Saucy in Santa Cruz

Who dis?! We find out that we’re spending a day in Santa Cruz and of course we turned this into a whole outfit thing. In case any of you are wondering, Santa Cruz doesn’t exactly fit that bohemian vibe that we’re attempting here, but that didn’t matter to us, clearly. Over the summer, some of the employees at work wanted to treat our interns out to a fun afternoon in Santa Cruz. I hadn’t been back since winter 2012 so I was pretty excited to spend a hot summer day there. And okay, it’s no Disney Land, but the rides aren’t bad. More importantly, have we mentioned how much we LOVE Skeeball?!

I wasn’t planning on beaching while in Santa Cruz, but this was the perfect outfit for everything else we did that day. Aside from the fact… that we had to take our scarf off during the rollercoaster and my booties got sand in them. Other than that – 100%! I actually haven’t worn this scarf since I had been back in Seattle and even then I had just worn it pretty simply around my neck. Draping it like this was more fun!

Blondie

Someone once commented that they thought the backdrop that I selected for this photo was really tacky. I actually love it! It’s outside of a movie theater and it’s a little bit different, but it’s so fun. I had just gotten back from Seattle after dyeing my hair even more blonde; we almost didn’t recognize ourselves. Seriously, who is this girl? It’s funny to see how my style has evolved over the last 3 years since moving to California because this isn’t normally an outfit we’d wear in Seattle – not even if we were just visiting. I don’t know if it was the outfit itself or moreso the blonde hair, but we felt confident. It’s 6 months later and after returning back home to Seattle again, we decided not to color our hair. We’re actually letting it grow out so that we can get the blonde out for good, but I’ll always appreciate this time in my life – in my 20’s where we just wanted to try something new. I don’t know how and I can’t put it into words, but this blonde hair changed me in the last 6 months.

Our Favorite Looks of 2016

It’s way more fun to share your 12 favorite outfits from the year instead of the ones that just flopped, right?! We don’t always get it right, but luckily the shame of an outfit gone wrong usually only lasts a day. #blessed that my coworkers are always there to give me that immediate feedback. On the upside, I love the outfits that I’ve selected as my favorites for the year. We love that some of these outfits are ones that we’ve worn more than once and have recycled with other items from our closet to make them more versatile. And if there’s one thing that we appreciate more this year in these outfits than the ones we ended up hating – it’s that “less really is more.” Thanks Ma.

Sometimes You Just Want To Be A Girly Girl

Chambray Shirt – Madewell / Tulle Dress – H&M / Booties – Munro @Nordstrom

The next few outfits after this one are what I call my experimental period. You’ll start to notice soon that I was really testing the waters and pushing the boundaries on some of the outfit combinations I was putting together. Not all of them always worked, but at least we now have the photographic evidence on why they didn’t and we won’t try them again 🙂

On this particular day, I just really wanted to incorporate this tulle into my outfit. Every day, I saw it hung up on my closet and thought well, if I’m not going to wear it, I should get rid of it. I was determined to find a place for it though so I put on the dress (which I only wore once for Halloween for a princess costume) and put my chambray shirt over it tying it in the front. This was my most girliest outfit yet. It’s not that it was a terrible ensemble – it wasn’t – but it also didn’t feel like me. Because the top half of the dress is done up with sequins, I was itchy and uncomfortable all day. The tulle is also VERY sheer, but luckily for us – we avoided what could have been a massive wardrobe malfunction. All in all… lesson learned and now that we’ve made an outfit work with the dress, I think we can safely say that it is time to retire it.

I’d be lying to you if I said every day I woke up in the morning 100% knowing what I was going to wear and was completely satisfied with it. 85% of the time I plan my outfits the night before, but I still have those days where I might spend 90 minutes trying on 5 different outfits before I leave the house. Even then, I’m still not okay with it. This was one of those days where I felt a little bit uninspired and decided to borrow my friend and coworker’s cardigan. Sandy is also my photographer most days! I really love the contrast in these two photos though because as many of you know, I wasn’t always super comfortable being in front of the camera – throwback to that space helmet that we loved so much in college and always had over my head. That’s why this photo below is still funny to be because clearly, I still am very bashful about this thing that we’re doing!

What We Wore to Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving at my company is kind of a big deal and I actually love it. Since I left Seattle, I’ve only celebrated Thanksgiving once back home. It was that very first year and after that I realized it didn’t make the most sense since I was always coming home the next month for Christmas too. There are a lot of my coworkers that don’t get to make it home for this holiday though and every year we get to celebrate it at work by dressing up our cafe, having an amazing Thanksgiving dinner prepared for us by our chefs and spending it with each other. This year, I managed to find myself at the mall the same week as the  dinner and you know… decided to buy a new outfit – that sweater and that skirt. I had been wanting a corduroy skirt for a while and this one from Brandy is one that I actually wear often these days. It goes with everything. I also thought this lavender sweater would dress it up a little bit more too, plus the color pairings just seemed perfect.

When We Try to be Professional

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 11.15.02 PM

I work at a start-up so fancy business professional attire isn’t required for me, however, that doesn’t mean that I can just slum it. I can’t even bring myself to wear a t-shirt and jeans most days – y’all know that’s just not me anyways. I also work with a lot of external people in my company as well so I try to maintain appearances. On this particular day, I felt like dressing up a little bit more. This is probably an outfit that I would have worn when working in finance and while I’ve gotten rid of most of those pieces, there are still a few that I have kept behind (just in case!) You never know when you’ll need them. This is one of my favorite outfits to wear to work because it’s length-appropriate, professional, and still makes me feel comfortable throughout a work day.

Dress – Aritzia / Tights – Free People / Booties – Munro (Nordstrom)

We’re sliding in a quick post before we get ready for our birthday party tonight! I’d never worn this outfit before and I was a little bit hesitant to pair my t-shirt dress with these tights. This dress is from Aritzia, of course, and perfect for every day wear. I bought these tights actually from Nordstrom Rack – quite the steal! And we wore these boots because it complimented everything pretty well. This sitting pose is kind of awkward and actually we haven’t done one since this time, but it’s still kind of funny to me. I don’t do the whole serious thing very well.

How Do We Get These Walls

Black sleeveless blouse – Madewell / Back pants – Uniqlo / Booties – Munro via Nordstrom / Purse – Vince Camuto

My friend Sandeep just returned from an extravagant European vacation so after her and I caught up over a Thai dinner a couple of weeks ago, we decided to venture out over to the nearby Santana Row. I didn’t think that we were going to be able to find a nice backdrop for a photo, but this was a hidden gem. Doesn’t it look like we travel really really far away to some place amazing instead of an outdoor shopping mall?! I’m donning my usual uniform this summer – mostly all black and that wavy hair that I just can’t stop spending an extra 15-20 minutes on every morning.

I Got Hops

Chambray shirt – Madewell / Skirt – H&M / Scarf – Aritzia / Booties – Munro via Nordstrom

It turned out to be pretty gray today so we bundled up! This is actually kind of a drastic change from the all white outfit I wore just a couple of days ago when it was completely sunny. We decided to have a little bit more fun with this post though so Leah captured a photograph of me getting some air! Surprisingly, we only needed just 4 takes to get this! Having grown up in Seattle, I never really realized how much of a damper (pun intended) the weather can have on our overall health and wellbeing. Even though it rained just a little bit today, I found myself feeling more tired and at one point even a little sick. Turns out a few of my co-workers shared the same sentiments as well. Maybe it’s all in my head or maybe it’s just what the weather does to us all. Whatever the case, I’m really glad I got to feel like I was skipping ahead to fall today!
