Is it just me or did MTV’s “Unplugged” used to be more than 30 minutes? Things have been quiet lately in the BTS universe until we heard that they’d be featured in this upcoming episode. While we’ve been getting many performances of “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On,” fans wondered what the rest of the “BE” singles would be like. Not only did we get in the special with “Blue and Grey” and “Telepathy,” the guys also surprised us with a cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You.”

Nearly hitting our one-year anniversary with the pandemic, BTS gave us a song that would heal, but also a song that has brought them comfort over the years. I’m biased and obviously I would share every performance in a post here if I could, but I wanted to pick out my favorite. Someone asked me today if I thought their cover was better than the original. Honestly, I don’t think anything can ever top the original, but I enjoyed their arrangement of this song too. Did you know that Coldplay doesn’t let just anybody use their song whether it’s a cover or in film and television? Turns out they are quite selective and have turned down artists and money when they feel like their song being use might be disrespected. After this performance was released, Coldplay showed the group nothing, but support by leaving comments and re-sharing.

I was watching a BTS interview the other day when the guys mentioned Song So Hee would be covering one of their hit singles, “Spring Day.” I haven’t been interested in listening to other BTS covers, but have been lately when they show up in my feed. With little context about So Hee’s musical background and history, I started to play it. It didn’t sound anything like “Spring Day,” but I couldn’t figure out what this reminded me of. It was slightly stripped down without the pop-iness of the original. In So Hee’s arrangement, the song was entirely different, but still captured the beauty in the lyrics against what reminded me of traditional Vietnamese style music I grew up listening to in the house. After a quick Google search, I discovered that that’s essentially what Song So Hee is known for – traditional Korean music called gugak.

It’s hard to imagine our favorites as anything else than what we know. These moments of discovery are always so refreshing to me though.

Now that their album is officially out, we won’t be seeing “Dynamite” for too much longer. However, I’m still holding onto for just a little while. I love this cover that AILEE and the extra effort she took in changing outfits and backdrops! It’s such a fun take on the song that really got us all moving again in the summer.

I don’t know if we’ll ever get tired of hearing “Dynamite.” I remember when BTS released not one, but two remix albums for the single, I initially thought this was excessive. After all, do any other American artists have two separate remix albums (one daytime and one nighttime) for one single? Even despite my own curiosity behind it, I still loved every single remix – 9 total. I’ll be the first to say that even with nine remixes, they all sound nothing like each other! When I think about 2020, I will remember that “Dynamite” really could not have come at a better time ie) when the world was falling apart.

This cover by Griff and Honne is now just another version of the song that I’ll grow to love. The video captures the making of the process, but the cover itself start at 2:46. Enjoy!

I’m starting to wind down for the night, but I wanted to make sure I ended the night on a high note (literally!) “Love on Top” is one of my favorite feel-good songs. I can’t wait till I’m able to sing and dance to this one again at an upcoming wedding. Good night!

It’s Hayley Williams appreciation week for us! I had heard that she had done a cover of “Don’t Start Now” – one of my favorite Dua Lipa songs, but only heard it for the first time tonight. I love the way she decided to arrange this song. If I had heard her rendition for the first time without ever having heard the original, I think I would be just as obsessed with it.

All that aside, it’s no secret that I’m excited for Hayley’s comeback. This cover on top of everything she has built her career upon proves how incredible she is. Her sound isn’t necessarily new for her. Instead, it has evolved. She has always been the front woman and had the support of her band, but now she gets to do it all on her own. We can’t get enough of this cover.

Performance of the Day

It’s the eve of the Super Bowl and how can something like this not make you smile? We posted about how Harry covered Lizzo’s “Juice” just last [month] and now the two have met up to perform it together this past week! Though it hasn’t been officially recorded yet, there’s a chance it still could be. After all, Lizzo brought on Ariana Grande for a remix of “Good As Hell” just last year.

I was searching for a wedding video for Wedding Mondays tonight and didn’t come across any! I did, however, find that a couple used this cover for their “first dance” song. It was the first time I’ve ever heard this version from Childish Gambino and I had to share it with all of you.
