Chris Walla Departs Death Cab For Cutie

It is with such a heavy heart that we report Chris Walla’s departure from Death Cab For Cutie. Technically, this news was released yesterday morning, but I couldn’t even bring myself to write about this until late today. Death Cab For Cutie was the first band that I consider myself having any attachment to growing up. Having followed them from their first album until their latest and having seen them perform three times it is hard for me to grasp what the band will look like without Chris. I remember on my journey to becoming a music booking extraordinaire, I made my end goal being able to book either Minus the Bear or Death Cab For Cutie.

While most people are huge fans of their front man Ben, I’ve always been a fan of Chris. Chris, at one point, even ventured off to create his first solo album which I remember having on repeat during my teenage years. The band has been together for 17 years until now and while I am sad about this news, I know that this is just normal – that it happens to many bands, but I just didn’t want it to happen to my band.

Chris will perform his last show with the band on September 19th in Victoria B.C. for the Rifflandia Festival. His full statement released to The Stranger can be found at the source below. We’ll miss you Chris. Thanks for everything.

Politics + Music w/ Chris Walla

[On whether it matters that Obama is aware of pop culture and knows who Jay-Z is]: “I think it does. When the level of awareness of pop culture that the opponent has is limited to “grits y’all,” the choice is pretty clear.” – Chris Walla

Rolling Stone interviewed Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla recently to see where he stands on the issues and how he feels about Presidential candidates working with musicians and bands. It’s pretty short, but still a significant read – at least in my opinion.

Check it here yo.

Nerd Crush: Chris Walla

pic cred: last.fm

When most people hear of the band “Death Cab For Cutie,” they automatically think of Ben Gibbard, but ladies and gentlemen – I’m here to remind you that there is another dreamboat within the group and his name is Chris Walla. Oh yeah. Chris. Walla. He’s the guitarist in the band, but occasionally can be heard on vocals. Did you also know that he put out a solo album under his name called “Field Manual” in 2008? If you enjoy listening to Death Cab For Cutie, then you will absolutely enjoy his side project. His latest project though has been creating his own record label – Trans Records. The first band on the label was The Lonely Forest, but I recently read that the label will now be working with Minneapolis indie pop group Now, Now.

Song of the Day

Chris Walla – Sing Again

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1314HRM1hO4&feature=player_embedded]

Because I just spent my entire Friday night listening to Seattle music. This is actually my first time ever seeing this video and it’s so great! It was filmed in Seattle, the concept is fantastic, and I can’t remember if my old coworker was featured in this video or if it was his wife, but regardless, not knowing still doesn’t change the way I feel about this song or this video.

Chris Walla starts up record label

Chris Walla is a God. He is the guitarist in Death Cab For Cutie and in 2008, he released his first solo album Field Manual. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you should. It’s a great album and definitely one of my favorites.

In the past Chris has worked on albums done by The Postal Service, Tegan and Sara, Hot Hot Heat, The Thermals, and The Decemberists.

His new label entitled Trans is kicking off to a great start. Which Seattle band was first to sign w/ Chris? Why, The Lonely Forest of course. These guys are also great live and will be head into the studio this spring to record their LP.

In The News…

LeAnn Rimes and her husband Dean Sheremet separate. There has been recent talk lately that she has been having an affair with previous co-star Eddie Cibrian. Earlier this week, Eddie’s wife Brandi Glanville has said they will be splitting also and that LeAnn and Eddie “deserve each other.”

Miley Cyrus wants to play Batgirl in The Dark Knight sequel.

Jon Gosselin is now being represented by Rubenstein Communications, a very well-known public relations firm in New York that represents David Letterman and Donald Trump. Guess he got tired of such bad publicity.

ps JustJared just came out with THESE shirts

Chris Walla: [from Death Cab For Cutie on Paramore’s new single Ignorance] I think it would be fair to characterize the new Paramore single as totally fucking brilliant.
