Day in a Life of a Talent Buyer

Having worked in aspects of booking and promotions for the local Seattle music scene since I was in high school, I often get questions from people asking me what it is that I do. When Quadstock rolls around, people think it’s all gravy and that there really is nothing to it.

False, bro. This job is stressful and anyone who’s done it will tell you the exact same thing. It is, however, a long term project that produces rewards like the moment when it all comes together.

That’s why I’m glad that The Stranger decided to publish an interview today with two talent buyers in the Seattle area. In the post, Melissa Darby and Hunter Motto, who book for the Crocodile, tell it like it is.

Get ready to learn everything you never knew about the booking process here.

What I’m Watching

Brandon Fuller | Billboard

Technology and the way it is changing the way we connect with others and interact is cool. Seriously. It blows my mind to this day that we are doing things online that we never thought were possible when I was a 90′s kids. One of those things, for me, is being able to stream music festivals online from the comfort of my home. Sure, you don’t get the experience of being there and having the person next to you sweat all up in your space, but it’s the next best thing – it really is. Not being able to see the act, being in an overcrowded space, and being shoved by fan girls always trying to get up to the front are the things I can avoid through streaming.

If you’re looking for a little live music to accompany whatever it is you’re doing tonight, check out KEXP’s stream from SXSW – Andrew Bird is up next!

SXSW Stream: Jay-Z

On March 12th, Jay-Z will stream his entire performance at SXSW on the internet. The digital age is great, isn’t it? Since the rapper is performing in an American Express sponsored show,

Pitchfork reports that attendees of the festival who have both American Express cards and Interactive badges can gain access to the concert by syncing their Twitter account with their cards.

I think this still means that everyone can stream the show if they want. The stream will be available here.

“Shit people at SXSW DON’T say” By The Spinto Band

I can’t vouch for any of these things since I’ve never been to SXSW, but this is the first video in the series that I’ve seen related to music festivals. I’m willing to bet it’s all true. Kudos to The Spinto Band for just being downright awesome.

2011 Sunset Junction Festival Cut – Lineup of Bands’ Prices Released

photo cred | Jonathan Leibson

A common misconception that I hear often is that the production behind a music festival is inexpensive. Or maybe people know that it is expensive, but they just don’t know how expensive it actually is. After being involved with aspects of this industry, I no longer have these unrealistic views of trying to reach for something that I can’t have. There is a whole lot of funding that goes into making an event or a music festival like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza etc. so successful, but many people take that for granted.

When that happens, music festivals die. San Diego’s Street Scene 2009 was one of the best festivals I’ve ever been to and unfortunately, the run of that festival ended that year. Last summer, Los Angeles’ Sunset Junction was denied a permit due to unpaid fees and as a result not only did the festival NOT happen, everyone who was set to be a part of the festival lost their money. This includes the festival’s acts, vendors, and ticket purchasers.

Court records released yesterday just how much these bands were supposed to earn from their performance. Click the cut to be enlightened:

Festival Essentials

As much as I love attending music festivals, there are a few things that I believe could make my experience much more pleasant. Sure, the festivals I go to have porter potties stationed throughout the area, but if it were to me – I would choose a regular restroom. Unfortunately, that decision isn’t up to me so Urban Outfitters is now selling a little package called “Festival Essentials” that will include everything you need to keep things sanitary for your weekend out. The package includes an air freshener, two lip balms, toilet seat covers, tissues, wet wipes, and face wipes. I think  this is a genius idea and just perfect for any music festival.

Purchase it for $15 here.

Song of the Day

Electric Guest – This Head I Hold

Happy Saturday everyone! The weather outside my window today is absolutely miserable, but not wanting to let that get me down I decided to choose a Song of the Day that really gets you moving. Electric Guest is a new band I started listening to recently and they’ll be at this year’s Sasquatch music festival!
