Tour Google’s Latest Pop Up in NYC

Google is and always will be just a fascinating company to me. Some of the things they work on and the different teams that they house sometimes overwhelm me because not only is it just a lot in volume and size, but Google has their hands on everything – apps, phones, home, maps, etc. Pretty soon, sometimes I worry that we won’t really need anything else because Google will just replace everything and make it better. I didn’t know that they opened a pop up recently in Soho until I read about it on Doobybrain, but definitely thought it was interesting enough to share. If you get a chance to view it in real life, you should!

Google Inbox

I’m always looking for new ways to better manage and prioritize all of my various inboxes – for my personal, blog, and work email accounts. Even when I feel like I’ve got it down, I know that there’s always something that I can be doing better. Learning how to tackle email in college was never as hard as it is now. It’s something that I wish my professors would have taught me back then! When Inbox was released earlier this week, I hadn’t learned that much about it, but quickly saw it fill up in my Quora feed and was immediately intrigued by it. I saw an opportunity to snag an invite from a former intern that worked with us and jumped at the chance. I downloaded it, but am still trying to find my way around it and am wondering if I will use it more often from my mobile now than on the web. Also, I thought I would be receiving a few invites to give out as well, but my app is missing the golden ticket!

Does anyone have any tips on how I’ll be able to have my own invites, too? I think it’s also a matter of time before Google makes the app available to everyone too so maybe having the ticket won’t be necessary.

Google Removes Name Restrictions on Google+

In questionable moves today, Google announced that they have removed all name restrictions from Google+ and have issued an apology to all of their users who faced difficulties because they did not want to provide their name on the social network originally. I find this to be a little bit odd because all other social networks require you to use your name and that makes the most sense to me. It’s a way of making sure people are authentic and maybe an extra cushion to make sure people are who they really say they are. Maybe I’m wrong though because there’s always catfishing. I would think that by Google+ removing this they will definitely receive more troll-y accounts. Their reasoning for this is to make Google+ a more “welcoming and inclusive” place.

Very interesting. It’s informative news, but it’s not making me run to the social network to make an account.

Just in time for graduation…

This is giving me such a nostalgic feeling. I totally remember going through so many of these phases before college – the braces, driver’s license, my first job at 16, prom, and applying to college. This is really really sweet. I want to meet the people who make these videos.

It was just several weeks ago that a few of my co-workers and I were huddled around a laptop at dinner to watch some of Google’s most heartwarming advertisements. Google has a reputation for creating commercials that tug at your heart strings and this is just one example of that. I don’t know how I missed this when this aired during the Super Bowl three years ago, but awww!

Google Enhances Restaurant Search

When traveling, finding a restaurant while you’re out should be seamless. When the girls and I were in San Francisco last week, we used Yelp, stumbled upon random places, or took suggestions from our friends. It’s all pretty inconsistent, but isn’t traveling always that way? Google developed a new kind of restaurant search this week that I can definitely support and get behind. All you have to do is type in what you’re looking for and Google will immediately find your location and present you with a restaurant carousel that appears at the top of your search page. From the images you are shown, you can click on them for more details including address, photos, and reviews.

This feature was first introduced to the iPad and other tablets in December of last year, with a horizontal grid displaying venues near your location like restaurants, bars, and spas.

Google Makes A Shift In Their Hiring Process

For quite some time, everyone has known Google to ask some outrageous questions in their interview process. For example – how would you map out the entire city of San Francisco? Candidates have been prepared for it  – not knowing the question beforehand – but knowing how to respond quick on your feet and logically. An article came out recently that Google has decided to eliminate their brain teasers because there is no correlation between an answer to that type of question and how well a candidate can perform in their job. Instead hiring managers in Google and every where else are digging deeper into their candidates with behavioral questions like “Give me an example when you had to solve a difficult challenge in the workplace” or “What would your current manager say about you as an employee?” Answers to these questions say so much more. So readers, if you’re applying! It’s time to start preparing yourself!

Additionally Google has also come out and said that GPAs are not so much a factor for them anymore. Check out this interesting article here.
