Mochi Ramen Noodles Are Coming to SF

The pandemic has left many SF and Bay Area restaurants struggling to make ends meet at this time. It may also be considered one of the riskiest times to kick off a new establishment, but some are still doing it and taking their chances with takeout or outdoor dining when it returns. Junya Watanabe isn’t a new chef by any means, but you may have known about him from his past life (at least we do!) Before taking on the restaurant industry and being the owner of the San Diego chain, RakiRaki Ramen and Tsukemen, Watanabe was famous for his designs in fashion.

His new shop “RakiRaki Ramen by Junya Watanabe” should have opened this past November 25th and will be the first Bay Area spot to serve mochi ramen noodles. What makes mochi ramen noodles so special? They’re extra chewy because of the mochi powder added to the dough!

Even though I’ve been leaning on some of my favorite locals during the quarantine, I’m also trying my fair share of new restaurants and places I never got around to. Whether it’s takeout or when regular dining opens up, we can’t wait to try it.

Before this year, I didn’t know that May was Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage month. While it has been a slow journey for me to become more acquainted with my culture and history, I know now I can appreciate this much more at my age. I think some of this has to do with the environment I grew up in and not having that kind of community until after graduating college and starting my career. Without even knowing how special this month was, we got into Korean drama all on our own and started to read and watch pieces that were all tied to the celebration of this month. By no means do I think that means I’ve done all the work that there is, but I’m excited to continue educating myself. I’ve really been enjoying this and have shared a majority of them here with you all!

A Michelin-Starred Taiwanese Restaurant in a Strip Mall

Maybe it’s because I recently had some fun in my kitchen that I’m enjoying more of these videos lately. Or it may be that it’s because another new season of Top Chef has just aired. Whatever the case, watching some of these videos from the restaurant industry is something I always enjoy. I never had a chance to work in the food industry, but it was something that I had hoped to get exposure to when I was much younger. Instead of taking that route as a first job, I leaned into the retail side of things. To this day though, food is such an important aspect of my life. And while I don’t cook as often as I’d like, it’s still something I enjoy. I loved watching this video from start to finish and seeing into all of these gritty details.
