The Falling Man

We’re taking a break from the NYFW coverage for a second so that we can focus a little bit on remembering 9/11, which happens to be tomorrow. It’s hard to believe that it has already been 15 years. I can’t even believe that 15 years of my own life has gone by remembering this tragedy. I was 11 when it happened and I was having breakfast before school when I was watching the coverage alongside my dad. When I got to school – 6th grade – I didn’t want to miss what was happening. I remember being the only kid that raised my hand to ask if we could continue seeing the coverage on our TV in the classroom. My teacher made the right decision that day in saying “no” to me and I didn’t know that then, but I later learned afterwards.

“The Falling Man” is an iconic image from the day of the tragedy. Many died that day from an array of things, but something that has always stuck with me was those images of people jumping out of the tower. At what point did they feel like there was no other option than to just jump? What was going through their heads at that time? Of course, we’ll never get those answers, but I enjoyed listening to Richard Drew’s account of that day – the photographer being that image.

Family Dinners steer kids away from drinking and drug use

Yesterday, Time Magazine published a new study showing that family dinners lessen the risk of children getting involved with drinking and drugs.

By having family dinners, parents are able to actively listen to their children. In general, it’s not about where you are, but rather, who you are with.

In a way, it makes clear sense. I’m sure it is something that we have always kind of known, but now a study just reaffirms this assumption.

I know these statistics reflect data collected about children, but this is definitely something I still do today with my own parents. Old habits never die.
