Pantone Names Two Colors of the Year for 2021

It has been a tough 2020 so why not name two colors for the following year? Some may consider it an interesting combo, but “Illuminating” and “Ultimate Gray” compliment each other.

“Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power,” describes Pantone, adding that it fills people with optimistic promise of a sunshine-filled day. “Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation. The colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.”

“Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit,” describes Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

I love the rationale behind how these colors were selected. If I’m being honest, I didn’t always see the meaning in these types of decisions. Instead, I saw it as the color being selected and how this would drive future trends in fashion and design for the following year. Nothing beyond that. As we near the end of 2020, I hope they’re right! Hopefully these colors will inspire a better and stronger year for all of us.

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2020

Pantone announced earlier this month that “Classic Blue” would be their 2020 color of the year. If you’re wondering why this seems so familiar, it’s because it is often compared to royal blue or cobalt. It also reminds me of how I’ve seen this hue lately in weddings and travel destinations. As always, I’m looking forward to seeing how “classic blue” will be represented in collections this coming year.

Would y’all like to see an example? It looks like it already has started…

Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year

2018’s Color of the Year is “Ultra Violet” and I am totally into it. It reminds me of one of my favorite emoji’s – that very mysterious crystal ball. I also think that it reminds a lot of the universe or the galaxy, which takes me back to one of the subjects I truly loved in school – astronomy and anything having to do with space.

Every year that Pantone announces the color of the year though, I never really know what this means? Do fashion houses take note of this and create collections based on the color of the year? Do we magically start seeing it everywhere that we go? Because even though this past year’s color was “Greenery,” I’m very much convinced that it was millennial pink.

Also, what’s the science or thought process that goes into selecting the color of the year?

Whatever the case, I’ve always loved this shade and if it means that we’ll be seeing it in some of our summer weddings, then I do not have an issue with it.

Pantone’s Color of Spring 2014

Dazzling Blue is Pantone’s color of Spring 2014. I am already envisioning this on beautiful spring pieces – shift dresses, blouses, cropped pants, the list could go on. I’m amazed at how every year Pantone manages to set the trend with the color they select for the year and how it has a great impact on the fashion industry and their collections.

Introducing, Dazzling Blue, a peppy shade of cobalt that Pantone’s executive director noted was a practical shade women were already likely to own

As Fashion Week is just around the corner, we will soon be seeing if Dazzling Blue makes its debut on the runway!

How To Wear The 2013 Color Of The Year

I’ve always had a little bit of a crush for jewel tones and pastels. There’s definitely a little bit of an innocence thing going on with the pastels, but I love the regal-ness of jewel tones and how when I see a jewel tone on a piece, I instantly associate it with a strong willed and dynamic personality. I don’t know how these things come up; they just do. Emerald is the 2013 Pantone color of the year so to help y’all out with following the trend, here are a few of my favorite emerald colored pieces to get you started off.

Color of Spring ’13

Pantone has named Monaco Blue as the new color of Spring for 2013. Tangerine Tango was such a winner this year appearing in the fashion world all summer long and even at some of this season’s weddings. Of course, its time had to come to an end though and now we  wait and watch for this new hue to run the world.
