Starbucks Shop Made of Recycled Shipping Containers

photo cred | inhabitat

In Seattle, you will never run into the problem of not being able to find a Starbucks. It’s everywhere just like it is in every other city! Even when you’re not in Seattle, you can’t escape the coffee shop because they have branded themselves so well that even before you become a coffee drinker you already know everything about the company or at least the most important facts anyways. What I love about Starbucks is that they never stop surprising their customers and are continually taking their appearances to the next level. The newer logo is a little bit on the minimalistic side, sure, but in the Capitol Hill neighborhood the aesthetic of the shops differ from each other pretty drastically.

The Starbucks shop across the street from Seattle University recently went through a makeover in the last year or two and has adopted a more industrialized feel. For some time, one Starbucks shop was a shop in disguise with the same menu items under a different name instead of Starbucks. Another Starbucks location on the hill serves wine! It’s a little different, but that is what sets them apart from everyone else.

Now, if you find yourself in Tukwila, Washington, you must stop by the newest Starbucks location constructed entirely out of four recycled shipping containers. Not only is it resourceful and up to LEED green building standards, but check out those angles! I am digging the sharpness of it.

You can’t.

A Picnic Indoors

Designed by Haiko Cornelissen Architecten, this picNYC table was meant to bring a little bit of your active outdoorsy life indoors. If you love hosting picnics and are unable to because of factors such as weather, loud noise, unsanitary grass, then this table might just be what you are looking for.

The vegetated surface is designed to offer the surreal experience of picnicking indoors, providing an earthy bed on which to nestle a bottle of wine and place fine dishware. As the designers explained: “Suddenly, spilling water becomes a necessity instead of a problem and wine glasses need coasters not to prevent ring stains but to avoid tumbling.”

I love this idea, but only if the bugs aren’t included in the equation.

GOOD’s The Rules Of:

GOOD is a website that I look forward to reading every morning and one of my favorite regular posts is “The Rules Of:” Yesterday’s just happened to be “The Rules Of: Having a Hangover” and since we are (well everyone except me) attending holiday parties this season, a hangover might be a  possibility in the near future.

Caffe Vita Public Brewing School

Caffe Vita will be hosting two sessions this winter for locals who want to learn how to become coffee brewing masters! They’ll be highlighting methods that are both new and traditional as well as enlightening you on various techniques to achieve the best flavors and aromas out of your beans.

“The next PBS sessions are November 19 and December 17. The Saturday morning classes begin at 10am, lasting about two hours, and are held at Caffe Vita Capitol Hill at 1005 E. Pike Street. The classes are free and space is limited. To reserve your spot, please email Andy@caffevita.com.”

The classes are free so don’t pass up this awesome opportunity! I once had a chance to tour the company down the street from our school for one of my classes and it was such a fun experience. The staff there are so kind and the environment welcoming. I’m not a heavy coffee drinker myself, but everyone else I know pretty much is so sign up now!

In Seattle News…

There was so much Seattle news swirling around yesterday that I decided to just make a separate post for it away from the rest of the pop culture news going on in the world.

- During Bumbershoot weekend, Kevin informed me of a new car service named Uber that had just been brought to Seattle that I could use in place of taking a taxi or the bus. So how does it work exactly? Uber is an on-demand car service that will pick you up from wherever you are and take you anywhere you need to go in a sleek black car. Known as “everyone’s private driver,” Uber is a service that is all about convenience and style. If you’re a member of the service, then your payment is just charged to your credit card so no more fumbling at your dolla dolla bills! This service is great for a night out, but is also the safer bet in place of a taxi or bus – - as suggested by Kevin.

“In Seattle, pricing currently starts with a $7 base, plus $3.75/mile distance and $0.75/mile time fees with a $12 minimum and $50 set rate for Sea-Tac.

To learn more about the service, click here to visit their website.

- PBS is making a documentary that will highlight Seattle’s thriving music scene. The program titled “Seattle Music…something in the water” isn’t all that clever, but will feature some of your favorite local bands including The Head & the Heart, Shabazz Palaces, Pickwick, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and a few others. The show will air on October 21st.  [Source]

- Storefront installations will be returning to Broadway this fall/winter! The last time this happened was back when I was a freshman and back then I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate it. Storefronts Seattle will take over vacant store fronts on Capitol Hill stretching from Pine Street to Roy and will be decorating them with creative and visually pleasing installations. [Source]

- Food trucks are rolling up with a sweet surprise! Street Wheels, a new hot pink truck parked on 2nd and Pine, will be dishing out their treats every day from noon-6. Their menu features a number of ice cream sandwiches, chocolate dipped ice cream bars, and a handful of your favorite classic desserts. [Source]

- Molly Moon’s has been named the King County Executive Small Business of the Year! [Source]

- After one man stiffed a bartender last week at one of my favorite bars in Capitol Hill and then criticized her weight on the receipt, the locals went nuts. Something you should learn of the day: If you’re  going to stiff a bartender, don’t pay with a credit card. Capitol Hill locals harassed the guy via his Facebook to let him know that he is just not welcome back to our neighborhood ever again. This story got around so quick, I even found out on The Frisky shortly after the incident. Read more about what happened here and here.

Purchase: Water Bottle

My “green-conscious” friends are going to hate for me this post, but I finally purchased my very own water bottle! For the past few weeks, I’ve been getting the h2o at Starbucks out of a plastic cup to bring to school mostly because of convenience, but this morning I decided that enough was enough. The people at Starbucks must think I am crazy and I am just being lazy by not bringing my own water so I purchased a Camelbak Groove .6L in seafoam green! I’d say that I’m really excited to try it out, but I’m not sure how much more exciting this could  be.

Did You Know?

Did you know that Seattle hipster restaurants don’t like to serve water to their diners in standard pitchers anymore? Nope. Everything is self-serve ie) they put a fancy swingtop bottle on your table filled with water that may or may not be room temperature without the ice and they expect you to just like it. I bet they’d even look at you funny if you tried to ask for ice. Why do you have to be so high maintenance? After all, Seattle restaurants are being trendy and they are considered way ahead of other restaurants also known as rookies because they are still using pitchers. So if you’re going to eat at Cafe Presse, Oddfellows or Skillet Diner – get ready to look SUPER fancy with your swingtop bottle with no ice.

Skillet Diner takes it a bit further though and instead of cups they use mason jars. Oh yeah. Capitol Hill is hip and we all want you to know it.

Starbucks Fashion

CFDA designers Alexander Wang, Billy Reid and Sophie Theallet have recently collaborated with Starbucks to create a line of “fashion-forward” tees for their 40th birthday celebration. I never would have penned the company to dip their feet in the fashion world, but I actually find the collaboration to be kind of cool. One tee in the collection is designed to look as if you have spilled a cup of coffee on yourself and will be sold for $85 both in stores and online. For free, you could spill your own coffee on yourself and get the same look. Would you pay $85 for this t-shirt?

A Collection Part 26

As I was laying in my deathbed the other day recovering from Bumbershoot, five feet away from me Veronica shouted “KATIE! COLLECTION POST! When are you going to change your header?” I’m not sure if many of you realized this by now, but Veronica is one of the few people I listen to when it comes to Yow Yow. Oh and I also listened to Evan when he told me the other day that my Foster the People rant was “SO HIPSTER,” which made me so self-conscious that I decided to delete it altogether.

The road to recovering from Bumbershoot has been steady, but has obviously set me back a little bit. On top of that, I’ve also gotten some new hardware! YEAH! So I’m busy making transfers and starting fresh all over again. It’s safe to say that at this point, Yow Yow! will no longer be doing 17 posts a day as summer comes to an end. That’s right – it’s finally hitting me, but what an incredible last summer this has been for me. I am grateful to have had this opportunity to spend time with my family and friends and to actually have time to focus on myself more than ever. That’s not meant to sound selfish at all. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am usually MIA throughout the school year (unless they work with me/have classes w/ me) because I am constantly on the go. For once, I got to experience what it was like to have absolutely nothing on my plate. I even got bored a few times – most likely during the time I spent writing those 17 posts.

Anyways, since I won’t be doing much posting over the next couple of days, I thought I would do a Collection post for all of you to enjoy!
