Our Favorite Winter Trend: Velvet

Talulah Manhattan Pant – $65

I paid a visit to my favorite retailer, Aritzia, a few weeks ago and I was surprised to see that their store was stocked front to back with the most beautiful and stunning velvety pieces. I wasn’t a 90’s child that wore a lot of velvet back in the day. I might have owned one piece of clothing in the fabric and I can for sure say that it wasn’t a favorite because it’s completely not memorable to me today. I had my reservations at first, but as I started making my way through the store, my hesitation turned into curiosity and then very quickly to lust for this very soft and romantic piece of fabric. Are any of you excited to be wearing velvet in 2016?! Maybe you just need a little push… here are 5 pieces from Aritzia to get you started:

How We Holiday Party in 2015

Lovers + Friends Primrose Dress – $170

No matter how badly you want things to go a certain way, no amount of effort or time can change what’s supposed to actually happen. You would think that I would’ve learned this valuable lesson by now. For the last two years, I’ve worn black dresses – both very similar to each other. So in my third holiday party with my company, I vowed to be a little bit different. This year was going to be the year that I wore a white dress! So we started the search and the dream dress that I had wanted ran out the day after I had found it online. The dress that I ended up buying was beautiful and a steal as it was 50% off, but it didn’t feel like it was the one – I just wasn’t sure so I had to go to the mall and do my due dilligence – try on all the holiday party dresses to be sure that I was happy with the one I had purchased. Sure enough, I found one and it wasn’t white, but it was the one. You know how sometimes people talk about when they’ve found the one and they just know and they have no other reason that they give, but that one reason? That’s how I felt about this dress today and I can’t say the same for the others.

Now that I’ve finally got THE dress, we can write this post without much worry. I’ll be sure to share the one I actually wear next month in a later post, but since I’ve done some pre-research, the selection I’ve provided below is real good. I’ve scoured everything.

If you’ve been to the mall at all recently, then you’ve been noticing that some of your favorite stores are putting high-necked cropped tops on display. I had been holding off on buying something like this for a long time, but was always so curious about owning this type of piece. When I was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago, I actually tried this on in purple and I remember feeling so self-conscious about wearing something that would show a bit of my stomach. Dresses with a slit in the back or in the side, sure. That doesn’t feel like that much skin to me, but showing some skin in the front? Well, that’s another story. Going into Aritzia the other day, I was feeling a little bit more confident so I gave it a second go. The XSmall made me feel like I was drowning in it, but the XXSmall was just right. It was black, chic, and fitted. But the bigger question was, “Could I pull this off at work?” If the answer is no, then there’s no point in buying it. One of the best perks about my job is that I can pretty much wear what I want within reason and I don’t typically like to push the boundaries very much. I used to hate working in finance and having to buy a second wardrobe – one where I knew I wouldn’t be wearing most pieces the majority of the time. Chelsea – who’s my girl at Aritzia handed me a gray slinky skirt to try on with the top and while it worked, I still didn’t feel completely 100% about it. So what’d I do? I bought it anyways and told myself that I would find a way to make it work with a piece at home. Happy to report that we made it happen today and it wasn’t that bad! It worked with actually the very first piece I ever bought at Aritzia – an olive green fitted skirt. Now, let’s go find other pieces to make this work.

Wilfred Teigen Dress$85 $80

I was invited to shop the MAJOR sale early at Aritzia last week, but unfortunately just couldn’t make it out to their store to try on all the goodies. Instead, I waited until it was open to the public and to my surprise they still had all of the things I wanted in all of the sizes that I was looking for. I would’ve been crushed if I had missed the sale because half of my wardrobe comes from them. This sale was so important to me that I went straight there after hopping off the plane from my trip in San Diego.

I actually own the dress (top) in burgundy, but accidentally shrunk it once to a length that is barely cutting it. I decided this time to purchase it in black and in xsmall (one size larger than my original) just to have that extra baggy look. Also, I’ve been wanting this skort forever and while it’s not a huge cut from the original price, it seemed like a good enough excuse to take the plunge and buy it.

Proud Owner: Birthday Edition

Wilfred Free Yasmin Dress

I’ve been doing such a good job lately of saving my moneys and it’s something that I’m actually really proud of. Other than purchases made on a gift card, I haven’t bought any new clothes for myself in what feels like two months. Turns out that I never really needed to anyways. However, with my birthday just around the corner, I thought I deserved some new pieces and was pretty excited to splurge a bit on things that I knew I would love. This year, I decided that I wanted two dresses – one to wear the night I celebrate my birthday and another one to wear to work on the day of my birthday! Both dresses are from Aritzia and I adore them for very different reasons.

I have a long sleeved sweater dress similar to the one above, but I didn’t feel like it would be casual enough to wear out – plus I don’t want to wear long sleeves out. I decided to opt for this more laid back look with a sexy back cutout. I think it’s kind of fun! I’m really excited to not only wear this dress for my birthday, but for other occasions too. If this dress looks familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen it during a “Closet” post that I’ve done.

The dress below is just really pretty and quirky. I really liked the print and the black and white is very versatile. I tried this dress in an electric blue too which would be great if I were headed to a tropical island, but I didn’t find it to be as wearable as this one.

Aritzia Fall 2014 Lookbook

TNA

I was having dinner with my dad earlier this week on the outdoor patio of Cascal when I noticed two things – the winds were picking up and the outdoor overhead heaters were turned on. Surely, that’s a sign that fall is on its way and we no longer will be in the sweltering heat. As much as I love the summer, I am very excited for fall. the cozy knit oversized sweaters, dresses with tights, and of course the pumpkin spice lattes that debut this coming Monday. Aritzia is one of my favorite retailers and I constantly live in their pieces no matter what season it is. Here is just a taste of what they are offering for the fall and we can’t wait.
