Yow Yow’s Yearly Recap

4 years. Can you believe it? It’s surreal to me that I’ve kept Yow Yow! going for this long, but at the same time having Yow Yow! is also kind of like my very own personal diary. It’s kind of cool! I get to look back on some bad writing, some bad photos (or photos that are no longer photos) and some really embarrassing moments in history.

At the same time, I’ve also had the opportunity to witness AMAZING things in history. This year, Yow Yow! didn’t change much, but I did. I graduated from college y’all! As a small child, that day seems so far away – light years away! I’ve got my degree. I found myself a big girl job. I fled from Seattle – never thought that would happen either, but it had to someday. 2012 was good to me and 2013 (I hope) will be even better for us – me and Yow Yow!

So let’s get to the numbers, shall we?

Stats from 2011 will be on the right and italicized while stats from 2012 will be left and bold.

750,119 total visits to Yow Yow! – – – – – – – – – – –  1,128,873+ (since the day isn’t over yet and this does not include up until New Year’s Eve) total visits to Yow Yow!

*In just 2012, there were 377,996+ visits to Yow Yow!

Protest SOPA This Wednesday

By now, I’m hoping many of you have heard about what SOPA is and how it can affect you. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is on the verge of becoming a federal legislation and if the Senate decides to pass it, the way we use our internet will be greatly restricted. If you have not heard about SOPA and have been living under a  rock, then please – I urge you to inform yourself – like right this second. I’ll even give you this video here that is a little over 4 minutes long, but will give you the gist of what is going down.

To break it down for you simply, the act claims that if you have anything on your blog, site, Facebook page etc. that you did not create yourself whether it is a song, a video, an image – the government has every right to shut you down for good. Basically, the existence of Yow Yow! would be no more. I don’t want that. I’m hoping that you don’t want that either because this doesn’t just affect Yow Yow! It affects every single website on the internet. The most wonderful thing about the internet or social media in general is the ability to share. I strongly believe that sourcing should be enough and while I know that wasn’t a priority for me early on because I simply didn’t know the “rules” of blogging, it most certainly is now.

Take a second to think of all the outlets you may use: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest, Soundcloud, Instagram…

If you mess up by posting a funny picture on someone else’s wall that you found somewhere else, or used a song for the backdrop of your video for a class project, you could potentially get your favorite websites (listed above) shut down forever. You may think that I’m over-exaggerating because that sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Well, I’m not; that’s SOPA for you.

On Wednesday, Wikipedia will participate in the blackout along with many other websites to protest SOPA. What that means for you? Finish your research project for class tonight.

I have not decided yet whether or not Yow Yow! will be joining the protest, but I’m sure you’ll have your answer by tomorrow morning.

Inform Yourself: SOPA

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/31100268]

Do you know what the “Stop Online Piracy Act” means? Not many people do. Until yesterday, I wasn’t aware of how it would directly affect me. It will restrict some of my favorite sites that I check out on a daily basis like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And if I accidentally post an image that is copyrighted on Yow Yow! or my Facebook, I could face a lawsuit. I can’t explain SOPA better than The Gawker can though so please please take the time to read all about it here and just stay informed because this affects all of us.
