There was so much Seattle news swirling around yesterday that I decided to just make a separate post for it away from the rest of the pop culture news going on in the world.
- During Bumbershoot weekend, Kevin informed me of a new car service named Uber that had just been brought to Seattle that I could use in place of taking a taxi or the bus. So how does it work exactly? Uber is an on-demand car service that will pick you up from wherever you are and take you anywhere you need to go in a sleek black car. Known as “everyone’s private driver,” Uber is a service that is all about convenience and style. If you’re a member of the service, then your payment is just charged to your credit card so no more fumbling at your dolla dolla bills! This service is great for a night out, but is also the safer bet in place of a taxi or bus – - as suggested by Kevin.
“In Seattle, pricing currently starts with a $7 base, plus $3.75/mile distance and $0.75/mile time fees with a $12 minimum and $50 set rate for Sea-Tac.“

- PBS is making a documentary that will highlight Seattle’s thriving music scene. The program titled “Seattle Music…something in the water” isn’t all that clever, but will feature some of your favorite local bands including The Head & the Heart, Shabazz Palaces, Pickwick, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a few others. The show will air on October 21st. [Source]
- Storefront installations will be returning to Broadway this fall/winter! The last time this happened was back when I was a freshman and back then I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate it. Storefronts Seattle will take over vacant store fronts on Capitol Hill stretching from Pine Street to Roy and will be decorating them with creative and visually pleasing installations. [Source]
- Food trucks are rolling up with a sweet surprise! Street Wheels, a new hot pink truck parked on 2nd and Pine, will be dishing out their treats every day from noon-6. Their menu features a number of ice cream sandwiches, chocolate dipped ice cream bars, and a handful of your favorite classic desserts. [Source]

- After one man stiffed a bartender last week at one of my favorite bars in Capitol Hill and then criticized her weight on the receipt, the locals went nuts. Something you should learn of the day: If you’re going to stiff a bartender, don’t pay with a credit card. Capitol Hill locals harassed the guy via his Facebook to let him know that he is just not welcome back to our neighborhood ever again. This story got around so quick, I even found out on The Frisky shortly after the incident. Read more about what happened here and here.

When Pita Pit announced that they would be closing up shop last April, my heart and stomach were devastated. While Capitol Hill has their fair share of late night eateries, I particular enjoyed calling up my old roommate at 12:30 (or even close to one) so that we could grab Pita Pit to go. I was probably their only customer that had my customized order programmed into my notepad on my phone, but now that they are gone, we can only look forward to what will fill the space next.
According to Capitol Hill Seattle, the spot will be replaced with Grubwich – a gourmet sandwich shop that will feature 10 specialty sandwiches (and ice cream sandwiches!)
Also, in case you were looking for more desserts on the hill, (aside from custard, pie, ice cream (x2), yogurt, and cupcakes) you can now expect a cheesecake shop called The Confectional opening on June 4th!

Hooray. This is the longest In the News…posting I have ever made.
I owe you endless “thank you’s” for catering to my cravings between 1 and 2AM. Now that you are gone, I’m not exactly sure what I will do, but please know that you will never be forgotten in my heart or my stomach.
Best news of the summer? Yogurtland is coming to BROADWAY AKA Capitol Hill AKA my home! It will be the only location in Washington [for now] I screamed when I heard the news. I have nothing, but great things to say about this place. Last year, while I was visiting California, I had my first taste of Yogurtland and fell in love. There’s a frozen yogurt place here that I settle with called Shnoo, but they really aren’t on the same level at all. Sorray.
Instead of having to choose from one to four flavors [which is how it is right now] you can choose from up to 30+ flavors. You also get to choose the amount for each flavor you want (yeah you can have multiple flavors) and when you are finished mixing all of your toppings in you pay for how much it weighs. That’s all – so simple!
I am so excited to hear about this news and I think it’s really going to shake up things on the hill.
Is frozen yogurt making a comeback? Are cupcakes over? Maybe. Yogurtland will be here by the end of 2010 next to neighbors Genki Sushi and Panera
High 5 Pie, Molly Moon’s, Cupcake Royale, Old School Frozen Custard – Watch out.

Super Dave’s Super Sushi is opening the Pinto Thai Bistro & Sushi Bar on 408 Broadway this July. His real name is just Dave Nakamua, but the super just adds a bonus kick to it. Restaurant will be more like thai/sushi fusion.
- Popular chain from Hawaii, Genki Sushi, will open their second location in Seattle on Capitol Hill as well this July on Broadway near Pine. Conveyor belt style.
- Tidbit Bistro will take over the old Vi Bacchus [everyone's favorite, but closed, non-carding sushi place] Instead of sushi, they will be serving small Spanish and Italian plates.
Molly Dilworth’s latest canvas? Why it’s New York’s Times Square.Molly has been selected to help in promoting the campaign, Green Light For Midtown, which will help promote the city’s movement to improve mobility. Broadway in Time’s Square and Herald Square are the busiest in the city, but yesterday all traffic was shut down in this area so that pedestrians could enjoy their new makeover.
The concept, “Cool Water, Hot Island” spans about five blocks into Broadway that is set to mirror a river-like mirage. Dilworth will receive $15,000 for beating out 150 other submissions. Molly will also gets 18 months of display time beginning July.
Today, happened to be one of those days where I realized how much I loved living in Seattle. It was a gorgeous day despite my own rain cloud over my head because I missed the Outnet.com’s $1 sale on designer items at 3:46 AM, but other than that… solid. My evening was spent with my dear friend Megan as we ventured over to Broadway to Pho Than Brothers, through Cal Anderson Park stopping at Molly Moon’s Ice Cream and then hitting up the new Elliott Bay Book Co. The book store is amazing. The grand opening was yesterday and even though I missed it by a day – it really didn’t change much because the fresh smell of the wood was still looming inside. It was somewhat crowded, which is understandable for only being a day old. I never imagined what it would be like to have a bookstore in Capitol Hill nor did I realize how close it would be to my school. My only wish is that there were more tables and chairs because it would be a prime study spot. If you get a chance to stop into the store, take it!
I love American Apparel, I really do. I’ve never been to a sample sale of theirs, but I did attend a rummage sale last summer. It was a very peaceful sunny day out on Broadway. No one was in a hurry. There was no frenzy. Everyone kind of just took their time sifting through the clothes. Regardless of the slashed prices, you still want to find a good deal on something that fits and something that doesn’t have holes in it. Typical clothing eval.
Then I came across this video. People over in the UK must be deprived of American Apparel clothing to behave this way.
