The Starbucks Trenta Is Real…And It’s Coming

It was over a year ago (Jan 11, 2011) when we learned that Starbucks would be introducing their new “Trenta” – a cup that holds 31 fluid ounces. Trenta was supposed to be hitting stores May 3, 2011 but Seattle locations never saw it. I assumed that maybe the corporation was just not going forward with the idea, but it turns out the cup was released in just a few states at first. Come March 6th – the Trenta is ours here in Seattle! Get ready to have your favorite cold drink fill a cup that holds more liquid than the average human stomach. I guess that means you’ll have to plan your bathroom trips accordingly…

I can’t wait to take a picture of this cup next to my head…bout to be ridiculous.

Starbucks Shop Made of Recycled Shipping Containers

photo cred | inhabitat

In Seattle, you will never run into the problem of not being able to find a Starbucks. It’s everywhere just like it is in every other city! Even when you’re not in Seattle, you can’t escape the coffee shop because they have branded themselves so well that even before you become a coffee drinker you already know everything about the company or at least the most important facts anyways. What I love about Starbucks is that they never stop surprising their customers and are continually taking their appearances to the next level. The newer logo is a little bit on the minimalistic side, sure, but in the Capitol Hill neighborhood the aesthetic of the shops differ from each other pretty drastically.

The Starbucks shop across the street from Seattle University recently went through a makeover in the last year or two and has adopted a more industrialized feel. For some time, one Starbucks shop was a shop in disguise with the same menu items under a different name instead of Starbucks. Another Starbucks location on the hill serves wine! It’s a little different, but that is what sets them apart from everyone else.

Now, if you find yourself in Tukwila, Washington, you must stop by the newest Starbucks location constructed entirely out of four recycled shipping containers. Not only is it resourceful and up to LEED green building standards, but check out those angles! I am digging the sharpness of it.

Check out more pictures and how this design came about here.

Purchase: Water Bottle

My “green-conscious” friends are going to hate for me this post, but I finally purchased my very own water bottle! For the past few weeks, I’ve been getting the h2o at Starbucks out of a plastic cup to bring to school mostly because of convenience, but this morning I decided that enough was enough. The people at Starbucks must think I am crazy and I am just being lazy by not bringing my own water so I purchased a Camelbak Groove .6L in seafoam green! I’d say that I’m really excited to try it out, but I’m not sure how much more exciting this could  be.

Timeline of Logos

Stock Logos created an interesting timeline of logos relevant to our culture today that highlight the past, present and future. I would hope that Starbucks’ logo will be more than just a green blob in 2041, but at the rate they’re going at you just never know.

Check out some other popular logos and their timelines here.

Starbucks Fashion

CFDA designers Alexander Wang, Billy Reid and Sophie Theallet have recently collaborated with Starbucks to create a line of “fashion-forward” tees for their 40th birthday celebration. I never would have penned the company to dip their feet in the fashion world, but I actually find the collaboration to be kind of cool. One tee in the collection is designed to look as if you have spilled a cup of coffee on yourself and will be sold for $85 both in stores and online. For free, you could spill your own coffee on yourself and get the same look. Would you pay $85 for this t-shirt?

2011 Bumbershoot Recap

Well, I’m officially the last person to write a Bumbershoot recap/review post, but here it is! Better late than never, right? I had so much fun at this year’s 2011 Bumbershoot music festival at Seattle Center. After skipping it last year, I felt right at home returning to the music fest I  grew up loving. Thank you to everyone at One Reel for putting all of their hard work into making this year’s festival one great event.

Bands I saw:

Saturday:

  • Campfire OK
  • Craft Spells
  • Champagne Champagne
  • Natasha Kmeto
  • Emancipator
  • Pickwick
  • Little Dragon
  • STRFKR
  • Minus the Bear

Sunday

  • Mad Rad
  • Broken Social Scene
  • Tennis
  • Warpaint
  • Macklemore
  • Toro y Moi
  • The Kills

Monday

  • Head Like a Kite
  • Big Boi
  • Lemolo
  • Charles Bradley
  • Sharon Van Etten
  • Phantogram

Oh yes, it was a long and exhausting weekend, but I would do it all over again. While there were many incredible acts every day of the festival, I think my favorite would have to be Saturday. I was extremely proud of coffeehaus alums – Campfire OK and Champagne Champagne who just gave it their all on stage that day. Below are my reviews for my top six acts from last weekend:

Campfire OK

There was no better way to kick off my Bumbershoot weekend than with a set by local band Campfire OK. At noon, I found myself front row at the Fountain Lawn Stage bracing myself for the high-energy packed performance that the band is notorious for putting on. Campfire OK is a band with an immense amount of passion, talent and potential for growth. I don’t know about most people, but it is a rare sight to catch me dancing at noon. Only a band like Campfire OK can make me do something that crazy, but it turns out I wasn’t the only one this weekend, because everyone around me was groovin’ along to their songs. Campfire OK’s lasting impression on me came from the fact that the band enjoyed performing for us as much as I enjoyed watching them. If the crowd was dancing, the band members on stage were dancing much harder. Lead singer Mychal pounced on the keys of his piano in a manner of organized chaos while the lovely Melodie Knight engaged the crowd in hand claps. Anytime I heard a solo coming from the band’s magnificent trumpet player, I, along with everyone else, was instantly mesmerized. Believe me when I say that this is only the beginning for Campfire OK, because I am predicting great things for their future, including an upcoming album!

Who Will Get the Pumpkin Spice Latte First?

Starting next week, Starbucks will introduce a new challenge to their fans on Facebook revolving around their popular seasonal drink, the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Fans will compete to show how badly they want the drink to be released first in their city for the season and the winning city will receive the drink one week earlier than the rest of the world!

[The Facebook application] will include three different points-based activities. Beverage fans can earn points for city shout-outs, solving a daily challenge or making a daily creation.

A daily challenge might task a Facebook user to watch a video and answer trivia questions, Wheeler says. A daily creation, for instance, would have a user create and share a postcard for his or her city. “We’re providing the tools for users to create art and promote it,” Wheeler adds.

The contest will run from August 22nd-26th and the winning cities will receive the drink on August 30th.

Starbucks Wedding Proposal

If I could feature all of my favorite weddings, engagement parties, and proposals on Yow Yow! they would cover the entire front page of this website! Three hours – maybe more than three hours – have gone by and I am still perusing the pages of Green Wedding Shoes making sure that I haven’t skipped any posts since I last read it on June 18th. I’ve already gone through 25 pages! There were several weddings that I wanted to show to you all today, but the one that I will be featuring today is an absolutely adorable Starbucks themed proposal. Shane and Mikaela had their first date at Starbucks and when he proposed to her, he wanted to make sure that she remembered where they started. He created a Starbucks set up in the middle of the woods making sure that everything was perfect to the last detail. I cannot handle things like this. Almost every post that I have read has made me squeal with joy and shake with giggles. I’ve never described giggling in that way before, but that’s exactly what happened.

Starbucks’ Bistro Boxes

Today, Starbucks unveiled a new line of meals each under 500 calories. To be honest, I was surprised to find that this was new because I thought they were already a part of the brand. I mean, let’s be real, they’ve got all of their bases covered. I actually am pretty excited about these new bistro boxes though because I think they’d be perfect meals for when I’m on the go. So which one will I try first…the sesame noodles or the tuna salad? Who knows?

For now, check out the rest of the boxes here or try them out at your local Starbucks.

Starbucks Spelling

You can’t give great service without misspelling a few names!

Can you blame those baristas? They are making your coffee and toasting your Hawaiian bagels within mere minutes so what does it matter that they totally and completely butcher your name? Oh yeah – because the misspelling makes you worried that your barista may have missed elementary school or the year in which you were supposed to learn the alphabet.

Flavorpill Seattle Launch

On a typical day, my schedule kind of looks like this:

  • Work
  • School
  • Work
  • Homework
  • (Blog)

Yeah, sometimes blogging gets the shaft, but c’mon I’m a full time student! If I’m lucky and have a small amount of commitments during the week, I can attempt at reading just a few of my 25 daily reads that I am supposed to check every day. HOBviously, I don’t ever get that far. We’ve established that Thursdays are good evenings for us.

Well, I just decided to add another daily read because one of my favorite culture blogs, Flavorwire, will be launching their focus blog on my lovely hometown called Flavorpill Seattle sponsored by Starbucks. Stay tuned for details by visiting Flavorwire here.

Starbucks Celebrates Earth Day!

Hi readers!

Don’t forget to participate in Earth Day tomorrow by bringing your reusable mug or tumbler to Starbucks for free brewed coffee or tea. You can get it either hot or iced – personally – I would go with iced since I hear it’s supposed to be a nice day in Seattle tomorrow.

Enjoy!
