Hello Kitty’s Latest Squad Member

Meet Aggretsuko! She doesn’t really look like this and I promise she’s got a cute exterior, but based off the intro video I just saw of her, she also has a dark side. Her tagline? She’s over it. Geez, can we adopt that too? Apparently Aggretsuko is just like all of her friends and Hello Kitty, but inside she’s got some rage. Notice how her name kind of just looks like another version of… “Aggressive?” or “Aggravate?” Aggretsuko is a red panda working as an office associate at a trading company (a working girl! We like this!) and she’s clearly packing a punch.

Watch her intro video here. I laughed the whole way through it.

Hello Kitty is Not a Cat

In the most surprising reveal ever, everyone discovered this morning that Hello Kitty is not a cat. WHAT?! She looks very much like a cat to me and since I’ve believed this for so long, it’s very difficult for me to think of her as anything else. So it turns out that Christine R. Yano who is an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii has been studying Hello Kitty for years. Another mind-blowing fact. I didn’t think this was even possible.

Anyways, here are the new facts that we know:

When Yano was preparing her written texts for the exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, she says she described Hello Kitty as a cat. “I was corrected — very firmly,” she says. “That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

Hello Kitty is British.
Kitty is actually named Kitty White and she has a full back story. She is a Scorpio. She loves apple pie. And she is the daughter of George and Mary White.

“She has a twin sister,” adds Yano. “She’s a perpetual third-grader. She lives outside of London. I could go on. A lot of people don’t know the story and a lot don’t care. But it’s interesting because Hello Kitty emerged in the 1970s, when the Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain. They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealized childhood, almost like a white picket fence. So the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time

I don’t even know. My childhood –

Hello Kitty Beer

Currently only being sold in Taiwan, Hello Kitty beer looks much more like a can of pop than an alcoholic beverage, which is probably why we weren’t surprised when we found out that it is a concoction of a fruit juice and beer cocktail. C’mon, did we really think it would be comparable to an IPA? It’s Hello Kitty, after all! With the beer being 2.5% alcohol, it’s unlikely that you will obtain anything more than a small buzz, but girls around the world will surely flock towards this drink in Taiwan – especially Hello Kitty fans.

One of my favorite sushi restaurants back in Seattle – Momiji – actually serves up a Hello Kitty cocktail and I like to imagine that it tastes a little bit like this without the rocks.

A Collection Part 33

Veronica told me just the other day that I was overdue for A Collection post. In looking through my archives, I see that it has only been TWO months. This is actually probably a new record for us. Like many “A Collection” posts, there is no theme. I wish I had something to say about how I’m feeling or why I chose the photographs that I did, but I choose them because at the time it is what is most pleasing to me!

Enjoy!

Hello Kitty Has a Human Body

To celebrate Elle Taiwan’s 20th anniversary, they decided to put this icon on their latest cover! She looks great, but for some reason this strangely reminds me of when Tyra Banks the doll turned into Tyra Banks the human in the old Lindsay Lohan movie – Life-Size. These things could be similar or just not related in any way at all.

Currently Craving:

When I was in high school, I would go back and forth between Strawberry Frosted Pop-Tarts and Chocolate Chip Eggo Waffles for breakfast. Life’s busy and I didn’t always have the time to sit down and have a bowl of cereal, pancakes, waffles out of an iron, fruit, eggs, bacon, a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk like they always advertise in commercials as a “balanced and complete breakfast.”

That’s just unrealistic.

  • Why do you have to drink both juice and milk at breakfast? That sounds like the worst combination ever.
  • Why do commercials advise children to eat so much at breakfast? Does this promote obesity in children? I don’t know…something to think about.
  • Why have I been forgetting to buy strawberry frosted pop-tarts at the grocery store for the past three years?
  • Doesn’t this just remind you of the film “Can’t Hardly Wait?”
  • There was that one time when I gave the Hello Kitty Meowberry a chance – not impressed. It has since been discontinued according to Wikipedia.
  • Pop-tarts were the original. Toaster Strudel was just an imitation.

In the News…

***** Hey readers! Brace yourself – it was a big news day!

The UK’s Daily Mail published a photo along with a headline naming the wrong Olsen twin. For most of their early lives (Ages 0-16,) I believed they were identical because they were always dressed alike, but these days I can tell the two of them apart within seconds. You don’t have to see it in their faces to tell who is who, but you will see it in the way that they are dressed. Need some help telling the fashion icons apart? Check out Fashionista for their guide here.
