No, not the ones that are turning 16.
In 2003, before The Simple Life was introduced starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, MTV put out a series called Rich Girls documenting the lives of Ally Hilfiger (daughter of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger) and best friend Jaime Gleicher (too lazy to wikipedia her background right now.) I was 13 when the show came out, but I was hooked. I thought it was the best thing ever despite the judgments of my family who thought it was strange that high school seniors spent an entire day playing in a toy store dressed as princesses and witnessed two girls who essentially did not know how to take care of themselves. I had faith that they would make it through. They lived such lavish lives riding in limos almost everywhere and took random trips to Nantucket, Seattle, and London, but yet they always had these meltdowns. As a young teenager back then, I pretty much assumed that my life was headed down that path naturally too.
It didn’t. As a kid, you don’t know better and you look up to those that are older than you. Thank you Ally and Jaimie for painting an image of my final semester in high school that never looked like yours at all. In the end, I suppose it was kind of a good thing. Want to know what I’m looking forward to though? Re-watching your entire series on this YouTube channel as soon as I graduate from college.
