A Note For This Week

Like many of you, I am still grappling with my feelings and my words on how to describe or even make sense of what happened this past week in Atlanta. I can’t. And it’s going to take me more than a few days to process. What I won’t do is mince words. If the media and the police dept. won’t say it, I will. This was absolutely a hate crime. There is no other way to see it. If you are someone that is publicly saying that 6/8 people killed having been Asian women at three targeted massage parlors is not a hate crime, you are making a racist statement. Ask yourself why you are defending a 21-year old gunman who has done this and what purpose this serves you. How do people begin to defend the gunman? Because he likes pizza, music, and God? And why is calling it a “hate crime” something you cannot acknowledge? Acknowledge human lives.

I’m sure when I’m ready, I will put together something more structurally sound – maybe more grammatically correct. For now, as I continue to gather myself, I want to share out a few pieces that have been written or created by other AAPI people on the aftermath of not only this week, but what we have been facing for the last year.

Tie A Bow On It

For as long as I’ve been dressing myself, I have always had an issue with my straps falling off my shoulders – for dresses, for tank tops, it’s a struggle. It was so bad recently that I even considered just using a safety pin to connect my two straps together, but then quickly decided against that because safety pins were such a throwback to my emo high school stage. Then, in my time of need, I stumbled across a video of Connie Wang of Refinery29 solving this exact problem!

This video here will be your everything.

Immediately, I rushed to my closet to try and find some thin scarves that I could use to not only emulate this look, but also solve a huge issue. However, even though this was a simple black dress, this didn’t seem to work the way I wanted it to. Then I remembered this pretty black and white polka dotted ribbon that I had purchased a long time ago that I used to decorate my studio in college and brought with me to California. I tied the bow myself without looking and it was just okay, but then my co-worker Sepideh tied it for this photograph and it looked amazing! Instantly, my straps were turned into a racerback style and it’s not only functional, but still v. cute.

I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am to never have this issue again. Good thing, it only took me 20 years or something.

Girl Crush: Connie Wang

Every so often, your Yow Yow! blogger acquires a little bit of a girl crush on the people working in this industry. Sometimes they come and go. Other times, they last more than a few years and with regards to Connie Wang, this crush has been a lengthy one. If you’ve been reading Yow Yow! for quite some time, then you have seen me mention Connie on this blog before. When I first came across her, she was writing for Chictopia before leaving her gig there and becoming Senior Global Editor at my favorite fashion blog Refinery29 where she has been at for four years.

Like the other women we have featured on Yow Yow! this year for our series: Women Who Are Making It, Connie is an independent, creative spirit who exudes beauty, confidence, and a whole lot of sass. As a college freshman watching this video by Connie, I remember having that “AHA!” moment in my dorm room and feeling inspired by her words of wisdom and advice.

Flash forward four years later, her own company – Refinery29 – is featuring her in a video yet again to have her explain her passion and how she views fashion today. You can watch it here!

School: 10 Favorite Posts

Earlier this afternoon, I received my school’s quarterly magazine and instantly missed everything about being back in school. This past week, I have been feeling all sorts of nostalgia. I wanted to be a freshman again. I wanted to see my friends. This time last year before class started, I was doing happy hours every day (not just for the drinks y’all! Happy hour food is my guilty pleasure.) It also didn’t help that some of my favorite professors that I’ve ever had were featured in this magazine’s issue too. So all of these mixed emotions led me to looking back on my college days and selecting my 10 favorite “school-themed” posts to highlight.

It’s time for a blast from the past! And when I say past, I mean three months ago.

  1. What I’ll Miss About “Greek” (Because I lived vicariously through these characters who had a Greek system)
  2. From One Post Grad to Many Undergrads
  3. Work With Me, Mentee
  4. {Guest Post} By Ashley de Leon
  5. Pickwick Surprises
  6. Prom Season Is Coming Up
  7. Dorm Life
  8. Meet: Brendan Leonard
  9. Smart
  10. Connie is a Graduate [from my idol Connie Wang]

Fash Cab w/ Connie and Tavi!

This will be the 19th and the last post of the night because I’m already predicting that I won’t make it to 20 before midnight. Today, I came across a Fash Cab video with two of my idols – Miss Connie Wang of Refinery 29 and 15-year old blogger Tavi Gevinson on Refinery 29 and it was basically the best thing I’ve seen all day. Connie’s career and background in fashion has always been impressive to me and Tavi is pretty much the coolest girl ever. In the video Tavi answers questions about her life away from fashion and how she spends her evenings. She may rub elbows with Anna Wintour a few times a year, but this girl is still a teenager and lives exactly like one. She’s also got the best hidden talent ever that I wish I had – (it involves Nicki Minaj!)

To watch the video, click here. Trust me- it’s worth it.

Outfit Inspired

Today, my outfit was inspired by Refinery 29 Global Editor Connie Wang. I’ve been a huge fan of her ever since she was writing for Chictopia so it was nice to see her move on to a blog that I also respect and admire. At some point, I hope to interview Connie and the rest of the women I am inspired by in the blog world for Yow Yow! including Rumi Neely and Magic Molly. Hopefully we can start those next spring.

Never forget…

20 Favorite Posts!

It is a tedious and challenging task having to go through all of your posts in one year to weed out your favorites. Something… I don’t really want to ever do it again. BUT it’s important that I share with you my favorite 20. Over the course of this year, some posts have made it to the top [or the front page of WordPress] that I really don’t think are all that deserving of that title. I like all my posts of course, but there are some that I believe, have a larger message. There are some that I put a lot of time into working on that receive no attention at all. Yet, the whole world cares more about Dora the Explorer, Megan Fox, and the new Tinkerbell. So I’m allowing you all to see my favorite posts again resurfaced! These are for the most part in no order – I don’t have time to truly give them a number ranking.

20. New Directions

Why: If you don’t know where to look, you will never find it. Believe it or not, men care about their appearances just as much as women. Maybe they won’t admit, but that’s okay. I’m not asking you to. I wanted to highlight some well made websites and blogs  for men that focus on dress and lifestyle. It’s okay to want to look good. 🙂

19. Life as a Seattlelite

Why: One of my best friends Jeanette reminded me this past summer that it is always important to explore where you are from. I’ve lived in and around Seattle my entire life and I can safely say that no experience is the same. People from Seattle don’t know this, but there is so much more  than downtown and the Space Needle and Seattle Center. There are various neighborhoods – each a part of the city, but with its own individual personality. That day, we explored three prominent locations in the Seattle area: Pike Place Market, Gasworks, and the Fremont Troll.

Connie is a graduate.

It’s that time. Graduation. Everyone closes the book on one chapter and skips on to the next. It’s interesting to see… where everyone will end up in the years down the line.

Congratulations my lovely babies at Inglemoor, the seniors at Seattle University.. I don’t really know that many of you, and graduate students. I don’t know you at all. But still! The “Real World” is out there (I hate using that cliche) and life is really what you make of it.

Greg and I were talking tonight about how he has had a great freshman year because he didn’t really have a plan and just did things as they came to him or what he wanted. I said I did do the things I wanted, but I had my goals and my plan was structured. Different paths, but looking back on this year, we are content.

So one of my favorite bloggers, Connie from Chictopia just graduated and she posted up this video talking about life after graduation and fashion and the likes, so I’m gonna post this here.
