My Favorite Post of 2019

Technically, my favorite post is about another piece, but stick with me here. In previous years, I’ve gone through the year archive to pick out 10 posts that I’ve enjoyed writing. I’ve spent the last couple of days reading this piece by Topic Magazine – [The Only Woman in the Room: 17 Stories of Music Before the Internet Changed Everything] As we speak, I’m not done reading, but I knew it was going to be my favorite.

My stint in music was nearly a decade ago, but it was the best job I ever had. There’s a resounding theme in all of these stories. It can be challenging to be the only woman in the room in a sea of men in this industry, but if you persevere, it can be the most rewarding. I didn’t know what I was doing at age 16, but somehow I had the chance to take on a lot of responsibility. I was the marketer, the promoter, the booker, the manager and the merch girl all at once! Even though I left behind the idea of a career in music, it hasn’t stopped me from thinking about it often. I’m a believer that we can’t stick to one career our whole lives. Maybe we’ll have a second life, but maybe we’ll boomerang.

Articles like these are important. They give us historical knowledge into truly what music was like before the internet. Additionally, they inspire young woman who want to work in music, but don’t know how to get their foot in the door. This can be their road map and it’s so crucial to have this for nearly every type of path. Whether I change careers or not, this is an article that I’m going to return back to for years to come.

A Collection Part 55

It seems like these posts always get worked on when I have chunks of time to carve out for myself. They are the ones that I want to be the most thoughtful about. So if I’m stressed because of a deadline or under pressure, it’s not a good time. However, it’s moments like these where I do feel a bit of stress, but it’s these images that put me at ease. I read somewhere recently that when you have anxiety at work, there are a few things to remedy it. You can count or you can start listing things in a category. Anything that takes your mind off of what it is that causes you stress for a bit does the job. For me, it’s these types of images. They are the ones that spark whimsey, creativity, or a different perspective. What is it for you all that helps get you out of a rut like mine?

Lizzie McGuire’s Revival

In news that I thought would never happen, Hilary Duff is reprising her role as Disney Channel star Lizzie McGuire. Growing up as a pre-teen/teenager is hard enough, and Disney got that. It’s the reason why they created series like Lizzie McGuire, That’s so Raven and Even Stevens so that we could all realize that everything we felt was normal. Also, it was a reminder that your awkward moments will never come close to your worst moments.

In the sequel series return, the show will follow Lizzie as a 30-something living in New York City. Other than Hilary herself, there’s no word yet on who will be back except for the original showrunner. Terri Minsky is the woman behind the creation of the show and will share with us the story of Lizzie all grown up.

Hilary Duff announced the news officially today on her own personal Instagram account.

Relationships Over Time

Even though this is my first time seeing this visualization by Olivia de Recat, I think about relationships and their change over time often. It’s all made so clear to me in this one graphic. As I’m glazing over each one, I can pin point it to specific people in my life and agree with the way these have played out. Readers, do you agree with these or disagree? Since I’ve never had a dog, this is the only one that doesn’t resonate.

Make It With VSCO

I’ve been using VSCO since I first downloaded the Instagram app back in what I think was 2012. Almost immediately, I knew that Instagram’s filters were going to be too harsh for me. They consistently leaned to the extreme and spoiler alert: they still do today. VSCO felt cleaner in my eyes. I wanted my feed to feel like it was lightly edited and minimal. For that reason, it’s still what I have remained loyal to seven years later.

In their new campaign with AKQA, VSCO is highlighting three Gen Z creators on how they make their work. In short, the message is simple. Don’t stress over making the perfect piece; just make it anyways.

A Collection Part 54

For me, birthdays can act as complete shifts in your life. It was decided that this year, I wouldn’t celebrate the way I normally would and opt for smaller gatherings. The morning after last weekend’s wedding, my friends and I seemed to all decide that we were going to change our perspectives on how we had been “doing life.” In my day-to-day, my weekdays are now packed with activities every night while my weekends are seemingly quite open.

I know what you’re thinking. Isn’t it worse to go out and have a night of drinking during the work week? Yes, it’s completely irresponsible, but I don’t make the rules here! I will say, that it does feel great to wake up in the morning on the weekends without a hangover and with a complete and clear mind to tackle the day. It also means I can make it to my 11AM workout class without any regrets.

This moment right now is not in balance, but I have some high hopes that we’ll be able to get there. Eventually.
