Anthony Bourdain’s “The Layover” In Seattle

photo cred | Seattle Met

Did anyone catch last night’s season finale of Anthony Bourdain’s “The Layover” on the Travel Channel?! Seriously, there is more Seattle footage in this one hour than the entire season of Top Chef. It was a jam-packed episode (48 hours) of Anthony Bourdain sampling some of the best food that the Pacific Northwest has to offer and highlighting the aspects that make our city so wonderful like the culture, drinks, and of course the music scene that is so near and dear to my heart.

I was pretty much embarrassed that I hadn’t ever eaten at any of the restaurants he visited, but in my defense – I will not be able to afford Canlis until I am a real adult and have no more student debt I’m sure. Bourdain did an excellent job of touching on the different cultures and neighborhoods that Seattle has to offer though like Capitol Hill, Belltown, the University District and its best kept secrets instead of just hitting up The Pike Place Market like most people usually do. Also, it was pretty exciting to see a couple familiar faces in the episode – a family friend and someone that I had worked with on a non-profit project last year. They both dined at Rainier BBQ alongside Bourdain!

If you haven’t seen the episode, get on it. Seattle locals – you will be ever so proud.

Check out Seattle Met’s episode recap here.

Katie’s Favorites of 2012

Favorite Style Icon: Taylor Swift

T. Swift has seriously stepped her game in 2012. Yes, she’s still sticking to the neutral colored dresses – but hey! That’s okay. It works for her. Taylor Swift is really just doing all the right things when it comes to her style these days and it helps that there are a handful of fabulous designers throwing their pieces at her. It’s awesome. I, of course, am jealous.

Runner Up: Michelle Obama / Kate Middleton

American Hipster

Created by three Seattle natives, American Hipster is a web series that tells the story of how hipsters are living in this nation in the most hipster cities including (hi. home.) Seattle, Philly, San Francisco, New York and several  others. Each episode focuses on a different aspect of the hipster culture and the ones on Seattle could not speak more truly about this wonderful city.

I went to a private school that just happened to be in a very hipster neighborhood so over the last four years, I heard some backlash naturally. Let me just tell you that I’ve never loved a city more. I’ve never enjoyed living in a neighborhood more than I did in this one. The neighborhood didn’t help me figure out what my passions were. I did that back in high school bro. This neighborhood helped my passions explode – in everything that I did, all over the sidewalks, in every club and event that I participated in and most definitely on Yow Yow!

Watching former One Reel employee Kayte Olsufka invite viewers into her Bumbershoot experience was tough. After all, that was the career that I always wanted for myself. It is the best reflection of what Bumbershoot means to me though and what it means to the attendees that continue to show up to the music and arts festival year after year. My favorite segments are below:

Linda’s and Oddfellows are two of my favorite Capitol Hill spots.

Review: Anchovies & Olives

The boy and I celebrated a very special evening the other night at Ethan Stowell’s Anchovies & Olives in Capitol Hill. I was THIS close to getting him to write a little blurb for Yow Yow! but in the end, he didn’t budge. Even though this is only the second time we’ve been to one of Ethan Stowell’s restaurants together, it is still quite meaningful for us as our first date was at Staple & Fancy in Ballard too. We’ve decided to make it a challenge to hit up all five of his restaurants and next time I’m choosing the latest Rione XIII or How to Cook a Wolf.

This past weekend we ordered:

  • Spicy Coppa (to share)
  • Ravioli (for him)
  • Linguine (for me)

I typically like to do some research on the restaurant I’m eating at before I eat there so from what I had heard on the reviews, the linguine was a must-have. I’d been juggling back and forth all day long what dish I wanted, but I knew I wanted some form of pasta. What I really liked about the pasta was that it was comfort food. After an entire day of non-stop raining in Seattle, that was pretty much all I wanted. However, it was a little bit too buttery and creamy for my taste. As for the ravioli that I sampled from boy – what I liked about this dish was how clean and refreshing it was. The texture of it probably would have settled better with me I think in the end, but regardless, both of us were pretty pleased with our meals. I’ve heard that their Oyster Power Hour is something to try so if I ever decide to return to Anchovies & Olives, it will be for that!

Why did no one tell me about Molly Moon’s exclusive  Baracky Road ice cream?!

Is this punishment for no longer living in Capitol Hill because I feel like it is. Tomorrow’s the last day and I am nowhere near a Molly Moon’s. A bellini will have to do.

Secret Show For All: Macklemore Edition

In case you haven’t heard, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are playing a free show tonight at Neumos. First of all, this was very short notice announced just this morning and it’s FREE. We all know how much I love free things, but I won’t be attending this show because my fandom for the artist is very low in comparison to…the rest of the Seattle area. And it just wouldn’t be fair for me to take someone else’s spot.

Macklemore is playing a show next Friday at the WaMu theater (capacity: 7,000) as well that is already sold out so basically tonight is for everyone that couldn’t get a ticket. But you better believe those Seattle University students who probably already have tickets to that show will probably mosey on down to Neumos for this free set.

Is it fair? Is life fair?

Enjoy the shows kidlets!

Skillet Diner’s Daily Scramble

The daily scramble was basically my regular at Skillet Diner when I lived up in Capitol Hill last summer and this restaurant was my spot for weekend brunches or breakfast for dinners. Every day, the cooks at Skillet whip up a new scramble combination, which I guess adds to the element of surprise, but I still have my favorite – arugula and corn!
