Hey Marseilles – Bright Stars Burning
I know I just posted this the other day, but look! They performed this song on KEXP and it was great and lovely so…
you get a double dose of that.

I can barely describe the feeling I had when I heard this song playing on KEXP yesterday. Yes, KEXP plays tracks from local artists all the time. No, it isn’t every day that you get to hear a band that you directly worked with playing on the radio. It is the BEST feeling and was the most satisfying part of my job – not the radio thing, but being able to celebrate with a former band on their achievements.
Congrats!
Happy Friday!
Passion Pit @ Bumbershoot from KEXP’s sessions!
YAY.
Check out all the songs here – but this one’s my favorite. And of course it is “Take A Walk!”
My hour long commute in the morning is rough. Thank goodness this song came on yesterday to help me get through it.
Bonus treat above: A live stripped version at Sasquatch Music Festival. These ones are always more fun, but in case you want the original – here it is below!

I know we’re quite a few weeks away from this event, but hey – let me just say that Starbucks puts on some damn good shows. I have been impressed with their KEXP collaboration concert series Little Big Show this year because not only are they featuring up-and-coming acts, but they are also highlighting some of Seattle’s most talented!
Dum Dum Girls? C’mon, you know it’s going to be an awesome show. And Craft Spells – seeing them at Bumbershoot last year was one of the best performances I caught all year. For only $15, I’d say that’s a steal.

Technology and the way it is changing the way we connect with others and interact is cool. Seriously. It blows my mind to this day that we are doing things online that we never thought were possible when I was a 90′s kids. One of those things, for me, is being able to stream music festivals online from the comfort of my home. Sure, you don’t get the experience of being there and having the person next to you sweat all up in your space, but it’s the next best thing – it really is. Not being able to see the act, being in an overcrowded space, and being shoved by fan girls always trying to get up to the front are the things I can avoid through streaming.
If you’re looking for a little live music to accompany whatever it is you’re doing tonight, check out KEXP’s stream from SXSW – Andrew Bird is up next!
I was definitely on my winter break because the amount of content I posted would not have been possible during finals week or even a regular week. Random fact – this was not exactly a year ago, but give or take a few days, the new Facebook layout was revealed and now that same thing is happening to us once again with the Timeline.
Well, back to what happened a year ago…
- Mayor Mike McGinn announced that the Dale Chihuly Museum and the KEXP headquarters will be moving into the Seattle Center.
- We learned about the Seattle music scene from 12 local bands in the short series $5 Cover.
- I made up my winter quarter television schedule. RIP Hellcats.

- The Kardashians got serious for the holidays.
- E! never launched this show, thank goodness!
- We learned that a school’s library is a nice alternative for your own bed.
- Flavorwire let us know what our favorite 2010 movies said about us.
I cannot believe how many wonderful things are going on this weekend! If you don’t have plans yet, start making them!
First off, I am extremely jealous of everyone )including my BFF Max) attending Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco this weekend. What an amazing lineup! I really wish YouTube would’ve struck a deal with the festival organizers for this one so that I could stream the sets live again like I did for Lollapalooza. The Shins, Ellie Goulding, The Black Keys, Beirut, Grouplove…I have to stop now before I make myself even more jealous.

Over here in the Northwest, we’ve also got our own music festival going on across the water this weekend as well. Doe Bay Fest has garnered a ton of buzz these past few months and it is well deserved. I mean…have you SEEN the lineup? It doesn’t matter if you did or didn’t, but you should know that tickets for the music festival sold out even before the lineup was released at all! That’s saying something. Before I leave Seattle, this will be one of the last things I do.

If you’re trying to stay a little closer to Seattle this weekend, then I suggest you snag tickets for you and your friends for the SAM Remix going on tomorrow. Northern Departure, Daydream Vacation, and my new favorite band Craft Spells will be performing too! It’s a very music-oriented weekend, people. Along with the music performances, SAM Remix, which will be down at the Olympic Sculpture Park tomorrow, will also be hosting an outdoor movie screening of Grease, having activities, and on-site artists. Learn more about the event and purchase your ticket here.
The 2nd Annual 12th Ave Festival will be returning to Capitol Hill once again this Sunday, which will run from Noon-6PM. The cost to attend is free, but there will be food available to purchase (all under $5) from some of my favorite Capitol Hill restaurants including Cafe Presse, Poquitos, Cupcake Royale, and many many more.

Century Ballroom in Capitol Hill will be debuting their first flea market on Saturday, which will be a part of their new year-round flea market schedule. I wish I could give you more information on it, but since it’s the very first one, I don’t have much to say yet. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to check it out though so make sure you stop by for some treasured goods! I’m totally diggin’ on the idea of Capitol Hill jumping on the flea market band wagon though.

Last, but not least, Seapony, Gold Leaves, and Math and Physics Club will be performing tomorrow as part of the KEXP Seattle Center Concerts at the Mural series. These weekly shows at the mural are free and from what I’ve heard, ton of fun! Doors are at 5; bands play at 6.

I am most excited to see them at this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party! They’ve been providing me the motivation for studying for my finals this week.

Today’s Song of the Day comes from a new up-and-coming local band called Campfire Ok. These guys and one girl have been blowing up everywhere and will be performing at the upcoming SXSW music festival.

After 10 months, Mayor Mike McGinn announced his plans for the Seattle Center Project today. Would Dale Chihuly’s new glass musuem or KEXP’s headquarters win?
Sisters Asy, Chloe, and Maia are the three young girls that comprise local Seattle indie band Smoosh. This song is one of my favorites, but I love how this KEXP video turned out because it is beautiful. Watch the drummer. She has crazy energy when she is performing! The song is so simple and delicate, but in some ways I also feel that I am getting sucked into the performance. Oh yeah, the girls are 18 and younger. Learning these things makes me wish I was more accomplished.
Whenever I am in my intense study mode, I make sure to log off of my blog, Facebook, and email. I minimize my main browser window with at least ten tabs open and I switch my iTunes library to play only my “Study Music” playlist. It is a playlist that includes an array of artists including Death Cab for Cutie, John Mayer, and Sara Bareilles. I had to force myself to make this playlist last year because when I was listening to music while studying, I used to have my library on random and if I didn’t like a song I would have to keep pressing “next” until I did find one I liked. As a way to eliminate wasted time, I made a playlist full of songs that I knew I already liked and that were essentially more “soft” than say…a Girl Talk album so that I could at least focus.
Last night’s weather conditions left me a little more distracted than usual. I diverted from the playlist and discovered KEXP’s YouTube account which has 1200+ videos of in-studio performances from both local and mainstream bands and artists. Once I discovered Florence + the Machine’s “Cosmic Love,” I HAD to scroll through all of them. Thank you KEXP for doing what you do.
KEXP is a radio station owned by the University of Washington. Earlier this year, they were in competition for the old Fun Forest location to be their headquarters instead of Dale Chiluy’s new glass museum.
