My Biggest Issue with The Bachelorette Premiere This Week

It’s no secret that I have a love / hate relationship with The Bachelorette. I don’t always believe that finding love on a reality television show is possible (except for Catherine and Sean!) but I can’t stop myself from watching anyways because I’m generally rooting for good things to come out of the show. I went to my first viewing party with co-workers this past Monday and it was really fun to explain to some of them how exactly the show works and to see how quickly they changed their minds between Britt and Kaitlyn. We had to remind them that the producers completely lead audiences to believe a certain way because of the way they edit things and how calculated every scene is.

Before the season started, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I wasn’t happy about the guys having to choose between Britt and Kaitlyn, but I can see why the producers thought this would be entertaining. In my opinion, it didn’t seem fair. The girls already have to go through enough and just when they think they’ve been chosen they still have to compete? I’m glad that this was done and over with after the first episode though.

However, my problems didn’t end here. I was actually livid about a remark I heard from one of the guys on the show and even more upset that the media completely grazed over this instead focusing on the intoxicated contestant that was booted before the rose ceremony and the slut shaming that we saw from Kaitlyn having to apologize for her actions. (we’ll discuss this in another post after we watch the episode where this happens.) The line in question that I am referring to is when one guy was discussing who he’d pick, “Britt is more of your trophy wife. Kaitlyn is more of your wife.”

I’m not oblivious. I know that trophy wives exist and I know that there are women in this world that are happy being labeled a trophy wife, but you are not allowed to just refer to someone as a trophy wife. When you say that someone is a trophy wife, does that make you feel better about yourself as a man? Does that make you feel more masculine? This guy just met Britt for the first time and assumed because she was naturally very pretty that she didn’t have more to offer than being a trophy wife. I was really disappointed to hear this and am even more curious now to hear Britt’s reaction on this having seen the first episode. A guy once told me to my face that he believed that “Asian women were the modern day trophy wives.” Really? Asian women? All of them? He might as well have thrown a drink in my face because that was the equivalent of how I felt when I heard that. In case you were wondering what happened after that? Friendship over. For the men that read this blog, please. Please. Don’t ever say this to a women. Unless they want to be referred to in this way, it is a degrading statement and it’s 2015, we’ve come a long way to be put back into this position.

Next Season on The Bachelorette…

25 men will go on dates with both Kaitlyn AND Britt! For the first time ever in Bachelor/Bachelorette history, there will be two bachelorettes and they pretty much were the babes of last season’s The Bachelor. In the beginning of the season, Britt was the frontrunner for The Bachelor, but seeing Kaitlyn get as far as she did, others were convinced that she would be the next Bachelorette. Tough choice, but having both of them will definitely make up for some entertainment.

Apparently the guys will go after both of them and ultimately decide who they think will make the better wife. Will there be one of them left standing? Will both of them go after the same guy? Will Britt and Kaitlyn each have a rose to give out at the very end? So many questions about logistics. We’re looking forward to May 18th when the next season starts!

Wedding Mondays

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/119353451]

There really is no perfect wedding video for today than this one by Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock on the day of The Bachelor finale! Real talk though – we are full of love after this weekend. Today, Mandi and I attended The Bold Italic’s Love/Make (hipster) wedding expo and we pretty much had the best day ever. Don’t worry, we’ll be writing a whole post about this later. Des was one of my favorite Bachelor contestants and Bachelorettes. I’m not sure why, but I always felt like I identified with her the most. Before appearing on the show, she actually worked in the wedding industry at a dress store, but we also just thought she was the biggest sweetheart. I still remember telling my own friends, “When Des cries, I cry.” It’s been awhile since that season, but I don’t think that was a lie!

Now, Catherine and Sean are my favorite Bachelor couple, but I really like Des and Chris too mostly because they like to remain a little bit more private. They are both living in Seattle now, but got married in California.

Desiree’s custom-designed gown from Maggie Sottero is an absolute dream. I don’t see too many one-shoulder dresses that I love, but this one is something else.

The Bachelorette Season Finale Last Night

Spoilers ahead! Last nights “After the Final Rose” was a jaw dropper. We all know what could potentially “happen” during a Fantasy Suite date, but there’s a little part of us that doesn’t – unless it gets outed like it did last night. In the past, contestants like Emily Maynard and Sean Lowe have passed on the Fantasy Suite, whereas Juan Pablo clearly didn’t. With Andi, we weren’t quite sure. That is, until Nick – the runner-up aired out their dirty laundry for all to see asking her directly why she made love to him if she didn’t love him.

Embarrassing.

I’ve been reading on a couple of blogs today and there are a few different stances. Some are wondering if Nick slut-shamed her. Some are wondering if he had been dying to say something like that on live television because she had refused to see him since the show ended.

Here are my thoughts and I’ll try and condense them:

  • Nick seems like a pretty sensitive guy. He is dealing with a heartbreak or maybe it’s just for show, but he looks a little bit torn up. I don’t think he meant to slut shame her because he probably likes sluts (like those on watchmygirlfriend) as much as the next man! But I do think maybe for him (and there are many people that have this point of view!) being intimate in a relationship means a lot more to him than maybe for her. I don’t think it’s wrong for him to question that.
  • If it’s bitterness or resentment towards Andi, then yes – she’s right, it is definitely a low blow. It’s true that that is private and no one really needs to know that.
  • Thirdly, didn’t it seem like everyone was airing out her personal life last night on that episode? First, Nick then Josh and wanting babies? That’s what she gets for being on The Bachelorette I guess.

Overall, … I wish she would have ended up with Marcus. Okay, no. Nick was not the fan favorite throughout the show and I don’t know if people would have been all that happy if they had ended up together anyways. We finished another season though. We hope Andi’s happy. Please tell us who the next Bachelor is. I hope it is Arie.

Andy Grammer On The Bachelorette

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btLgEtoiIi4]

Two Bachelorette posts in one day?! Well, this is a much more special post than the rap video I posted this morning. Andy Grammer will forever be so near and dear to my heart. It was amazing to watch him perform his two songs on last night’s episode especially since just a few years ago Kevin and I were just watching him do his thing on 3rd Street Promenade with small demos for sale and handouts with his name and contact info on it. I am elated every time I catch Andy performing somewhere amazing or when I hear his songs used on a show or playing in the stores. It’s a constant reminder of what I used to love about being a part of the music industry and just how much I miss it!

That Bachelorette Rap Music Video

I adore Des, but this is one of the weirdest dates I’ve ever seen on the show. They need to bring in some writers for some new ideas.

Embarrassing.
