Favorites of 2013

Favorite Style Icon: Alexa Chung

This should really come as no surprise. Since Alexa Chung came into my life, I have always been a fan of her outfit choices. I noticed last year, I selected Taylor Swift, but really – Alexa blew her and everyone else out of the water in 2013. With her new book that we are dying to read and collections of hers popping up all over the place, we are looking forward to what she’ll be bringing to the table in 2014.

Runner up: Kiernan Shipka

Top 25 Seattle Albums of 2013

DJ Marc Collins recently revealed his top 25 Seattle albums for the year and I couldn’t agree more with it. It’s a fantastic list, but more importantly he has listed out albums from bands and artists that I respect, admire, and feel so lucky to have worked with in my time with music back in Seattle. Congratulations to Campfire OK, Pickwick, Macklemore, and The Flavr Blue. And though I haven’t worked with them personally – huge shout out to my former boss in Hey Marseilles! I remember a time when I was 16 and attending shows every weekend. The music I liked back then was poppy and it seemed like everyone was in a band. Then without any warning, something happened and the Seattle music scene kind of shut down. It returned when I was in college with a completely new sound and a more exciting genre. Right now, the music scene in Seattle is on fire and I couldn’t be happier. I think about it every single day and while there is no interesting music scene here in Silicon Valley, I’m okay with being loyal to just one area. Below is Marc’s full list. Congrats everyone!

1. Timothy Robert Graham – The Hidden Rose
2. Pickwick – Can’t Talk Medicine
3. Rose Windows – The Sun Dogs
4. Mary Lambert – Welcome to the Age of My Body
5. Glitterbang – Occasionally, Love Is War
6. Hobosexual – Hobosexual II
7. La Luz – It’s Alive
8. Nissim – Nissim
9. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – The Heist
10. The Flavr Blue – Brite Vices
11. Hey Marseilles – Lines We Trace
12. Jaymes Young – Dark Star
13. Nacho Picasso – High & Mighty
14. Campfire Ok – When You Have Arrived
15. Ra Scion – The Sickle & The Sword
16. Walking Papers – Walking Papers
17. Monogamy Party – False Dancers
18. Moondoggies – Adios I’m a Ghost
19. Cock & Swan – Secret Angles
20. Grave Babies – Crusher
21. Cumulus – I Never Meant It To Be Like This
22. Ravenna Woods – The Jackals
23. Mudhoney – Vanishing Point
24. Aaron Sprinkle – Water & Guns
25. Pearl Jam – Lightening Bolt

And here are my most anticipated Seattle Records of 2014:

Katie Kate – LP 2
Cataldo – Gilded Oldies
Motopony – New!

Campfire OK – When You Have Arrived

Yesterday, my dear friends from Campfire OK released their latest album “When You Have Arrived.” I’ve been listening to some of these songs being performed for the last two years it feels like and to see it finally come together in an album is incredible. More importantly, this band means so much to me. I have had the greatest pleasure working with them in my time as a booker back in Seattle and cannot wait to see them rise from the success of this album.

Every track is so good (just like their first album!) but my favorites are definitely the following:

  • 2+3
  • My Dear Friends
  • Wooden Queen
  • When You Have Arrived
  • Our Hearts Beat Light

Campfire OK – do you. I’m sending you my love all the way from the Bay!

Campfire Ok – My Dear Friends

Readers, words cannot even begin to describe just how excited I am to share this new single with you by one of my favorite local bands Campfire Ok. In fact, I’ve talked about them so much on Yow Yow that you had better just know who they are by now. They are some of the most enjoyable company to be around and of course extremely talented. I am so lucky to have had the privilege of working with them. I’ve been listening to them perform this song for a year so I am more than thrilled that it is something official!

Please love them! (As much as I do)

Wedding Wednesday Bonus Song of the Day

Yow Yow’s friends over in Campfire OK are releasing one song a month and today’s pick is “Our Hearts Beat Light.” The song is sung by frontman Mychal Cohen and former Campfire OK member and the most darling person ever – Miss Melodie Knight.

The band has said itself that this track is for lovers, but I think it is the perfect song for a first dance. What do you guys think?
