At work we have this really great tradition that we call a “Vacation Tax Table.” Whenever employees go away for a trip, they are “required” to bring back a treat or some goodies to share with the rest of the employees. We’re starting to get much bigger as a company so it’s hard to bring back enough for everyone to have a taste of something, but it’s also challenging to make sure everyone knows that it’s still a tradition! I just went away to San Diego last weekend and completely forgot to bring something back.

Last month, a co-worker of mine traveled to Wisconsin and Colorado and brought back some locally sourced bacon jam that I became OBSESSED with. Left out on the table with slices of toasted bread and crackers, I placed myself directly in front of the food and munched for a straight hour. It was too good, I couldn’t leave! I don’t remember the brand that made it, but if I did, I would have it specially delivered to me… forever. Seattle’s Skillet makes a very well known bacon jam as well so I’m headed home next month to give it a try to see how it compares! Hopefully it’s just as good and if it is…well then it will be much easier to obtain when I need it!

Top Posts of the Week

With the nice weather out in Seattle, I have been spending less time on  the computer and more time outside and with great company! Obviously by doing that, I have gotten behind on posts for the week. Apologies. Instead of making an individual post for each, we’re doing a roundup and playing catch up!

Is Ballard Becoming The Next Capitol Hill?

photo cred | Daily UW

It was just recently that we learned that Capitol Hill’s Skillet Diner would be making the move to Ballard this summer season and now two more Capitol Hill establishments are moving in! Burger shop Li’l Woody’s and our favorite Molly Moon’s are expanding their shops to the lovely neighborhood of Ballard. I’m quite fond of Capitol Hill, naturally, after living their for four years and while I can sometimes feel very prideful over my neighborhood, I think the expansion will make all parties involved pretty happy! My logic is this. I am love with Seattle. Capitol Hill and Ballard are both neighborhoods in Seattle. Why not share the love?

I’ve never eaten at Li’l Woody’s, but I’ve heard great things. If this makes it easier for Seattle locals to enjoy their favorite places a little bit closer to them then I’m all for it. I adore Ballard, actually. It’s such a charming neighborhood and the one time I spent a night out there with Jennie, Ashley, and Henry, I only remember great memories.

News About Seattle’s Hot Spots

photo cred | Daily Candy

Capitol Hill’s beloved Skillet Diner is making moves! Don’t worry; they’re only expanding. Ballard will soon be getting their own Skillet Diner as well and it will look a lot like the one on the corner of Union. The restaurant is expected to open this summer at 2034 NW 56th Street, near the Ballard library branch and it will feature a larger space, big open windows just like Capitol Hill’s and a few menu choices specifically created for the Ballard menu. There’s also a rumor of a pretty “sweet patio” – we all know how much Seattleites love that.

Additionally, it looks like Broadway’s Garage (another favorite spot) is due for an upgrade! They too, have also been discussing the possibilities of a patio and to be honest, that’s going to be pretty spectacular to see especially when the new streetcar is finished and running. The patio will include a new bar and will be open year-round because it’s Seattle and the rain doesn’t keep us down, okay?

Skillet Diner’s Daily Scramble

The daily scramble was basically my regular at Skillet Diner when I lived up in Capitol Hill last summer and this restaurant was my spot for weekend brunches or breakfast for dinners. Every day, the cooks at Skillet whip up a new scramble combination, which I guess adds to the element of surprise, but I still have my favorite – arugula and corn!

Favorite Capitol Hill Restaurants of 2011!

This year, Capitol Hill was booming with new restaurants! I’ve sampled many of them throughout the year and in my time living in Capitol Hill, but there are still so many that I haven’t tried. It also doesn’t help that there will be a handful of new places opening this January. In this post, you’ll learn about both my new and old favorites! Keep in mind though that this is not a “best of” post. I am in no way claiming that these restaurants are the best in their category, but these are the ones that I enjoy and they’re the ones that I take my friends to. With that, let’s get started?

Favorite Fish & Chips: Pike Street Fish Fry

Pike Street Fish Fry has been across the street from my school for quite some time, but for some reason, I have always overlooked it. It’s probably cause I thought Neumos, Moe Bar, and Pike Street Fish Fry all merged into one and never gave it a second look. Over the summer, Lisa and I came up with this idea that we would have our lunch break at a different restaurant once a week. Now looking back on it, I think we only did this once and Pike Street Fish Fry was the only place we ever went to, but what a  great choice it was anyways! Fish and chips were a common staple for me growing up since I was obsessed with Ivars and Skippers, which means I’m pretty particular about eating it anywhere else. Pike Street Fish Fry is incredibly greasy, but deliciously greasy in the best way possible. That’s like a descriptive heart attack, but trust – if everyone else on the hill and on Yelp says it’s the place you need to try, then you just have to.

*Every third Friday, the restaurant offers free fresh cut frys from 5 – 7PM.

What I order: Catfish or Cod and chips
