Sub Pop’s Branded Airplane

I love hanging out at Sea-Tac Airport – maybe to an unhealthy extent. If I’m getting dropped off, I go early so that I can have dinner at one of my favorite local spots or shop at the Sub Pop store before heading home. Local vibes are everywhere at the airport and it’s one of the things that I love. Known for being a city with a famous music scene, there is no shortage of love for the community there. The Sub Pop store is easily the best last stop on your way out as you can pick up some great merch – records, tees, etc. You’ll even hear some of Sub Pop’s local artists overhead as you’re walking through the airport.

Now, the record label is taking over the skies! It was just announced today that they’ve got their own branded Boeing 737-800.

“The jet’s wrapping makes it look like a Sub Pop musician’s instrument case, only in much better condition,” Sub Pop co-president and founder Jonathan Poneman said in a statement. “It’s definitely the sickest jet on the tarmac!” Alaska Airlines’ managing director of brand marketing and advertising Natalie Bowman added, “This partnership brings together two independent, local brands that are committed to doing things a little differently.”

Dark and Sub Pop

Tee – Sub Pop Records / Duster – Azalea / Pants – Uniqlo

For months, I had been looking for the perfect duster. I searched high and low at Aritzia, Nordstrom, Madewell, and then at one of my favorite San Francisco boutiques, Azalea, multiple times. The first time, they didn’t have one that was perfect for me, but the second time? It was just right. I love this look for several reasons. The duster is a piece that you can throw on over anything and more often than not, you won’t fail. I like wearing it casually with pants like above, but also with shorter dresses. If there’s anything that I am more cautious about, it’s that the bottom of the duster can sometimes drag on things and while it doesn’t hit the ground (which is gross) it gets pretty darn close. This Sub Pop tee is the third item that I own from this store at the Sea-Tac airport and is becoming a fast favorite. It’s so soft and the dark grey is very Seattle and makes me feel like I’m back home in the Northwest even though I’m far from it. It’s also a very modern updated look to my scene days from when I was an angsty little teenager, but not really all that angsty.

For Sub Pop

Top – Sub Pop / Denim + Cap – Urban Outfitters / Sneakers – Converse

Holy smokes! Look how bebe I look in this photo above. I am late 20’s going on 14 here; the funny thing is though is that this is exactly how I dressed when I was 14 so it’s almost a little bit eerie to be looking at this. Is it weird to say that one of my favorite places is the Sea-Tac Airport? Sometimes I ask my parents to drop me off a little bit earlier than I need for my flight so that I can spend my time there shopping and having one last meal before I take off. Sub Pop Records happens to have a merch store there which I highly recommend everyone checking out because you can get – well – records, so many tees, and other fun gifts. I basically make a purchase every time I drop in and have two tees and a sweatshirt from them. I like this tee a lot for its simplicity, but the material fits like a boys’ tee so it might not be the most comfortable tee to wear. I paired this with denim, Converse, and a backwards baseball cap because I wanted to dress not like myself AT ALL THIS DAY.

Next Day Half-Up

Sweatshirt – Sub Pop / Leggings – Aritzia / Purse – Vince Camuto

We all seem to have this idea of the “morning after” girl being someone in heels and a nice party dress with her makeup all over the place. In my case, I’m just a girl in comfy clothes and a half-up ponytail. For Halloween, I was Pebbles this year! I was so excited about my DIY costume, which really consisted of a sheet of felt that I paid about 50 cents for, a generic green top from Marshalls that I snagged, and my Aritzia black shorts. The hardest part of the costume was finding a bone for my hair. We actually considered using a real dog bone until I realized that I was paying too much for something that was going to make my hair smelly. That’s why props exist. So onto the Halloween shop we went. It was a little bit smaller than we had hoped, but people were able to tell who I was and that is enough for me! The day after celebrating Halloween, I found myself at Stanford Shopping Center for some reason and headed straight there without a shower. We were no longer in costume, thank goodness, but the half-ponytail was evidence of a night out before. I actually kind of love this though and seeing these photos makes me wonder if I should throw my hair up this high more often.

Seattle Girl

screen-shot-2017-01-21-at-3-10-22-pm

Sub Pop Sweatshirt / Leggings – Aritzia / Cap – Urban Outfitters / Sneakers – Nike

This morning we woke up feeling both panicked and with a weight off our shoulders. It’s fitting that in our queue this was the next outfit that we would highlight. Even though this wasn’t recent, I remember how I felt on this day like it was yesterday. Simply weightless and so happy. We may not be 100% right now, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to this.

On the outfit: We’re really feeling that sporty casual look lately. It’s funny because you would’ve never caught me in an outfit like this in college, but as an adult, you just don’t need to dress up every single day. Sometimes you want to be comfy and cozy and believe it or not – Nikes can transform an outfit from sloppy to chick almost instantly.

Sub Pop to Open Record Store At SEA-TAC

I know I said I would try and refrain from writing Seattle posts after I moved away, but who are we kidding? I’ve put a little distance between me and the Seattle blogs I read on a daily basis, but every once in awhile, some news will slip through and I know if I don’t mention it – no one else will. That’s not true. Someone else will write it, but I would prefer it if I did.

Today, I learned that my favorite SEA-TAC airport home of the very intense security checking and some amazing Mac and Cheese at Beechers is getting a record store sponsored by Sub Pop. Does YOUR airport have a record store? That’s what I thought. In Spring 2014, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will open up a new space within the airport to sell current and re-issued LPs from their artist roster along with some Sub Pop merchandise.

Seattle music is continuing to dominate once again. All my frands not from Seattle are going to get musical treats from me, maybe.

Father John Misty – “I’m Writing A Novel” – Video

Josh Tillman, the man known as Father John Misty, and former Fleet Fox drummer, has been touring relentlessly behind last year’s Fear Fun, an album constructed equally upon his highly mythologized “fictional” character and velvety vocals.

Much like the rest of Fear Fun, “I’m Writing A Novel” seems to follow the “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” method, showing footage of cruise-ships, a mysterious woman driving a hearse, and, even, Tillman donning a Napoleonic uniform. We don’t want to spoil everything, though; it’s best to just take it all in.

Endearing Student Tries To Reach Out To Nirvana

Letter courtesy of Sub Pop via The Stranger

This might be the funniest blog post I’ve read all week, but of course, it was completely overshadowed yesterday due to the Macklemob craziness. Sub Pop recently received an email from a student at Virginia Tech asking if Nirvana would record a video for them wishing their university a happy homecoming so that this student could win a homecoming election.

The letter itself is too funny, but also raises some questions for which I have to list out here:

  • NICE stationary, but not very appropriate?
  • Virginia Tech – there’s no way you haven’t found out about this by now, are you slightly embarrassed?
  • Does this girl actually know who Nirvana is?
  • Would Nirvana ever do something like this?
  • The quoted prompt that she wrote for Nirvana to say in the recorded message. HILARIOUS.
  • Did she just really refer to Nirvana as a “her?” Last time I checked, Nirvana was a group consisting of only men.
  • The line “It presents great publicity for them…” pretty sure they don’t need that.
  • The list of performing artists followed by “three famous NFL players.” Sounds appealing.
  • More importantly, Nirvana doesn’t exist anymore. And as The Stranger mentioned in their article said girl would have been negative one-years old when Kurt Cobain died.

It’s too much! Well since Sub Pop figured the girl didn’t really know what she was talking about anyways, they decided to send her a video back giving her exactly what she wanted.

You can check out what happens at the source.

Annual Music Roundup Pt. 1

Fleet Foxes | pic cred. RCRD LBL

It’s almost my favorite time of the year! Well, besides Christmas of course. I am very much looking forward to looking back on my entire 2011 and seeing Yow Yow’s annual recap, posting my 50 favorite songs, sharing with you recap posts from my favorite blogs and getting a closer look at what is to come in 2012. It’s only December 12th, but it has already started. NPR, Urban Outfitters and Seattle’s very own Sub Pop have posted their favorite albums and artists for the year so here they are!

See if your favorites made the cut! If they did, you’re probably right on point. If they didn’t…where have you been all year?

Updated:

Don’t worry my list will be coming shortly, I’m just going to let my music favorites marinate a little bit longer.
