Remembering Naya Rivera

If you scroll back through the archives of Yow Yow! then you would know that we loved watching Glee. I still remember being one of the few people in my friend group that was watching the pilot when it first aired and how I felt a little dorky watching it, but loved it all the same. It was the kind of show that you would watch because you couldn’t wait to see what songs they’d cover next. It wasn’t a perfect series, though. In recent weeks, we’ve seen coverage of problematic storylines coming up as well as how actors and actresses behaved towards each other. All of that doesn’t matter this week though. The series has lost their third regular from the show in a tragic accidental drowning. Naya Rivera was iconic in her role as Santana Lopez – a woman of color and a lesbian. Characters like her on television were few and far between, but she was far more than these labels. She was extremely talented as a singer, performer and of course, a mother. Here are a few of my favorite Santana performances from the series.

Kevin McHale: Be My Boyfriend

photo cred | Refinery29

Ever since I started watching Glee, I have always had a mini crush on Kevin McHale’s nerdy character Artie. It’s hasn’t been an easy year for the entire cast and especially with the news coming out that the season will end after next year, but I have a lot of faith in the actors and actresses that have been in the show from the start and I’m hoping that a bright future will be ahead for all of them.

On another note, (the reason why I’m even writing this post at all) Kevin McHale recently did an interview with Refinery 29 and answered a question about his favorite date spots in LA.

“This may not be romantic to anyone else, but I love In-N-Out and I love planes. And, if you go to the In-N-Out by LAX not during rush hour, and you sit on the grass, and watch the planes take off and eat burgers, I think that’s pretty great. I like the Observatory a lot, too. I think the view from there is incredible. I think it’s one of those places in L.A. that a lot of people forget about. I guess I just geek out there. I’m a little bit of a space nerd.”

OH MY GOSH, is this paragraph not describing all the things I love? In-N-Out, airports/flying, SPACE.

So which one of my industry friends can hook this up because Kevin and I could be a perfect match.

Glee To End Next Season

Next season will be the show’s last says the series’ cocreator Ryan Murphy. After 6 seasons, the show will finally end and while I’ve been a fan since the very beginning, I think that now is probably a good time to wrap it up. The television series has had an incredible run, one that included a spinoff (The Glee Project) that lasted for two seasons, but with Cory Monteith’s death, I’m sure it has affected the cast and crew like they never imagined.

“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” he told reporters. “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was – he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.

There have been some fantastic moments in this show – some breakthroughs. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m accepting its end. I think Ryan Murphy is doing the right thing.

Lea Michele Dedicates Award to Cory Monteith

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc6OOddDtKE]

When Lea Michele accepted her award last night for Teen Choice TV Actress: Comedy, we were a little surprised and not sure what to expect. She has briefly stepped out into the public since Cory’s passing and has not said too many words, but  we kept hearing from her cast mates that Lea was a “true professional” and that she was very very strong. That was obviously true last night as she dedicated her award to Cory and spoke about him in a moving and tearful speech. Yes, I was even brought to tears myself watching the show last night.

Cory Monteith Found Dead At 31

I am saddened to come home to news that Cory Monteith has passed away today at the age of 31. The breakout star of Glee became an overnight-singing sensation through the hit show, but openly admitted to the media recently that he was seeking treatment for his drug addiction in rehab.  Things were looking up for the young actor and his girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele expressed her support by staying by the actor’s side through this. Unfortunately, Cory was found in his room today at the Fairmont Pacific Hotel.

I can only imagine how difficult this is for the entire Glee cast and crew. Our prayers are with those close to Cory.

This or That

This year, I recently stopped watching Glee – because let’s just be honest with ourselves here,  we have no idea what is going on with the show. If Lea Michele is not a full-time character and stuck in high school, then what are we watching the show for?  I’m not sure if the series is trying to mold itself like Degrassi right now by looping in new characters that are younger and transitioning them through high school, but it isn’t working. At least – it’s not working smoothly. I will, however, write this one last post about Glee. A couple summers ago, there was a show called “The Glee Project” in which normal kids that could sing and act, but mostly sing would compete for a chance on the show. One winner looked exactly like an Avatar character and therefore inspired one of my favorite Yow Yow! posts.

Sam – the Avatar look-a-like recently cut off his dreads and no longer looks like this. Now he looks like someone completely different, but someone told me that aliens could transform themselves…

Over the Pond Swoon of the Day

Real talk here – everyone fell in love with The Wanted when we heard the Warblers cover their song, “Glad You Came,” on Glee. How that show manages to have so much power amazes me. The song is now everywhere. EVERYWHERE. But I ain’t hating – the song is catchy and the guys in the group are OH SO CHARMING. Think I’m wrong? Watch them perform the song on Ellen and prepare to blush so hard blush so hard.

Also did anyone notice that every band member sings? Our boy bands from the 90’s have got nothing on them. I know I’m calling you out J-tim, but sorry I’m not sorry.
