The Cobrasnake and His Influence on Hipster Culture

Does this photo jog any memories for anyone? No, I’m not talking about that Myspace swag that girl has got. Way back when, we used to be a little obsessed with a photographer named Mark Hunter AKA The Cobrasnake. He was the ultimate hipster and he had a very distinct way of shooting his photos. In fact, we loved them so much that in Yow Yow’s original layout, we would swap out our header every month for about 2-3 years for one of Mark’s photos. I remembered that I both loved and hated doing this. I loved it because it made the blog feel a little more fresh every month, but I hated it because it was so much pressure! Mark gained popularity fast and it was tough for me to be able to keep up with his photo postings, but I didn’t want to miss any published album for fear of missing the perfect header shot. Sometimes, I’d be backlogged for months catching up. While I loved these photographs for the way he shot them, I also was a little mesmerized with his lifestyle – constant parties, music festivals, tagging along with his bff Steve Aoki and then-girlfriend Cory Kennedy who was really just an IT girl in her own right. There were celebrities everywhere. There were also photos that you didn’t want to see – the ones that featured nudity, intimate moments, and my least favorite… vomit – especially when in action. Such is life though, right? And Mark captured it all. It’s been a few years since we’ve visited the site, but it’s still up and running! Mark is still taking photos and these days featuring a new wave of celebrities probably – gone are the days in which Paris and Nicky Hilton reigned. Bring on the Bella Hadid’s! In this Vice article, Mark Hunter looks back to describe the last 10 years of shooting.

Love/Hate Relationships w/ Hipsters

I had the inspiration to write this post yesterday after coming across Flavorwire’sHipsters on TV,” in which they covered some of their favorite hipster characters over the years starting at Happy Days’ Fonzie all the way to Parks and Recreation’s April Ludgate. Not entirely sure how I would begin this post, I decided to give myself an extra day to let it simmer so that I could write something coherent and not too biased.

Why do people love hipsters?

Why do people hate hipsters?

The only way for me to approach this post was to answer these two questions and to keep them separate from each other, but of course I let in several other factors. I remembered that one scene from Juno where Ellen Page talks about the guy (Sean Cameron from Degrassi) who always treats her like dirt, but secretly would date her if he had the chance. I thought about the article I read earlier this week in which I learned that The New Girl was renewed for a second season and it was because the whole world was infatuated by her character. Somehow I couldn’t seem to get this newsfeed post out of my head that a friend posted about hipsters not being able to dance and then proceeding to blame the entire city of Seattle as being a failure for it.

My Favorite Hipsters

Ever since Dov Charney announced the hipster era was “out” several months ago, I became concerned. As a part-time hipster, I guess I don’t really understand how it can go out of style. Being a hipster is not just about the fashion or the music. It is a culture. It is a way of living.

Okay, who are we kidding? While I accept the hipster lifestyle, there’s still something about it that makes me giggle. I actually am amused by the hipster culture. While the rest of the world slash the bros at my school find that it is something to joke about, you’d be surprised at how ahead of the game they are. Hipsters all over have paved the way for various trends that began years ago, but are just now turning mainstream as described in a recent Flavorwire post. When I think of this, I am reminded of the scene from The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda puts Andy in her place by telling her that her retail store sweater was hand picked for her by the people in that room because they made that sweater what it was. I know that that movie has nothing to do with hipsters, but all you need to know is that the hipsters ARE Miranda.

Below are some of my favorite hipsters of our time today:

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been a bad ass ever since she made her acting debut back in 1994 with The Professional. Since then, she has blown us away with her acting abilities and even her rapping skills. She may have portrayed hipster-ish character Sam in Garden State, but we know that she’s a true one at heart. Natalie is a Harvard grad, vegetarian, and an activist!

If I were located in Los Angeles, I would be ALL OVER THIS. Unfortunately, I’m not, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want my lucky LA readers to miss out on this opportunity. Go hang out with my idol, Mark Hunter AKA Cobrasnake, tomorrow at this event and purchase lots and lots of American Apparel goodies for meeee. The deals are spectacular, I’ve never been so jealous.

Halfway Mark!

My project for the year is halfway done!! I have 5 ish months to go until I have successfully kept my blog alive for one year.

Will I continue the blog after this year is over? I have no idea haha I won’t really be able to determine that until I’ve reached the end.

I just wanted to share some statistics slash facts with you all.

–  I never wanted to name this blog “Yow Yow!” When I first started, I didn’t have a title for the blog so I put that saying in there temporarily thinking I would change it later but I forgot. I actually credit that saying to Miss Sokina.

– I have worked with one marketing company since the creation of this blog and have entered one contest.

– I have had 34,357 visits to Yow Yow!

– 711 Posts, 307 Comments and 1,907 Tags.

– All of my headers are shot by Mark Hunter of The Cobrasnake and I change them monthly.

– I have had one heated scandal on my blog – The revealing of Dora the Explorer’s new look. Who knew that would be so controversial?

– It was also my top post – “Dora Grows Up. Gets Sexier While Doing So.” (10,351 views)

– In the month of June, I had 10, 603 hits, my highest yet.

– My busiest day was March 9th 2009 in which I had 1,862 views

– My blog does not count my own visits.

– – – – – – – – –

I guess all I have to say is thank you! I never expected this blog to reach any outside sources. When I created it I thought it would only be for my friends back home and at Seattle University, but I’m excited about the attention it is receiving and I’m having a lot of fun while doing it. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask and I’ll answer them in a blog post.

Thanks again!
