Home for the Holidays

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

There’s nothing worse than being sick during your vacation and of course the holidays! In the month of December, my company gives us a generous amount of time off so that we can get away from work, unwind and actually relax, and spend time with friends and families. A lot of my coworkers actually go on elaborate trips during this time and I always get so jealous, but it’s also the perfect time for me to just return home to Seattle too.

On the first day of break, I came down with the flu. Hard. And it was absolutely miserable – so bad that I didn’t even get to go visit all of my favorite places and eat at all of my favorite restaurants! I was feeling like my entire body was being torn apart piece by piece. My head was aching so badly that I felt it would explode. My joints were almost swollen with pain. This is when I decided that I should consider consuming immunity shots to help alleviate the symptoms. Honestly, the little bottles filled with the goodness of Vitamins A, D, C, and K sis impress me. I really feel that these health supplements can increase the level of antioxidants in the body which can prevent flu-like symptoms from occurring.

Anyway, I would have to say that even though the flu was affecting me badly, I was able to keep up with my normal life to some extent–I’m especially surprised at how many photos we were able to capture from the trip. Above is a snapshot of Oddfellows’ outdoor holiday decorations that I took when I met up with Max, Veronica, and her boyfriend Alex over brunch.

The Best Time to Visit Seattle

It’s actually been a few weeks since I returned from my trip back home! It almost feels a bit outdated to write this post now, but then I remembered that I couldn’t not share all of the photos of everything that I ate while I was in Seattle. It just seemed like the wrong thing to do. Even though I’m calling the Bay Area home now, Seattle is never that far away and I don’t take advantage of the short flight as much as I should. It can be challenging because I have times at work where I should be in the office and not on vacation, but luckily for me the summertime is not that time. And that time also happens to me when Seattle is the hottest and the brightest! I decided to go back for Father’s Day and a few days extra which ended up being the right amount.

Before I even landed in Seattle, I had one request and that was for Kevin to pick me up at the airport (okay a 2nd request) and take me straight to Wasabi Bistro. I didn’t get to go here when I was in town during the holidays and it was the only thing that I wanted because no offense – California can’t even match up to Seattle when it comes to sushi and seafood. We were all thinking it. Also, I had sushi three times when I was home, so there.

The Weekend: Last Weekend’s Seattle Trip

For the first time in a long time, I finally took a vacation! I was returning home for the wedding of my beautiful friend Natalie, but decided that a weekend just wasn’t enough so I tacked on a couple of extra days and tried to go off the grid from work. For someone who hasn’t really taken a true vacation (outside of company holidays) not checking email was extremely hard for me! I’m the only person on my team who gets a notification to my phone every time a new email comes into my inbox and it’s helpful in urgent cases, but causes me to have a sense of urgency 24/7. Having to ignore that on vacation was tough, but got easier as the long weekend went on. Here are just a few snaps from a very memorable return home.

Seattle greeted me with the most beautiful end of summer weather!

Every time I’m home, I find myself completely stretched for time and wanting to eat at all my favorite places and not enough home cooked meals as I would’ve wanted! I was supposed to catch up with a friend for happy hour at my favorite place in college – Cha Cha’s, but when I heard that he would be late, I made a very quick decision to sprint like 7 blocks down the hill to Taylor Shellfish for half a dozen oysters. That’s all I thought I would have time for! They must’ve thought I was crazy for running in and out of there and…by myself, but it was so worth it!

Yow Yow! Goes Back to Seattle!

I’m starting to think that no matter how often I go back to Seattle or how long I stay, it will never be enough. I took a trip back last weekend for the long holiday and those three days quickly escaped from me. While I saw most of the friends I wanted to see, I didn’t see all of them. I didn’t get to eat at all my favorite places or venture back to my old hometown. We did as much as we could though! However, it looks like some of the things that we didn’t get to do will just have to roll over into our next trip!

Pictured above: a view of the prettiest chandelier at The Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard. I absolutely love this little town and this was my first time stopping by this restaurant. It opens at 4 and you’ve got to be in line by the time it opens if you want to grab a seat without waiting. We got pretty lucky!

If there’s anything I could eat all summer long, it would be corn. On just about everything. Is it not the vegetable mascot of the season?! One of my favorite restaurants in Seattle – Oddfellows – served up this herbed ricotta ravioli with corn relish for meatless Monday today. I hope it’s still available when I get into town this weekend!

The Way Way Back Home

It’s a weird experience to be coming home for the first time. The city that you once had infinite time in is now limited and there’s a little bit of anxiety surrounding it because you want to do everything you can in that time fame, but you always want some time to yourself. There is really no happy medium. I now know what it’s like though to be on the side of it when my friends from out of town would visit and couldn’t see me every time they were here. I don’t think I have ever taken Seattle for granted, but this visit as well as my visit from Thanksgiving has made me appreciate so many of the little things that I once loved about my hometown.

Driving on I-5 into the city with traffic or no traffic is still one of the most peaceful and calming rides that I would choose to take any day especially when it comes to driving North on 280 to San Francisco. The Space Needle is still the prettiest overrated tourist spot in the city but the surrounding skyline is the absolute best. Capitol Hill is just as cool as I left it. The sushi in Seattle trumps the sushi in San Francisco any day.

It may not be “home” anymore, but it is still very much a part of my life and Yow Yow!

My first night wouldn’t have been complete without a meal from the Nordstrom Cafe with Ashley. Confused by what our meal should be, we opted for a child’s pasta and Creme Brulee. How adult of us. ^^

I’ve been really caught up in life in the Bay that I forgot that I would be returning to Seattle soon! I can’t wait to eat at all of my favorite restaurants again including Oddfellows on Capitol Hill. They just unveiled some of their new menu items and I’m itching to try their twist on the classic “avocado toast” (my favorite snack!) and their Golden Beet Salad. YUM. Get in me.

If there’s one thing that I have been missing the most about Seattle right now, it is definitely my most frequently visited restaurants back home. My fridge is pathetic and my weekend meals are just so sad haha I am not proud admitting this especially since I’ve been claiming that I am striving to be more of an adult. That’s not happening in the food department. Sometimes a girl just wants her Oddfellows and their gnocchi with roasted mushrooms, arugula, horseradish creme fraiche.

Despite me being settled into my new city for a week, I am nowhere near to being home sick one bit. Well, that was until I saw this Instagram post today from one of my favorite restaurants back on the hill in Seattle. Oddfellows is serving up a grilled ham’n cheese w/ Mama Lil’s peppers and tomato soup w/ a balsamic reduction.

YUM.

Friends back home, go and order this stat!

The Weekend: 5 Things

ferris wheel

With Alex in town from San Francisco and Lucia back from LA, it was a freshman reunion with the whole gang back together. I’m grateful that the friends I made in my first quarter of college at Seattle University are still the people that I love and enjoy being around! In addition to all of this going on, it was also Ashley’s last weekend so we had a total “Seattle Day” being tourists around the city before we gave her a proper send off to San Diego.

One year later, I FINALLY visited the Great Wheel. And it was awesome, as expected.
