.

In Case You Missed It…

I know y’all were looking for some Macklemore coverage in Seattle last night because one of today’s top post on Yow Yow! is about a secret show I posted about him from last summer! I was posting about yesterday evening’s event on my Twitter, but thought I would save the recap for today once I had full details.

Yesterday afternoon, rumors were in a flurry that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis would be filming their new music video “White Walls” on top of the iconic Dick’s Drive In on Broadway in Capitol Hill. Fans were told to keep this a secret – but let’s be real, people in Seattle can’t keep secrets! By 7PM, there were well-over a 1,000 people waiting for the music video to begin shooting. Of course, Macklemore and Ryan didn’t arrive until much later, but fans were dedicated and stayed through the entire shoot just to catch a glimpse of our famed hometown rapper. Here’s a YouTube video and some photos that I thought were worth sharing. All photos come to you courtesy of the Capitol Hill Seattle blog.

And while I chose not to make it to the event last night, I’m sure it was the highlight of the summer for many young fans. Also, we’re so excited to see our former Yow Yow! interviewee Hollis in this music video!

In Seattle News…

There was so much Seattle news swirling around yesterday that I decided to just make a separate post for it away from the rest of the pop culture news going on in the world.

– During Bumbershoot weekend, Kevin informed me of a new car service named Uber that had just been brought to Seattle that I could use in place of taking a taxi or the bus. So how does it work exactly? Uber is an on-demand car service that will pick you up from wherever you are and take you anywhere you need to go in a sleek black car. Known as “everyone’s private driver,” Uber is a service that is all about convenience and style. If you’re a member of the service, then your payment is just charged to your credit card so no more fumbling at your dolla dolla bills! This service is great for a night out, but is also the safer bet in place of a taxi or bus – – as suggested by Kevin.

“In Seattle, pricing currently starts with a $7 base, plus $3.75/mile distance and $0.75/mile time fees with a $12 minimum and $50 set rate for Sea-Tac.

To learn more about the service, click here to visit their website.

PBS is making a documentary that will highlight Seattle’s thriving music scene. The program titled “Seattle Music…something in the water” isn’t all that clever, but will feature some of your favorite local bands including The Head & the Heart, Shabazz Palaces, Pickwick, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a few others. The show will air on October 21st.  [Source]

– Storefront installations will be returning to Broadway this fall/winter! The last time this happened was back when I was a freshman and back then I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate it. Storefronts Seattle will take over vacant store fronts on Capitol Hill stretching from Pine Street to Roy and will be decorating them with creative and visually pleasing installations. [Source]

– Food trucks are rolling up with a sweet surprise! Street Wheels, a new hot pink truck parked on 2nd and Pine, will be dishing out their treats every day from noon-6. Their menu features a number of ice cream sandwiches, chocolate dipped ice cream bars, and a handful of your favorite classic desserts. [Source]

Molly Moon’s has been named the King County Executive Small Business of the Year! [Source]

– After one man stiffed a bartender last week at one of my favorite bars in Capitol Hill and then criticized her weight on the receipt, the locals went nuts. Something you should learn of the day: If you’re  going to stiff a bartender, don’t pay with a credit card. Capitol Hill locals harassed the guy via his Facebook to let him know that he is just not welcome back to our neighborhood ever again. This story got around so quick, I even found out on The Frisky shortly after the incident. Read more about what happened here and here.

One Month Later – Still Mourning For That Pita

When Pita Pit announced that they would be closing up shop last April, my heart and stomach were devastated. I wished that I could open my own Pita Pit and even wondered if I had the means to cover the pita franchise cost for my own store. While Capitol Hill has their fair share of late night eateries, I particular enjoyed calling up my old roommate at 12:30 (or even close to one) so that we could grab Pita Pit to go. I was probably their only customer that had my customized order programmed into my notepad on my phone, but now that they are gone, we can only look forward to what will fill the space next.

According to Capitol Hill Seattle, the spot will be replaced with Grubwich – a gourmet sandwich shop that will feature 10 specialty sandwiches (and ice cream sandwiches!)

Also, in case you were looking for more desserts on the hill, (aside from custard, pie, ice cream (x2), yogurt, and cupcakes) you can now expect a cheesecake shop called The Confectional opening on June 4th!

Things are looking up for Broadway!
