Hellcats

Tonight is the premiere of the new CW television series Hellcats starring Aly Michalka and Ashley Tisdale. The show is about the drama that come along with being a part of a competitive cheerleading squad at the college level. It’s actually based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders written by The Frisky writer Kate Torgovnick.

Synopsis that I jacked from Wikipedia:

Hellcats revolves around Marti, a pre-law college student at Lancer College in Memphis, Tennessee who comes from the wrong side of the town. When budget cutbacks and her mother’s constant carelessness cause her to lose her scholarship, she looks for a new scholarship. She overhears that one of the cheerleaders has become injured and a place on the team is available. She hates cheerleading but upon hearing that the new member would get a scholarship she uses her dancing skills from high school to try out. Seeing no other option, Marti fights for a spot on the Hellcats the legendary cheer squad in Lancer and opt for the Scholarship that comes with it.

The girls are covering the new issue of Seventeen Magazine and though I am not a fan – I still really like the photos from this shoot.

Seventeen Magazine just got schooled by Tavi

See anything wrong with the June/July 2010 cover of Seventeen Magazine? I didn’t at first. The 13 or 14 year old blogger of Style Rookie, Tavi Gevinson, however,  has just written an open letter to Seventeen Magazine slamming them for their bottom right corner headline: The Party Drug That Can Make You Fat & Ugly.

In the letter, Tavi questions the magazine’s threat to appearance when the main issue should be the damage to your health and body from party drugs.

“By trying to discourage the use of drugs with the threats that it will make someone fat and ugly,” she wrote, “you’re saying the worst thing that can happen to your average reader, a teenage girl, as a result of drug use, is not that she will have any damage done to her brain or become unhappy, but that her appearance will suffer.”

The girl has got a point. Tavi | 1 Seventeen Magazine | 0

I’m interested to see how Seventeen Magazine will respond to that.
