Apple’s New Campus is Extravagant

This aerial tour of Apple’s new campus in Cupertino is kind of crazy. I knew it was going to be massive, but I didn’t know just how large and dominating it would be. The video (shot on a drone) by Matthew Roberts shows the work and progress that has been done up until pretty much today, but there’s still a lot left to finish before employees begin to move into the space in early 2017. I’ve actually driven by parts of this every now and then since this is in my backyard, and sometimes it’s a little overwhelming. I realize I work in tech and some of these things should still feel normal to me, but after three years, some parts of are a lot to take in.

I actually can’t wait to see all the articles that will be on this space after its completion.

The Cast of Silicon Valley Explains What Real Startups Do

My friend Kurt and I are the only two people from our small hometown in Washington from our graduating class working in Silicon Valley. What that means is that a lot of people like to ask me what it’s like to work in it and they often go straight to the HBO show “Silicon Valley.”  – “It’s like that, right? It’s totally like that, I bet.” Umm… no. But I’ll let you think that if you want! I kind of enjoyed this video by Wired of the cast of Silicon Valley guessing what startups do based on their name and it’s pretty ridiculous and NSFW (language wise) so if you’re watching this at work, I hope you have headphones!

Silicon Valley: Season 1 Trailer

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69V__a49xtw#t=89]

The show looks to be comical, but will it be an accurate representation of Silicon Valley itself? I was talking to a co-worker yesterday about the trailer before watching it myself and she had a few thoughts to say on it. Actually, she was a little bit peeved about it because as a female software engineer in the industry and working in Silicon Valley, there was no representation of that in trailer and we’re both pretty sure that women like herself won’t be highlighted in the HBO series either. Instead, women in the show will be portrayed as they were in maybe say… The Social Network… a little bit slutty instead of as strong and intelligent engineers that they are or that you might find in SV. I think Silicon Valley will do well. It’s on HBO after all and sure, people will watch because those who aren’t living and working in this area will be more than a little bit curious. However, what you see isn’t my life. It’s not even the life that my co-workers even lead, but it’s entertaining that everyone will think so I suppose.

HBO’s “Silicon Valley” Teaser

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hteD4OrSf4#t=30]

30 seconds really wasn’t enough time for me to make my mind up about this show, but because of its title, I’ll probably watch it anyways. I was (embarrassingly) hooked on Start-Ups: Silicon Valley, but HBO does television differently than Bravo so I feel like the quality factor on this one will be much higher. I’m super interested to see also if it will be an accurate depiction, but what do I know – I’ve only been here for 5 months.

The Benefits That Feed

tumblr_krvgfjq1C71qzbboco1_400

It wasn’t long ago that we accepted a great benefits package as being one that included healthcare, vision, dental, PTO, and holidays. In fact, having those benefits at all (especially for a new college grad) was something to be proud of. When I talk to my parents now about what kinds of unique benefits are being offered, they are floored. I once visited a company that offered more than just the standard and they were benefits that were not just on paper – ones that you could see right before you. As I stepped into the office, I was taken into the cafeteria where chefs were the masters behind the kitchen offering employees breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All around me, employees got from point A to point B on scooters and skateboards. In front of me was a music room filled with instruments that doubled up as a karaoke room and behind me? A fully stocked bar.

Our idea of “benefits” these days are changing and they are being implemented heavily in the Bay Area and New York City. Seattle, will you catch up? One of my favorite interviewees, Molly Young, recently wrote a piece for the Times on how food is such a huge selling point for companies these days on the East. Not only does it make employees extremely happy, but it allows them to be productive as well! Of course, not all companies will be in a position to offer this sort of thing, however, more companies should consider making their employees feel more appreciated and valued. One way of doing this is to help them advance their careers. Whilst this seems simple, it can be difficult to get a good performance review from an interview. That’s why some companies are starting to use 360 Degree Feedback software from Qualtrics to gather performance reviews from managers and peers to see where they think each member of staff is at. Whilst this may not seem like a benefit, it can help people to grow their careers and personal skills to find a good job. That sort of feedback should be an employee benefit.
