Top 25 Seattle Albums of 2013

DJ Marc Collins recently revealed his top 25 Seattle albums for the year and I couldn’t agree more with it. It’s a fantastic list, but more importantly he has listed out albums from bands and artists that I respect, admire, and feel so lucky to have worked with in my time with music back in Seattle. Congratulations to Campfire OK, Pickwick, Macklemore, and The Flavr Blue. And though I haven’t worked with them personally – huge shout out to my former boss in Hey Marseilles! I remember a time when I was 16 and attending shows every weekend. The music I liked back then was poppy and it seemed like everyone was in a band. Then without any warning, something happened and the Seattle music scene kind of shut down. It returned when I was in college with a completely new sound and a more exciting genre. Right now, the music scene in Seattle is on fire and I couldn’t be happier. I think about it every single day and while there is no interesting music scene here in Silicon Valley, I’m okay with being loyal to just one area. Below is Marc’s full list. Congrats everyone!

1. Timothy Robert Graham – The Hidden Rose
2. Pickwick – Can’t Talk Medicine
3. Rose Windows – The Sun Dogs
4. Mary Lambert – Welcome to the Age of My Body
5. Glitterbang – Occasionally, Love Is War
6. Hobosexual – Hobosexual II
7. La Luz – It’s Alive
8. Nissim – Nissim
9. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – The Heist
10. The Flavr Blue – Brite Vices
11. Hey Marseilles – Lines We Trace
12. Jaymes Young – Dark Star
13. Nacho Picasso – High & Mighty
14. Campfire Ok – When You Have Arrived
15. Ra Scion – The Sickle & The Sword
16. Walking Papers – Walking Papers
17. Monogamy Party – False Dancers
18. Moondoggies – Adios I’m a Ghost
19. Cock & Swan – Secret Angles
20. Grave Babies – Crusher
21. Cumulus – I Never Meant It To Be Like This
22. Ravenna Woods – The Jackals
23. Mudhoney – Vanishing Point
24. Aaron Sprinkle – Water & Guns
25. Pearl Jam – Lightening Bolt

And here are my most anticipated Seattle Records of 2014:

Katie Kate – LP 2
Cataldo – Gilded Oldies
Motopony – New!

Trails and Ways – 3:15-3:45PM – Neumos

I think I fell in love with Trails and Ways last year because they reminded me so much of one of my favorite  bands here in Seattle. Their upbeat sounds and catchy tunes are enough to make anyone like them. Even though I started listening to them last year, I’ve always been interested in seeing them live and now …I was going to say  that I get to, but unfortunately, I have to miss this set due to another commitment. Worst. News. Ever. However, Sunday is always one of my favorite days because it’s a great end to the festival, but also everyone is just winding down. The high schoolers are burnt out from the weekend and everyone can just relax. We’ll see you there.

Hey Marseilles – 3:45-4:30PM – Main Stage

This local band from Seattle has come such a long way! I am so lucky to have been able to work alongside their lead singer Matt Bishop and am even more proud to see him and his band thriving right now. Even though they’ve played in Seattle more than a few times, I have never had the chance to see them live! Good for them for being selected to perform on the main stage though. Their latest album, “Lines We Trace” is one of my favorites from the year and as we all know, the real thing in person is always 10x better.

Cults – 5:00-5:45PM – Main Stage

Seeing Cults two years ago was one of my favorite moments from the Capitol Hill Block Party. I had the chance to see them up front (which I never do anymore) with my two friends Max and Mathew who ended up surprising me with their autographs after the show. It was such a treat and a memory (like all my memories from this fest) that I’ll always hold near and dear to my heart especially because I also had a chance to review them back then. The members of this band seem like such a sweet bunch of people and I am thrilled to hear their new album Static when it is released this fall. Two years ago, I watched them inside of Neumos and I am excited that this time around they’ll be playing for the masses on the Main Stage! UPGRADE!

The Flaming Lips – 8:15-10 – Main Stage

I have never seen The Flaming Lips live, but I’ve heard that they put on quite a show. Kevin says that we can’t miss it so I guess we’re going!

It’s A Day For Seattle Music

I’ve been talking up two Seattle bands lately – Hey Marseilles and Pickwick. Today won’t be any different. Today, Hey Marseilles released their new album Lines We Trace everywhere and if you haven’t heard it yet, it is a must. I didn’t get a chance to fully listen to the album until I got home from work, but while I was parking my car this evening I heard their single “Bright Stars Burning” on the radio and instantly had a proud moment. It’s amazing to witness people doing the things they love and it’s beautiful! And to hear someone on the radio who you have previously worked with…surreal.

In Pickwick news, I was unable to make it to their in-store shows these past couple of days, but I did want to let you all know that you can stream their entire album set to be released on Tuesday, March 12. here. Working with Pickwick last year on Quadstock was an absolute dream. I’m always so blown away by Seattle artists and their kindness – not that I had any doubt – but in case you haven’t heard, sometimes musicians have a reputation. The members of Pickwick are just as sweet in person as they sound.

Hey Marseilles Makes An Album

Readers, I have something special to share with you this evening! As most of you know, my most cherished connection to Seattle is the city’s music scene. It has been a part of my life throughout my teenage years and is still so important to me today. Like most people will say, music has gotten them through a lot of tough times. It gave me strength in embracing my differences with not always fitting in, it showed me my passion, and it brought me the start of my career. For that, I am grateful. It has also connected me to the most talented individuals I have ever met in my life.

Tomorrow, my former boss’s band – Hey Marseilles – will be releasing their album Lines We Trace! Please, everyone go listen to it and show them some love. To promote this big event, they shot an album trailer which my friend Nick Simmons and his friend Justin Henning helped create. It really is something and I am so proud for both Nick and Matt Bishop for their incredible talents.

Enjoy!

Out on the Town: 7/4

It may be a little bit too early to secure plans for the 4th of July, but who doesn’t like to be prepared? For the past several years, I have been celebrating the 4th in or around Seattle. Last year,  I think a few of my friends and I had watched the fireworks from underneath a freeway overpass by Volunteer Park. It’s not as sketch as it sounds. This year, however, I might just be having my very own adventure for the 4th for the first time in five years!

No word yet on what that might be, but regardless, Seattle is going to be bumpin’ this year.

Two of my favorite Seattle bands, Pickwick and Hey Marseilles will be performing for the 4th of July festivities at a popular spot for the holiday: Gasworks Park.

Make sure you get there early because these two bands are absolutely amazing.

Hey Marseilles – Elegy

Good morning! To jump into my first day of school routine this morning, I started playing the soundtrack to my day with the We Are Hunted app for Spotify. Right off the bat, I noticed that one of my favorite local bands Hey Marseilles was in the second slot on the front page! That’s huge!

Maybe I should rewind for a second.

First off, I love Spotify. I barely even touch my iTunes these days.

Secondly, I also adore We Are Hunted – a website that allows you to stream music from up-and-coming artists and bands.

Together, I love them both.

Third, Hey Marseilles is a local band that has gotten so much buzz in Seattle within the last year slash my former boss is in the band. Needless to say, anytime I hear anything about the band, I get excited especially when it involves these three things.

Robot Romantic

If the rest of my weekends as a senior are anything like the first weekend I just had, then this is going to be one incredible school year.

On Friday night, I was with some friends when we heard some house music from the street. Trying to follow the sound of it, we found ourselves next to a building, but the music wasn’t coming from there. It was across the street at a backyard birthday party supposedly for a Hey Marseilles band member. The party was going down at the Undre Arms Apartments, which has been cleared out for at least a month or so and will soon be demolished. The guys spinning are part of the DJ duo Robot Romantic and they were SO good. I probably could’ve stayed there forever just to listen to their music, but the night had to end at some point.

Party crasher. Check off the senior year bucket list.
