Remembering Television in 2011…

As some of you may have noticed, there wasn’t so much postage going on this past weekend. The reason for that is because I was recovering, but I also came across a post on Ohnotheydidnt about the television shows that ended this year. One of them – near and dear to my heart – was Greek. After reading that post, the only sensible thing to do was watch an entire marathon of the show starting from episode one throughout the whole weekend. So I didn’t write anything for Yow Yow, but I became reacquainted with a show I once loved and can still relive through NetFlix – thank goodness. It was a weekend well spent.

And now, here’s your second end of the year recap post of shows that I will personally miss.

Greek: July 9, 2007 – March 7, 2011

I was deprived as a college student from the Greek system and the only way for me to feel like I was not missing out on anything was to live vicariously through Casey Cartwright. This show is extremely special to me for reasons I can’t explain. These kids barely did any school work and their entire lives revolved around the Greek system social calendar. Naturally, I was envious. The show has taught me a lot about love and friendship and karmic synergy, but they all couldn’t stay in college forever. At some point, every one of them needed to graduate and it was at that point that I had to let them.

Song of the Day

Lifehouse – Everything

You would think that for the first day of school, I would’ve chosen a song that was more upbeat, but…this isn’t my first day so…deal with it. [insert internet meme here]

In the last moments of watching Ringer last night, this song played in the background and for a second I experienced a little bit of deja vu. Where have I heard this song before? Why haven’t I listened to it in forever? The first time I heard it happened to be on another CW television show – that’s right – Smallville. The network is recycling songs, but great ones. In last night’s particular situation, the scene was highlighting Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character comforting her roofied stepdaughter after having a flashback to when her own twin sister (also played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) left her stranded and alone in a bar. I think I prefer the song in Smallville when Clark is the lonely neighbor boy lusting after Lana, but that’s just me.

Up until 3:35, this song would make a pretty great first dance song at a wedding, wouldn’t it? I’ve got weddings on my mind since my dear friend is getting married this weekend and I’m taking Cyril to his first wedding ever. He bought his first suit from Hugo Boss yesterday and I’m a little nervous that he’s going to look better than me. Must. Not. Let. That. Happen.

Why Watch The OC?

Every time I come home for a weekend or for break, my OnDemand channel always let me catch up on older episodes of The OC. As I was watching two eps. from the second season today while eating breakfast, I started to wonder why The OC was so successful. I loved the show. Many people enjoyed it, but why was this show any different? Why is The OC more recognized than One Tree Hill or Smallville? These are the reasons I have come up with:

– The show was well liked by both males and females

– The show produced GREAT music. Indie rock at its best.

– You liked all of the main characters (Ryan, Marissa, Seth, and Summer)

Newport Harbor High was way better than your highschool ever was

– It introduced new vocabulary to your every day life like Christmakah, stealth, brooding, etc. We all know that you never used to say that until The OC came along!

Death Cab For Cutie performed on an episode

– It brought to light a new kind of humor

– They always rotated new characters in to create more excitement, but when you got tired of them, their exit timing was appropriate.

– They dressed well!

– You always knew in the end the Summer and Seth would end up together and Ryan and Marissa …sort of

The OC lasted four strong seasons – well maybe 3 cause Marissa died.

– Catchy theme song – Phantom Planet’s California

The OC launched the careers of all of the actors and actresses

The OC really stands for “THE Orange County,” making it sound 10x more epic
