Bully

The difficult thing about being in school and maintaining Yow Yow! at the same time is that you can’t fall behind in either. Technically, I can fall behind with Yow Yow! and I generally do, but that means I forget about stuff I want to talk about or too much time has passed that it becomes irrelevant to bring up again. Earlier this week, I was catching bits and pieces about a news story in which a new documentary called Bully was stamped by the MPAA with an R-rating. The Weinstein Company attempted to appeal this for a PG-13 rating, but was denied due to the language that the children used in the film.

This was a controversial decision that most people aren’t happy with. The kids that should be seeing this movie are the ones doing the bullying and most of them are under 17 and won’t be able to because of this rating. Over 165,000 people have signed the petition, but is it enough?

I just watched the trailer myself and though it was only 2:21 minutes long, it was still enough to wrap me in. I remember after hearing the news about this movie earlier on this week and walking across my campus and thinking to myself about how bullying in college doesn’t really happen. I don’t see anyone throwing people’s stuff on the ground or name calling. And that has a lot to do with the maturity levels of college students and the fact that I go to the school that I do, but then I remembered that our “bullying” happens online because let’s just be honest about this here – when you’re a kid, you don’t know better so you’re not scared to become confrontational, but behind a computer screen, you’re in new territory. You can be anonymous. You don’t have to answer to anyone. You also don’t have to face a person’s reaction. In some of the recent social media pages created by Seattle University students – ie) Twitter accounts, Seattle U Memes, Likealittle there is a tinge of “bullying” present. Maybe you wouldn’t categorize it like that right away or maybe you believe it leans towards being more humorous, but if you look closely it’s there and catty. People are calling people out both subtly and obviously and if you’re doing it just to get a laugh then you should find some other outlet other than public humiliating someone.

Middle school and high school aren’t easy. You’re trying to figure out who you are, what you want in life, and who you want to surround yourself with. It’s an awkward stage and you don’t need anyone else trying to make it any harder for you. I have never consistently been bullied in my life, but I know what it’s like to be judged, to be teased, and to be called names for no reason at all – simply because I had different interests. What I’ve come to realize is that there are some people that don’t like different in this world. They don’t like change and as a result they try to keep things the same. Well, get off your high horse please and let people be themselves. I almost was about to type that it wasn’t justified or fair the behavior that I had towards me and that “it is what it is.” But then I realized I have a problem with that. In this trailer, the faculty of schools are disregarding the bullying behavior because they argue that “kids will be kids.” Oh really? If kids come home feeling this way or harming themselves, are you still going to say “kids will be kids?” These things weren’t significant enough to make me feel angst towards my high school years, but regardless you never forget it. As kids being bullied or teased, you will never forget those remarks or those people.

I just don’t see any reason for it. I think I’ve said enough, but I’m going to leave you with some last words from Miss Connie Wang who once gave this piece of advice,

“People who go out of their way to be snotty to you are tiny little people with tiny little brains so forget them…and don’t be a snot yourself.

Ben & Jerry’s “Taste the Lin-sanity” Controversy

In an attempt to coin their new flavor last week, Ben & Jerry’s released a new flavor called “Taste the Lin-Sanity” without a whole lot of thought as to how people might react to it. The original flavor was a vanilla frozen yogurt w/ lychee honey swirls and fortune cookie pieces. As you can imagine, the controversy started because of the fortune cookie pieces. All offensiveness aside, I actually would want to try that flavor because it sounds good, but Ben & Jerry’s realized their wrongdoing and quickly replaced the fortune cookie pieces with waffle cookies claiming that the fortune cookies got too soggy.

The creators still released an apology for the idea of even including fortune cookies anyways:

“We offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Lin-Sanity flavor,” they said in a statement.

2011 Sunset Junction Festival Cut – Lineup of Bands’ Prices Released

photo cred | Jonathan Leibson

A common misconception that I hear often is that the production behind a music festival is inexpensive. Or maybe people know that it is expensive, but they just don’t know how expensive it actually is. After being involved with aspects of this industry, I no longer have these unrealistic views of trying to reach for something that I can’t have. There is a whole lot of funding that goes into making an event or a music festival like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza etc. so successful, but many people take that for granted.

When that happens, music festivals die. San Diego’s Street Scene 2009 was one of the best festivals I’ve ever been to and unfortunately, the run of that festival ended that year. Last summer, Los Angeles’ Sunset Junction was denied a permit due to unpaid fees and as a result not only did the festival NOT happen, everyone who was set to be a part of the festival lost their money. This includes the festival’s acts, vendors, and ticket purchasers.

Court records released yesterday just how much these bands were supposed to earn from their performance. Click the cut to be enlightened:

Whitney Houston – Saving All My Love For You

The coroner has announced this morning that Houston’s cause of death was due to mixing prescription drugs, Xanax, and alcohol; not from drowning in the bathtub. This is so sad to hear. The music industry truly lost a legend this weekend.

Commentary: Grammys 2012

photo cred | Billboard via Getty Images
  • Did anyone see Bruno Mars’ silly tantrum backstage after Adele won for best pop vocalist?
  • Chris Brown. Quit your lip synching or gtfo the stage.
  • I don’t think I could ever get sick of The Foo Fighters.
  • I actually enjoyed Dave Grohl’s speech and appreciate him for voicing his opinion, but  it’s a shame they cut him off…
  • I could’ve sworn I saw a twinkle in Mark Foster’s eye when he was singing The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” My heart melted because it felt like he was just singing straight to me.
  • John Legend grooving to The Beach Boys was also quite adorable.
  • The Beach Boys are looking and sounding pretty great for their age! It feels like just yesterday I was watching them on that one episode of Full House.
  • Nope Chris Brown, we don’t have to forgive you. The Grammy’s can put you in our faces all they want, but I’m not budging.
  • Even though it wasn’t well received, I loved Taylor Swift’s dress during her performance of “Mean.” Now if I could only find out who the designer was…
  • Neil Patrick Harris is a babe.
  • I am still amazed by Katy Perry every time I hear anything about her and her music. Does anyone remember the poor review I gave her nearly two years ago? She’s grown as an artist definitely, but I’m not taking back anything I said. Her new song has potential for being the new girl anthem of 2012 though.
  • Adele SLAYED w/ her performance!
  • Bon Iver for Best New Artist – YAY! Great speech.
  • Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston: Flawless
  • Nicki Minaj’s performance is not as family-friendly as I thought it would be. It was downright terrifying.
  • Adele is also the loveliest human being ever.  What a doll! She totally deserved all of her awards tonight.
  • (and none for Lady Gaga – sad day)

*************************************************************************************************

On an important related note, this HelloGiggles post about why people shouldn’t be okay with Chris Brown performing at the Grammy’s is quite insightful. I’ve had a similar opinion for awhile, but usually when I talk about that I make jabs at his performance and the more obvious scandal. This writer, however, has got some pretty solid facts and it is worth reading. And not to start something controversial, but the reason why that HelloGiggles post is mentioned on Yow Yow is so we can avoid things like this. It’s important for all of us to remember that there’s a border between a play on words or a play off pop culture, but this is not one of those times. It’s not cute anymore especially when it involves Chris Brown. Typing things like this out as a tweet is not the same as feeling the same way or wanting to be in that situation. Not being able to tell the difference between these things frightens me and makes me fear for the safety of other young women that have this notion in their head that it is okay to say these things.

RIP Whitney

Iconic musician, Whitney Houston, has passed away at the age of 48. Houston has won a number of Grammy’s including for album and record of the year. Near the end of her musical career, Houston was defeated by her constant drug use and even recently as reported by Ohnotheydidnt.

As a child, I absolutely adored Whitney as a singer so despite the news surrounding her death, I would prefer to remember her for being an incredible and talented musician. Her classic hits include, “I Will Always Love You,”  and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” My personal favorites though are definitely, “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.” RIP Whitney.

The 8-year old Katie singing along to this song is weeping inside.

The Internet Schooled Lana Del Rey

When Dave Schilling wrote a parody post on Thought Catalog that was supposed to be from Lana Del Rey’s perspective, entitled “Lana Del Rey Responds to Critics,” her publicity team was less than thrilled. They demanded that the post be taken down because some believed that Lana Del Rey herself actually wrote it.

Oh bummer.

Well, the most wonderful thing about the internet is that things can be shared. Dave Schilling removed the post from Thought Catalog, but sent it over to Hipster Runoff to be posted there instead.

Sundance Spotlight: West of Memphis

The first time I had heard about this documentary was through Kevin a couple months ago, but even at that time I had no idea what this story was really about. Produced by Peter Jackson (YEP THE Peter Jackson,) and Fran Walsh, the two decided to dig deeper into an investigation that put three innocent men behind bars for the murder of three young boys back in 1993. This documentary re-tells the story of how this came to be and how new evidence and  new witnesses are coming forward in an attempt to put the actual killer behind bars.

It is a truly a remarkable story. I can’t wait to read the reviews on it and watch the documentary myself.

Lana Del Rey Opens Her Mouth

photo cred | Karim Sadli

When Lana Del Rey took to the Saturday Night Live stage last week for her performance debut, the world had high hopes. Unfortunately, those hopes got shattered real quick. The performance was uncomfortable. The critics were ruthless. I felt so bad for the poor girl! I started giving her the benefit of the doubt though – because there weren’t too many people on her side after that. Maybe that’s just how she performs! She does he own thing, you know? I thought if I left it at that, then there would be no reason for any other explanation.

Well to address the criticism, Lana Del Rey hit back with comments that I wish she just wouldn’t.

  • “I think like, the people who have been listening to my music for a little while know that I’m more of a writer and, like, a studio singer. So I think if you come to the show, you just come to hear the songs on the record that you might like.”
  • “Sometimes I feel less nervous than other times. I don’t love live television. The only tip I have is just pray and just hope that things work out.”
  • “You can’t expect too much from my show.”

This raises some concerns with me.

Don’t like live television? Why go on a show known for their live performances? I’m not even sure if I have ever heard a band or a musician say basically that they would rather be heard on a record and not known for being a performer. Bands and musicians LOVE performances. They live for it. It’s the performance that help bring that music from the record to life – it gives fans the opportunity to become a part of a unique one-of-a-kind experience.

Miss Lana Del Rey, your performance on Saturday Night Live is not something that I have an issue with, but I do have a problem with your statements. I read this morning that you will begin a new tour in 2012 that includes 15 cities and a venue capacity of 900. May I suggest to you that instead of actually performing at these venues, that you save yourself the trouble and bring out a big ‘ol record player out on stage with you to play your new record to those 900 people. I mean, you didn’t want them to expect much, right?

We Spoke. They Heard.

For years, I believed that my voice and the voice of my generation didn’t really matter. No matter what we did, change was not in our favor. Yesterday, I was blown away by the support and the strength against SOPA/PIPA. It felt good to be able to stand by Yow Yow! and take those seconds to quickly write that email to Congress.

For everyone that participated yesterday in the blackout, for everyone that voiced their opinions on the matter – you were heard.

Here is the breakdown of what we accomplished in just 24 hours.

Photographs of Soldiers Before, During, and After Afghanistan

photo cred | Lalage Snow

Photographer Lalage Snow photographed and interviewed members of 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland before they were sent to Afghanistan, after three months’ service, and days after they returned home. Their faces show the toll that fighting in Afghanistan takes on our troops.

There is something so haunting about these photographs. As I was scrolling through them, I had a hard time describing what I was exactly feeling, but if I could describe it in one word – it would be piercing. The interviews following the photographs are also just has difficult to read. I still thought that it was a piece worth sharing though.

The Silence of Being Blacked Out

On my end, the news front has been awfully quiet today! Although we are having a school-wide snow day, I strangely have not been using this time to blog and that’s actually been extremely nice. Two of the blogs I read on a daily basis – Ohnotheydidnt and Gawker are completely blacked out as well as the front page of WordPress. From 5AM-5PM today, Yow Yow! was also under a complete blackout opposing SOPA. Those that were unaware of what was going on and attempted to use Wikipedia were not quiet at all. You can see their responses here. That’s just what happens when you aren’t informed. Sucks, doesn’t it? Can you imagine how people will respond if SOPA and PIPA actually pass and others have not heard a thing about it?

Mayhem.

My hope is that all of you have at least taken some time to enlighten yourselves on what is going on – and what is at stake. It’s your freedom to create and to express on the line here. And if you are OK with giving that up, then please – feel free to go ahead and call the Congress offering them your support.

If you don’t agree with SOPA and PIPA, please take the time to sign the petition. It took me two seconds.

If you still are not sure what is going on, and don’t worry I won’t judge you for it…(that much) then let me simplify the situation for you with this gif from The Oatmeal. It’s got animals, Oprah, and Jesus. How can you say no? Continue to stay informed, please.

Protest SOPA This Wednesday

By now, I’m hoping many of you have heard about what SOPA is and how it can affect you. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is on the verge of becoming a federal legislation and if the Senate decides to pass it, the way we use our internet will be greatly restricted. If you have not heard about SOPA and have been living under a  rock, then please – I urge you to inform yourself – like right this second. I’ll even give you this video here that is a little over 4 minutes long, but will give you the gist of what is going down.

To break it down for you simply, the act claims that if you have anything on your blog, site, Facebook page etc. that you did not create yourself whether it is a song, a video, an image – the government has every right to shut you down for good. Basically, the existence of Yow Yow! would be no more. I don’t want that. I’m hoping that you don’t want that either because this doesn’t just affect Yow Yow! It affects every single website on the internet. The most wonderful thing about the internet or social media in general is the ability to share. I strongly believe that sourcing should be enough and while I know that wasn’t a priority for me early on because I simply didn’t know the “rules” of blogging, it most certainly is now.

Take a second to think of all the outlets you may use: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest, Soundcloud, Instagram…

If you mess up by posting a funny picture on someone else’s wall that you found somewhere else, or used a song for the backdrop of your video for a class project, you could potentially get your favorite websites (listed above) shut down forever. You may think that I’m over-exaggerating because that sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Well, I’m not; that’s SOPA for you.

On Wednesday, Wikipedia will participate in the blackout along with many other websites to protest SOPA. What that means for you? Finish your research project for class tonight.

I have not decided yet whether or not Yow Yow! will be joining the protest, but I’m sure you’ll have your answer by tomorrow morning.

2011′s Most Powerful Photographs

“A girl in isolation for radiation screening looks at her dog through a window in Nihonmatsu, Japan on March 14.”

(Reuters / Yuriko Nakao)

Can you believe that another year has come and gone? Round up posts are some of my favorites during this time and BuzzFeed has gotten an early start by posting the 45 Most Powerful Photos of 2011. In the post, you’ll find some of the ones you expected – that couple making out on the ground in Vancouver during the riots, that one cop that pepper sprayed protesters at UC Davis and got turned into an internet meme, and the aftermath of the Japanese coast tsunami. You’ll also find a series of photos that you may not have seen before, but still relevant to our year. These images are incredibly powerful and every year reminds me of how little I know about the world.
