Outside KEXP

My dad and I were quite ambitious with our Seattle day over the summer and thought we would try and tackle a double header of visiting the Chihuly Museum, but also taking a tour of KEXP. It turns out… that we missed the KEXP tour, but I was still just as excited to see the new building even if it meant we didn’t get to go fully inside it. This mural outside of the building is also pretty neat. I’m really looking forward to doing the actual tour on my next visit though so that we can share it here! Also for those of you who don’t know, KEXP is a radio station in Seattle and we’ve actually blogged about them our fair share on Yow Yow typically for their concert series and for their in-studio live sessions.

Seattle’s Summer

screen-shot-2017-01-06-at-9-41-04-pm

Whenever I return home, I never feel like I have enough time. In a perfect world, I would spend every summer in Seattle and then elsewhere for the other seasons! I spent a week this past June like I always do and we’re now sharing some of the photos from our trip. If some of these look familiar to you (because you’ve seen these shots before) it’s because I basically will do the same kind of thing on every trip. We know what we like, obviously! Now if only we could get back there more often…

^^ I will tolerate sushi in the Bay Area, but we all know that it doesn’t exactly compare to Seattle. And even though my go-to place looks like a club inside, the food is 100. This is at Wasabi on 2nd Ave!

Chihuly Garden and Glass

screen-shot-2017-01-05-at-3-36-28-pm

It took me four years to finally visit the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum. It’s one of the most touristy things I could have done in my hometown and we took a bunch of photos that have all been done before, but I didn’t really care. While I was visiting home this past summer, I took my dad on a special Daddy-Daughter date and the anticipation and hype were HIGH. I was pleasantly surprised that my dad enjoyed it just as much as I did and even got a kick when HE was trying to advise me on how to take better photos.

My sentiments are that the place is beautiful. The sculptures are incredible pieces of art and you get a whole venue full of them as opposed to when you visit random places throughout the country and only get to view one. If you have an interest to go visit the museum, you should do it. If your interest is 5/10, just look at the tagged photos on Instagram to get the same experience. The tickets are kind of pricey as museums go and because my dad is still a WA state citizen he got a discount. I didn’t. -_-

Not to get all mushy gushy, but the best part of this was actually doing this with my dad! Many of you may not know this, but my dad is an artist too so this is something that we really appreciated doing together. I’m looking forward to our next outing together where I drag him along to a KEXP radio station tour the next time I’m home!

It’s a 3-day long festival featuring 200 world-class bears from 16 different countries. For all of the details that you’ll need, click here.

2011 Bumbershoot Recap

Well, I’m officially the last person to write a Bumbershoot recap/review post, but here it is! Better late than never, right? I had so much fun at this year’s 2011 Bumbershoot music festival at Seattle Center. After skipping it last year, I felt right at home returning to the music fest I  grew up loving. Thank you to everyone at One Reel for putting all of their hard work into making this year’s festival one great event.

Bands I saw:

Saturday:

  • Campfire OK
  • Craft Spells
  • Champagne Champagne
  • Natasha Kmeto
  • Emancipator
  • Pickwick
  • Little Dragon
  • STRFKR
  • Minus the Bear

Sunday

  • Mad Rad
  • Broken Social Scene
  • Tennis
  • Warpaint
  • Macklemore
  • Toro y Moi
  • The Kills

Monday

  • Head Like a Kite
  • Big Boi
  • Lemolo
  • Charles Bradley
  • Sharon Van Etten
  • Phantogram

Oh yes, it was a long and exhausting weekend, but I would do it all over again. While there were many incredible acts every day of the festival, I think my favorite would have to be Saturday. I was extremely proud of coffeehaus alums – Campfire OK and Champagne Champagne who just gave it their all on stage that day. Below are my reviews for my top six acts from last weekend:

Campfire OK

There was no better way to kick off my Bumbershoot weekend than with a set by local band Campfire OK. At noon, I found myself front row at the Fountain Lawn Stage bracing myself for the high-energy packed performance that the band is notorious for putting on. Campfire OK is a band with an immense amount of passion, talent and potential for growth. I don’t know about most people, but it is a rare sight to catch me dancing at noon. Only a band like Campfire OK can make me do something that crazy, but it turns out I wasn’t the only one this weekend, because everyone around me was groovin’ along to their songs. Campfire OK’s lasting impression on me came from the fact that the band enjoyed performing for us as much as I enjoyed watching them. If the crowd was dancing, the band members on stage were dancing much harder. Lead singer Mychal pounced on the keys of his piano in a manner of organized chaos while the lovely Melodie Knight engaged the crowd in hand claps. Anytime I heard a solo coming from the band’s magnificent trumpet player, I, along with everyone else, was instantly mesmerized. Believe me when I say that this is only the beginning for Campfire OK, because I am predicting great things for their future, including an upcoming album!

Out on the Town: This Weekend

I cannot believe how many wonderful things are going on this weekend! If you don’t have plans yet, start making them!

First off, I am extremely jealous of everyone )including my BFF Max) attending Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco this weekend. What an amazing lineup! I really wish YouTube would’ve struck a deal with the festival organizers for this one so that I could stream the sets live again like I did for Lollapalooza. The Shins, Ellie Goulding, The Black Keys, Beirut, Grouplove…I have to stop now before I make myself even more jealous.

Over here in the Northwest, we’ve also got our own music festival going on across the water this weekend as well. Doe Bay Fest has garnered a ton of buzz these past few months and it is well deserved. I mean…have you SEEN the lineup? It doesn’t matter if you did or didn’t, but you should know that tickets for the music festival sold out even before the lineup was released at all! That’s saying something. Before I leave Seattle, this will be one of the last things I do.

If you’re trying to stay a little closer to Seattle this weekend, then I suggest you snag tickets for you and your friends for the SAM Remix going on tomorrow. Northern Departure, Daydream Vacation, and my new favorite band Craft Spells will be performing too! It’s a very music-oriented weekend, people. Along with the music performances, SAM Remix, which will be down at the Olympic Sculpture Park tomorrow, will also be hosting an outdoor movie screening of Grease, having activities, and on-site artists. Learn more about the event and purchase your ticket here.

The 2nd Annual 12th Ave Festival will be returning to Capitol Hill once again this Sunday, which will run from Noon-6PM. The cost to attend is free, but there will be food available to purchase (all under $5) from some of my favorite Capitol Hill restaurants including Cafe Presse, Poquitos, Cupcake Royale, and many many more.

Century Ballroom in Capitol Hill will be debuting their first flea market on Saturday, which will be a part of their new year-round flea market schedule. I wish I could give you more information on it, but since it’s the very first one, I don’t have much to say yet. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to check it out though so make sure you stop by for some treasured goods! I’m totally diggin’ on the idea of Capitol Hill jumping on the flea market band wagon though.

Last, but not least, Seapony, Gold Leaves, and Math and Physics Club will be performing tomorrow as part of the KEXP Seattle Center Concerts at the Mural series. These weekly shows at the mural are free and from what I’ve heard, ton of fun! Doors are at 5; bands play at 6.
