Katie’s Favorites of 2012

Favorite Style Icon: Taylor Swift

T. Swift has seriously stepped her game in 2012. Yes, she’s still sticking to the neutral colored dresses – but hey! That’s okay. It works for her. Taylor Swift is really just doing all the right things when it comes to her style these days and it helps that there are a handful of fabulous designers throwing their pieces at her. It’s awesome. I, of course, am jealous.

Runner Up: Michelle Obama / Kate Middleton

Out on the Town: 11/17

It’s been over a year since I’ve seen one of my favorite Seattle bands, but hopefully – someone out there – is seeing them in Seattle tonight!

Minus the Bear is playing tonight at Showbox at the Market along with Cursive and Girl in a Coma. I’ll never forget the time they played at this same venue years back while I was still in high school and the show had sold out while I was in line and still without a ticket. The problems I had back then…

Doors open at 8:00pm and tickets are on sale for $25, I believe.

City Arts Fest Update

A couple of days ago, I attended this year’s City Arts Fest VIP Kick Off Party and had a wonderful time. The event was held at Benaroya Hall and I gotta say – it looked a whole lot different from when I was there last… [flashback: Fall Ball 2008] As a person in my 20’s, I love open bars. It combines two things that a person in their 20’s love – free things and…!!

The whole event was pretty exciting with our always favorite USnaps photo booth being featured, pink hair extensions by Senos Salon, Vitamin Water, and food and free flowing drinks! Unfortunately, Kevin and I didn’t stay for the whole event and missed the surprise performance by an unnamed band. I still don’t know who it is. Thank you so much to Ever Kipp of PR firm – Tiny Human for inviting us though. It was so much fun to be a part of!

Just an update on how City Arts Fest is going…all music, arts, and VIP wristbands are sold out! You can, however, still purchase single tickets to shows and arts events and Culture Club passes. Only two more days left y’all! Don’t miss out on this great festival.

City Arts Fest Eve

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/50639201]

I am so excited to finally have the chance to attend this year’s City Arts Fest. What I have come to discover in years of attending music festivals is that I’m usually burnt out by the end of the first day in a weekend music fest. It is practically a marathon trying to have sets lined up after set after set after set. Not to mention, you’ve gotta factor in food breaks, water breaks, random breaks, etc. This time, that’s not a problem. Beginning Wednesday and going through Saturday, there will be multiple shows to attend every night and I can pace myself by attending one a night if I so please. Tomorrow is the kick-off party down at Benaroya Hall and I cannot wait. Of course, I’ll be live tweeting throughout the whole event so all of you can see what I’ll be up to. I hear there will be food, drinks, surprise performances, and even an opportunity to get your hair cut. I bet you’ve never seen that at an opening party. It’s cool – I haven’t either.

As for my City Arts Fest schedule? Here is my dream lineup. No word yet on whether or not I will make it to each of them, but I will most certainly try.

It Was A Good Day

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/52582150″ iframe=”true” /]

It’s still pretty early in the month y’all, but let me just say…October is turning out to be pretty amazing! While it can be difficult at times to juggle both my day job as a recruiter and my evening job as a blogger, I am very fortunate that what I do in my profession allows me to have the best of the both worlds. I really do feel like like I’m living a double life, but I’m living a life that I absolutely love and enjoy. I wanted to share some exciting news with you all!

Yow Yow! is headed into it’s fourth year this coming January and to this day I am still amazed at all of the readers and the support. You’ve allowed me to do something that I love and to express something that is very much a part of me (just not all of me!) I’m excited to announce that I will be covering City Arts Fest in a couple weeks for the first time ever! I haven’t exactly decided which shows I will be attending just yet, but I am grateful to have been provided an all access wristband by the organizers. Additionally, I will be attending the opening party for University Village’s new Room & Board store for modern furniture…the same week. Busy girl over here. I’ll be posting coverage on the blog and live tweeting of course!

Bumbershoot 2012: M83 Mess

Two years ago, I wrote a post about concert etiquette and I thought I had covered my bases, but after the M83 mess yesterday, I realized that the times were a changing and my etiquette list forgot to include pre-teens/teenagers rolling.

Steph and I were looking forward to catching M83’s set yesterday at Bumbershoot, but were also aware that many people were there just so that they could hear “Midnight City” and leave. Well, we wished that song would have been played earlier because as the set went on, the crowd became increasingly more rowdy. Steph was hoping to make it onto the floor, but I was comfortable in my seat. I was on assignment for the event so I needed to be able to type from my phone and that wouldn’t be possible from the floor. At some point during the set, the security guards had decided that they were no longer letting people onto the floor. The floor was maybe halfway full, but I’m 22 years old so what do I care? I’m not going to question security guards – I have my seat. To my left I saw a man in his 30’s…40’s? rushing down the stairs and rallying up people on either side of the aisle (my side included) trying to get people to rush the floor with him. I was in a section with quite a few adults, but sure enough those kidlets had turned up and had followed suit. Immediately, the stair aisle next to me had filled with kids bunched up, uncomfortable, and ready to charge at the security guards down below. Every few seconds, a few kids would get pass the guards and either a) make it onto the floor escaping the guards or b) endure a tackling situation. The crowds next to me would cheer if someone made it through pass the guards or give the appropriate “OHHHH” if someone was caught.

When the teenagers realized that they were too far up the stairs to make it to the floor in time, they began hopping over the seats and attempting to jump over me and the people around me. Luckily, I happened to be standing right behind someone who wasn’t going to let that happen and kept pushing the kid back and challenging him in a “Come at me bro” type of situation. As a spectator and someone who was caught in the middle of this situation, I’ve got a few thoughts on this.

  • To the kids that nearly took me out trying to get to the floor and causing others around me (myself included) to panic because we were all in a situation that we didn’t want to be in and just wanted to enjoy a show – it’s time to learn some manners. Your parents did not raise you to become reckless beings at a public event. This behavior is dangerous not only to you, but the people around you. Also, there were 15 minutes left in the set; don’t make dumb decisions.
  • To the man in front of me that confronted these kids, thank you because I’m not assertive enough to do this myself.
  • And most importantly, to the security guards. There really were not enough of you and because of the placement of the main stage in the Key Arena, your job was so much harder, but thank you. You perform a job that most people do not want to do and you are unappreciated by attendees of this event. After I left this set, I wanted to thank all of you for putting yourself in a situation like this. Thank you for keeping us safe or at least trying to do your best.
