How to Spend a Sunday Afternoon

photo cred: Stereogum

I don’t think I truly learned how to appreciate a weekend until I started working. My parents used to tell me that college would be the hardest four years of my life. Oh how wrong they were… I think it’s the time after college that becomes more challenging what with trying to balance a work life and social life at the same time.

This weekend, I participated in my first Seafair and today I am relaxing to the Lollapalooza live stream. Bombay Bicycle Club, you never fail to put a smile on my face. Enjoy y’all! Someday we’ll be there for real!

Lollapalooza 2012

Click the poster for the source.

I’m not exactly sure how this lineup got to be Chinese New Year themed. It is kind of lols, but as always the lineup is great so there’s no need to dive into that.

In things that do not fly…

  • London riots
  • Stealing a band’s trailer and gear

I can’t remember the last time a riot solved ANYTHING. Do you?

Secondly, I was shocked to find out yesterday that after their set at Lollapalooza, someone had stolen Portugal. The Man’s van and trailer with all of their equipment inside. It is heartbreaking to hear that especially after they had played one of their best shows at the Chicago music festival. Since Monday, the band has been asking for the public’s help in retrieving their van back slash replacing their expensive gear. The van was discovered today, but sans equipment.

Among the pieces of equipment stolen were eight guitars, an electric organ, an electric piano, numerous musical pedals, drums speakers and microphones, an iPod and a banjo, according to a list of equipment released by the band. A cost estimate for the stolen items wasn’t immediately available, but the band noted the list was incomplete.

In its tweets, the band asked that anyone who is able to should print out the list of equipment and check local pawn shops; the group can be contacted at via Twitter via @portugaltheman if anyone knows anything about the theft.

If you can imagine…the time and money that goes into purchasing this equipment, it would take years – maybe even their whole musical career to acquire it all. I can only hope that their equipment will be returned to them safely, but I am disappointed in hearing this news.

Song of the Day

Portugal. The Man – The Bottom

I am currently watching Portugal. The Man’s set live at Lollapalooza on YouTube here as I type! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, Portugal. The Man is an electrifying group of performers out of the Northwest. I have been a fan since my junior high days and even had the opportunity to work with them back in high school when the venue I booked at was able to book them for a hearing benefit show. If you ever have a chance to see them live – take it! It will surely be a show that you will never forget as you will have an incredible time dancing along and moving to the beat of their music. I am blown away by the fact that I had the privilege of seeing them in a small venue years ago and now seeing them on the bill at Lollapalooza.

The Males That Blog

I cannot even begin to tell you how refreshing it is to discover a blog written by a male or better yet – a group of males! These days, blogs are overrun by women writing about fashion, style, home decor, etc. – don’t get me wrong – those are some of my favorite types of blogs, but reading a blog written from a guy’s perspective is sometimes so much better. It’s nice to see guys that care about the same things I care about, but in a masculine context. Refinery 29 wrote a post today about some of their favorite guy bloggers in the Chicago area, but I decided to extend this post to include some of my personal favorites from all over. Enjoy everyone! And don’t worry – even though it is male-focused, there is something for the ladies too. This is also kind of a follow-up post to the one I did back in January 2010.

[Cool Material]

Believe it or not, out of the 27 blogs I read on a daily basis, Cool Material is the only male-focused blog in that lineup. Highlighting new products in fashion, technology and design, Cool Material brings forth the items that every guy will want on their wishlist. These writers are the coolest of the bunch and are nothing, but effortless in their style.

[Mr. Kim Says]

Mr. Kim Says is kind of a hodge-podge blog in that I don’t exactly know what the focus is, but I like it regardless. It is very similar to a Tumblr (if it’s not already a Tumblr,) but it makes me laugh at the end of the day so I guess that’s all that matters.

[Metrodad]

If you’ve been following Yow Yow! for some time now, then you know that I’ve been a huge fan of MetroDad for over a year now. The identity behind Metrodad is still unknown, but that’s not the most important factor. Whoever he is, I find him to be intelligent, humorous, and a lovable father to his “Peanut.” It’s like the guy speaks my language, but that’s just because he’s relatable and I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels that way. He’s got a gazillion fans and his posts seem to always strike a chord with me. I once found myself wimpering away during a reading of one. Shameless.

[Lottie and Doof]

There is nothing more attractive than a man that cooks. I mean, how many times do I have to say it?

[Los Angelist]

Sophisticated and sleek, Los Angelist is catered for male readers that are confident, savvy, and in the know. The site is so simple and there is not much on the blog that is geared towards me, but yet I still find myself hooked on the blog regularly.

[Josh Spear]

So I have to admit that I’ve got a little bit of an obsession with this blog. Having read it for a couple years now, Josh Spear still remains to be one of the most up-to-date and relevant blogs in my roll focusing on culture, technology, music, gadget, designs, travel and more.

[Man Up Chicago]

Man Up Chicago is a blog I just discovered via Refinery 29 and even though I know nothing about Chicago, lucky for me, this blog is not just city-focused. I actually found myself pretty interested in some of the posts especially all of their recent Lollapalooza coverage! By the way, did anyone catch the live stream today? I was able to watch Delta Spirit, Foster the People, White Lies, and Two Door Cinema Club all while I was at work. Awesome. Technology!

YouTube collaborates with Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits

After the successful streaming of Coachella’s performances earlier this year, YouTube has decided to collaborate with Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits to bring the masses the festival straight from your computer. It’s not exactly the same thing, but hey, I’ll take it.

Lollapalooza Early Bird Tickets Completely Sold Out

Every year, Lollapalooza remains to be one of the most anticipated music festivals in the country along with Coachella and Bonnaroo. Considering how quickly Coachella tickets sold out this year, it is no surprise that Lollapalooza’s Early Bird Tickets have managed to already sell out before the official lineup was even released. The lineup will be announced on April 26th and for now, only 3-day passes are being sold for $215 since the early tickets sold out in one hour for $185.

How fitting!  Rivers Cuomo says of the image, “I just loved this photo of Jorge Garcia — it just had this amazing vibe. We didn’t want to do a fourth self-titled record and we knew people would refer to it as ‘the Hurley record’ even if left it without that title, so we just called it ‘Hurley.’ No words are on the cover because all we wanted was his amazing face.” [source]

Justin Bieber is the new face of Proactiv.

- Meet the new MTV TJ [Twitter Jockey] Gabbi Gregg. She beat out 20 contestants and was known as being the plus-size fashion blogger. The 24-year old has earned a $100,000 contract as the official social media face of the network. Read more about her future plans as the new TJ here.

The UK’s Metropolitan Police has released a new interactive PSA. So far, every PSA from the UK that I have seen continues to be extremely powerful. It’s definitely something that should be here, but isn’t.

- Lady Gaga managed to make out with a fan WHILE she was crowd surfing during her performance at Lollapalooza this past weekend. It takes skills to multi-task.

- Homegrown sandwiches on Capitol Hill will begin serving dinner on August 16h.
