2020 American Music Awards Performances

Awards shows in 2020 are still very weird, but despite all of that, they are continuing and I will still watch. Granted these days, I’m mostly watching for BTS, but in order to keep in an open mind and to see what other music is out there, I’m watching the entire show. Another reason for this is that the American Music Awards literally put BTS as the closing performers which meant I had to watch three hours of performances I didn’t care too much about. However, out of those, here are the ones that caught my attention a little while longer.

Jennifer Lopez blew us all away at the Super Bowl this year, but that was no surprise. For as long as I’ve known her to be a performer, I’ve always been impressed. Have we ever seen a poor performance by her? Her duet with Maluma was so steamy, you couldn’t peel your eyes away from the screen. It’s worth mentioning that I didn’t mean “steamy” in a bad way. It was incredible as a performance from start to finish.

For some reason, I’m not able to find a full version of both performances by BTS, but lucky for us BANGTANTV has got it separated into two. While it’s just a fan cam, I tend to find these to be even more intimate and less theatrical. You feel like you’re actually there because you can hear the drones whizzing by!

The Kenny G cameo was everything, wasn’t it? The Weeknd had an amazing performance at the AMAs taking over the city of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, The Weeknd was incredibly snubbed by the Grammy nominations that came out this morning. After a successful album release and hit singles from 2020 alone, he received no recognition by the organization. This news is now overshadowing the performance that he just had and no one really knows what to do with the information.

Last, but not least – the throwback Bell Biv Devoe performance was so much fun! You may not know this, but any chance I get, I will always request “Poison.” And that’s exactly what I got from this performance. Sadly, there is no video, but like the things we love in the past, we’ll continue to cherish it forever. <3 (even with no evidence of it)

Shakira and J. Lo’s Entire Super Bowl Performance

In previous years, the halftime show was all that I cared about. We’ve since taken a bit more interest in the actual game (Go Chiefs!) and the entire football season as a whole that the halftime show sort of fell by the wayside. Nonetheless, I was still excited about Shakira and Jennifer Lopez coming together. They are two strong Latin American women that are powerhouses! Do I also even need to mention how disappointing Maroon 5’s performance was last year?

Here are my highlights:

  • We were completely reminded of how many hits Jennifer Lopez had as an R&B singer and while we accept her decision to stay in film, her days in music were unforgettable.
  • She may not have received an Oscar nom for her work in Hustlers, but there’s no denying how much of an honor it still is to perform the Half Time show at the Super Bowl and she killed it.
  • Jennifer Lopez brought out her daughter to perform alongside her and it was a very sweet moment
  • Did y’all know that Shakira can play BOTH drums and guitar? We knew, but we sort of forgot.
  • The Kobe Bryant tribute was nearly missed, but we think it was when the stadium and the lights at some point were purple and yellow to represent The Lakers.
  • There will never be a more unforgettable GIF than the one that was Shakira’s tongue.

Say what you will about the stripper pole, but we kind of loved it. I think it used to represent something that leaned more negative and it doesn’t need to be that way anymore. The work on the pole isn’t easy and it’s 2020. There are people taking pole taking classes as a workout and aren’t necessarily in that profession that it is known for. Not only was it a nod to “Hustlers,” but it was empowering in its own way.

2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards Red Carpet

Kathryn Newton in Valentino

I know it’s a little bit early to be saying this, but this might be my favorite red carpet set in a very long time. We are loving the color, the beautiful black gowns, and the off-the-shoulder looks. It was hard to narrow down my favorites and even as I’m thinking about it, I don’t know if I even can. We still have the upcoming Grammy’s and the Oscars, but this has set the bar high!

Versace

We had to start with this photo because it is absolutely iconic. Jennifer Lopez doesn’t even look like she’s aged since the last time she wore the original rendition of this dress 20 years ago at the Grammys. I finally had a chance to catch Jennifer Lopez last night in “Hustlers” and she blew me away with her performance. This is her year and while she’s always been recognized as a triple threat, she deserves every award that comes her way.

2019 Met Gala Red Carpet

Liza Koshy in Balmain

I had to look up the “Camp” theme several times to figure out what it truly meant. I’m still not quite sure if I understand the definition of it. My takeaway is that it’s pink, tulle, and crowns and we do not hate it. In all honesty, I’m a huge fan of the pink carpet and I loved many of the looks from the evening. However, I will say that this year was the most extravagant. What I loved about previous years was how wearable these looks have been and instead it’s turned into a little bit more of a spectacle than I would have liked. Maybe that’s what the point of the Met Gala is. It’s supposed to be a showcase of whimsey and imagination and if that’s the. case then I will get on board next year, but for now I want to hold onto what I thought made this event on the first Monday in May every year so special.

2019 Oscars After Parties

Gabrielle Union in Valentino

If you thought the red carpet was the main event, think again! Coming up, you’ll find looks that are a little more daring. The slits are higher, hemlines shorter, and everyone that wasn’t invited to the actual event shows up for the party. These looks were designed for the after parties and it’s something to get excited about! Many of the nominees arrive to the after party events in a second look! Like every year, this year’s event was no exception and everyone looked grand.

Readers, any standout favorites for y’all?

2019 Oscars Red Carpet

Constance Wu in Versace

The award show has only just begun, but we decided to get a head start on our post. There are so many standout looks this year and a few surprises. I found myself falling in love with a look worn by an actress who has a history of never having looks that impress me. Anything can happen! This year, the awards show is without a host, but we honestly haven’t noticed much of a difference. Here are the looks from this evening and I’ll be sure to indicate my favorites!

2019 Grammy’s Red Carpet

Leon Bridges

Oh man, if I had to pick the most enjoyable award show to watch of the year, it would have to be this one. From start to finish, I loved so many of the performances. There were even some that surprised me! There were also many artists that won this year who were so deserving: Dua Lipa, H.E.R. and Kacey Musgraves to name a few. Every year the red carpet at The Grammy’s tends to be hit or miss and this year is no different. I have fewer favorites than I usually do, but it’s still important for us to showcase them.
