Christmas Wish List 2013

I always end up making this list too close to Christmas so that by the time I list out things I could possibly want, it’s too late for my family to purchase them for me. Realistically, I don’t need any of these things for Christmas. They are merely just things that I can get for myself in the near future. We’ve actually been doing this Christmas List post for quite some time now so it wouldn’t have felt right if we didn’t have it again. I hope all of you have such a wonderful holiday. I’m off work for the week, but I’m really excited to be spending some time with Yow Yow! and prepping for our roundup posts that we do every year.

How We Eat: Birthday Week

Birthday week has always been pretty good to me, but I didn’t think I’d be eating this good! Yesterday evening,  (on a perfect sunny spring day) my family and I went out to Poppy at the end of Broadway on Capitol Hill. I’m someone who gets bored with my food easily so I love any opportunity where I get to try a bunch of little things for a meal. The black cod was delightful!

And as mentioned previously this morning, I was craving brunch. Though I didn’t get an omelette, I ended up with the Rainbow Rumble scramble full of corn, garlic, tomatoes, and mushrooms. You bet I topped this meal off with a mimosa. We were still celebrating my birthday after all. Kevin and I arrived at Coastal Kitchen at peak brunch time, but managed to park right in front, walk in, and find seating at the bar immediately without a wait. Things don’t really get any better than that.

Favorite Capitol Hill Restaurants of 2011!

This year, Capitol Hill was booming with new restaurants! I’ve sampled many of them throughout the year and in my time living in Capitol Hill, but there are still so many that I haven’t tried. It also doesn’t help that there will be a handful of new places opening this January. In this post, you’ll learn about both my new and old favorites! Keep in mind though that this is not a “best of” post. I am in no way claiming that these restaurants are the best in their category, but these are the ones that I enjoy and they’re the ones that I take my friends to. With that, let’s get started?

Favorite Fish & Chips: Pike Street Fish Fry

Pike Street Fish Fry has been across the street from my school for quite some time, but for some reason, I have always overlooked it. It’s probably cause I thought Neumos, Moe Bar, and Pike Street Fish Fry all merged into one and never gave it a second look. Over the summer, Lisa and I came up with this idea that we would have our lunch break at a different restaurant once a week. Now looking back on it, I think we only did this once and Pike Street Fish Fry was the only place we ever went to, but what a  great choice it was anyways! Fish and chips were a common staple for me growing up since I was obsessed with Ivars and Skippers, which means I’m pretty particular about eating it anywhere else. Pike Street Fish Fry is incredibly greasy, but deliciously greasy in the best way possible. That’s like a descriptive heart attack, but trust – if everyone else on the hill and on Yelp says it’s the place you need to try, then you just have to.

*Every third Friday, the restaurant offers free fresh cut frys from 5 – 7PM.

What I order: Catfish or Cod and chips

Summer in Seattle: Poppy

This series was a little hard to manage this summer, but I was talking about Seattle so often on Yow Yow! that I’m sure you all felt pretty informed. Since summer officially ends this week, this will be the last post in the Summer in Seattle series. Everyone one needs one friend that is an extreme foodie. For me, that friend is Samantha. Every time Samantha and I get together, we will treat ourselves to a fantastic meal out at one of our favorite restaurants in Seattle or a place that we’ve been dying to try. Samantha and I have this mutual agreement that we are willing to spend money on good food no matter what. Yes, we are your average poor college students, but we enjoy eating well. Is that so wrong? We put food first. If it’s between eating at a restaurant that is cheaper, but convenient and average in taste, Samantha and I will choose to go the distance for greatness. I think you get the point.

I have been itching to try Poppy for as long as I can remember (probably at least three years) after receiving a recommendation from a friend. Since it was a talked about Capitol Hill restaurant, I figured it would be the perfect place to dine at. We ate outside and sipped on summer cocktails with our meal. Aside from being a foodie, I’ve also got this slight problem with food. I get bored with it. I can’t stand large meals that are bigger than my face because after eight minutes I just get tired of eating it. My jaw gets tired (which I’m sure is just in my head,) I start swirling things around on my plate with my fork. I’ll ask for a to-go box for half my meal and finish it at home. I’m not a picky eater, but I need to have a variety. That’s why Poppy was perfect for me. At Poppy, you can order “thalis,” which are a number of small dishes (either seven or ten depending on your appetite) with six or nine little plates and one main course – usually meat or fish. The restaurant highlights seasonal ingredients as well as the best flavors in the Northwest. The menu also changes about every month so you’re able to try out a number of rotating dishes throughout the year. There’s even a dessert thali, which I cannot wait to try! Uh, can you even imagine?

When Samantha and I first looked over the menu, we were only able to recognize every other word on the page because we hadn’t heard of some of the ingredients. We each decided to choose different thalis so that we could try each others, but we were nervous of what we were getting ourselves into. We felt like we were on Top Chef trying all of the unique concoctions, but were shocked to find that in the end we loved EVERYTHING on our plates despite not knowing what most of the dishes were. It was a fun experience though and definitely not like anything we’ve ever had at any other restaurant in Seattle. I’m sure we’ll be retuning the next time we are reunited, but this time we’ll take a snapshot of our dessert thali for you!
