Articles to Read Today

Typically when I go through my blogs every day, I am reading pretty short posts. Seeing an article come across my browser though is always kind of a refreshing treat. I found three this week that I thought were pretty interesting and wanted to share with all of you!

Mark Zuckerberg Joins The $1 Salary Club is an interesting piece on how CEOs reduce their salary for the greater good of the company and mainly because what their product does usually doesn’t involve making that much money to begin with.

We’ve also got another piece by the lovely Molly Young on Our Delusional Celebration of the Entrepreneur.

And my favorite! A study that followed 268 Harvard Undergraduate men beginning in 1938 on What It Takes To Live A Happy Life

Mark Zuckerberg’s First Webpage at 15

This takes me back to the days! I still remember being nine years old geeking out and telling all my friends that I was creating websites using Expage, Angelfire, and Geocities. At some point I upgraded to using a domain and then…well… you know Yow Yow! Everyone had to start somewhere, okay? Me and Mark Zuckerberg just happened to start at the same place. Ain’t no thang. Yesterday, news came out that someone had found his Angelfire website that he created back when he was 15 and as expected, it is lols. Can you expect anything less though from an awkward 15-year old? No, so we’re gonna cut the guy some slack because he’s pretty successful and we can’t really touch that.

Check out all the details of his page here

Mark Zuckerberg releases Facebook News today

Today, Mark Zuckerberg made a live announcement via Facebook (HOBviously) in regards to some changes that the social networking site will…face. [lol?]

At first, the announcement was somewhat slow. Zuckerberg discussed the last five years of Facebook before explaining the five years to come and then finally getting to the point that we were all waiting for.

Facebook will begin having group chats and video chat in collaboration with Skype.

Oh hmm this sounds a lot like Google+ doesn’t it? Funny, that Mark Zuckerberg should make this announcement soon after Google had introduced Google+. In an effort to deter Google+ from stealing their thunder, Facebook also prohibited users of Google + to export contacts and friends from Facebook.

Ugh. Too much social media talk.

What If Social Media Were Reality?

I’m always fascinated by how Facebook’s online terms can seep into our every day lives. How did Mark Zuckerberg come up with poking, wall posts, “liking” things, etc? If anyone ever said these terms to you in person, you would know in an instant that it came from Facebook. Since social media is not as personable, users often leave themselves as an open book on these social networking sites, which can be quite dangerous. To explain how dangerous it can be, Nico Muhly decided to promote his opera Two Boys by creating this video of him acting out Facebook and Twitter terms in real life.

Watch as Muhly literally “follows” someone after just meeting them and asking strangers on the street to be his friend in this creative video.

In the News…

The best stuff happens in December, I swear.

- Have you always dreamed of becoming a stylist to the stars? Here’s your chance! MTV Skins and Lookbook.nu – one of my favorite street style websites is collaborating on a new contest in which the two winners will have a chance to style the entire cast of Skins alongside the Series Costume Director Edward K. Gibbon. Keep in mind that you will not have access to designer clothes because the actors of Skins portray real teenagers, which means these are brand new actors working with scripts even written by young adults. Winners will also get a $1,000 shopping spree to Diesel. Learn more details here.

- Bring It On: The Musical has announced their cast here. They better not ruin my favorite movie.

- Powerhouse PR firm KCD is launching a new digital division. [Source]

- The first photo from Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s wedding. More exclusive photos will be released to People Magazine this Friday. [Source]

- Mark Zuckerberg is the person of the year. [Source]

- Justin Bieber will cover Vanity Fair. [Source]

Can Do Better

I honestly believed that Girl Talk releasing his new album today would be the biggest news because he basically broke the internet. Seriously, it was on every site that I read through today. Let’s face it. Everyone loves free music.

However, I’d like to introduce to you a new website called Can Do Better. Do you remember how in the movie, “The Social Network,” Mark Zuckerberg created a site before Facebook that would allow his peers to rate “hot girls?” Sorry, for the spoiler – it doesn’t ruin anything. Well “Can Do Better” takes things to a whole new level.

Have you ever pursued someone only to find out that they are out of your league? Your friends probably told you that you could do “way better.” What does that even mean? On what level? On “Can Do Better” users upload a picture of themselves with a picture of the person that they are interested in and then randomly WE (the visitors) are the ones that rate if he can do better or she can do better. Basically, this is strictly about the looks.

If you’re not into the whole superficial thing, this website is not for you. If you’re looking to rate though, it can be pretty addicting. Not gonna lie, I did at least ten clicks before I decided that this site was worthy enough to write about. Don’t judge. I’m not saying that this site is exactly a good idea, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.

I have to warn you though – the song associated with the website will begin to play as soon as you get to the page. Don’t be alarmed. There’s a stop button at the button of the page.

Facebook Down Last Night – Set To Reveal New Features

Facebook isn’t going anywhere any time soon, that’s for sure. Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg has been hard at work trying to create new features for the social networking website while still keeping it efficient. In a new article from, Just So You Know, features discussed included groups [don't we already have it?] and a dashboard to manage all of your apps.

I skimmed the article, but nothing grabbed my attention. So if you’re a huge Facebook fan and you’re about to make some nit picky comment to me  that the groups described in the article are nothing like the groups we have right now on our Facebook page, I don’t need to hear it. I trust Mark…kind of. Whatever he does, I’ll still be right there with him. To be honest, I can’t tell the difference between all of the apps, features, etc and I’m okay with that.

Facebook Stories

This week, Facebook will announce that they have reached 500 million users. With this news, also comes the launch of Facebook stories. [aww] Users will be asked to share how the social networking website has affected their lives.

“Facebook Stories” will be a collection of posts up to 420 words — the status update word limit — grouped around geography and themes like love, grief and natural disaster, Swisher reports.

But remember, by doing so, you’re granting Facebook “an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free, worldwide right and license (with right to sublicense) to use, distribute, reproduce, create derivate works of, perform and display Your Content, in whole or part, on or off the Facebook site for any purpose, commercial or otherwise without acknowledgment, consent or monetary or other compensation to you.”

yikes…this makes me a little bit nervous. It also reminds me of like a weird Pro-Active infomercial – I hope they turn it into that because it would be FANTASTIC and lolworthy.

In the News…

- Kate Gosselin spilled in an exclusive interview w/ People Magazine about how they told their kids about the split.

- TMZ has obtained Jon and Kate’s divorce papers after two days. [I just wanted to say that I think this is disgusting. Can they not get any privacy during this time?]

- Emma Watson had her choice of any Ivy League college and she has chosen Columbia University.

Her full name is Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson but for obvious reasons, she is taking her middle name. She is already listed in the student directory but isn’t releasing this information personally for the sake of wanting to be normal. Understandable.

- Nick Jonas is in Washington DC this week to meet with Senator Lautenberg to discuss funding and research for Juvenile Diabetes.

- Casting is underway for a possible Facebook movie to be titled, “The Social Network.” Shia Labeouf and Michael Cera are possible candidates to play the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg.

- Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo have ended their relationship
