Two Door Cinema Club – Next Year (RAC remix)

When Two Door Cinema Club came out as a band, they were all I ever listened to. Kevin and I saw them at concert, I had memorized the whole album, they were the soundtrack to my commute to school and back. I actually haven’t listened to them in the longest time so when this song came up on shuffle or random the other day from someone’s playlist, I knew it sounded a bit familiar. I’m looking forward to re-introducing them back into my life again!

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Want

I will never get tired of listening to their album. I actually saw Two Door Cinema Club last Dec. at Deck the Hall Ball and unfortunately, it wasn’t a very good performance. But I don’t think it was them that put on a poor performance, it was just the environment of the concert. Deck the Hall Ball was packed with an all-star lineup, but everyone was rushed and put on half sets pretty much. It wasn’t the kind of concert I wanted to be at and it wasn’t intimate especially in the dark hole that is Key Arena. Regardless of this and even though I’ve seen them live once, I have seen videos of their performances countless times even on a live stream. They’ve been incredible. So is this one.

Deck the Hall Ball 2011 Recap

King Mark Foster would like to welcome you into this extravagant holiday concert post. [For some REAL photos from the event, check out Dave Lichterman’s work here.]

Lineup:

  • Grouplove
  • Two Door Cinema Club
  • Young the Giant
  • Foster the People
  • Cage the Elephant
  • Death Cab For Cutie
  • Mumford & Sons

Year after year, I have always dismissed radio station sponsored concerts, but this year, I made an exception. As soon as I saw the lineup for the first four bands (without the headliners being announced,) I was all in. Two Door and Foster are bands that I have been wanting to see for a very long time and Young the Giant and Grouplove are bands that are quickly on the rise. The concert started promptly at 4PM and didn’t end until what I imagine was probably 11PM. I left two songs into Mumford & Sons, but before you bite my head off about that – allow me to explain later on. Kevin and I had pretty decent seats, which I was grateful for cause I get claustrophobic in general admission. Overall, it was definitely an experience for me and one that I will never forget.

[The view from our seats]

From the event, I learned a few things. The first – in regards to bands – is that the set list is crucial. Young the Giant kicked off their set with my favorite song, “Apartment,” but probably could have got the crowd going more with “My Body,” or a song similar to that since most bands wouldn’t start with their hit single. If you don’t start off with a strong song, you can introduce yourselves with a unique intro. Grouplove entered the stage to a Kanye song and right away, everyone was like, “Who is this band?” These days, I’m a really strange concert attendee because of my Blackberry note taking. I mean – it’s meant for posts like these! At shows, I find it hard to enjoy it completely because aside from singing along to songs and dancing to them, I’m constantly fixated on the band – how they perform, the mechanics of it all, their movement, their interaction with the crowd.

In The Open

About two years ago, I wrote a post about La Blogotheque, a music blog based out of Paris that would host spontaneous performances by some of our favorite musicians including Phoenix and Feist. Today, I’d like to introduce to you another blog with a similar concept called In The Open.

“We are people who love music to put it simply. Ranging from writers, designers, photographers, and cinematographers we all love music equally and want to spread as much music as possible in just about every format we possibly can.”

In The Open does just that while allowing musicians to record a performance in open spaces such as parks, woods or even overlooking skyscrapers. I’m sure musicians appreciate this so much because it is rare for them to be able to sit out at these places and just perform – especially for a park – without being hounded or given song requests. It’s sort of a trade off a musician makes after making it big so it’s great to hear that In The Open is providing this type of space for them.

Two Door Cinema Club – Eat That Up, It’s Good For You

So…this is my fourth Two Door Cinema Club song that I am featuring for the “Song of the Day.” What can I say? It’s a great CD. If you don’t have it by now, you should. During my lunch break today, I decided to watch this video because a) I love the song and 2) it showcases a storyline of a couple’s life beginning at the honeymoon stage and ending with… well – we all know how it’s going to end. It’s funny because just last week, Kevin shared with me a short film featuring Miss Cathy Nguyen on the exact same thing! Feel free to check it out here.

A little tip? Might not want to watch the music video while you’re nomming. Motion sickness failure, but still what an incredible video!

Two Door Cinema Club – Undercover Martyn

This past weekend, I made plans to see them in concert at Neumos, but unfortunately did not grab tickets in time before it sold out the night of. You would think that I would have learned my lesson after this same thing happened to me with Minus the Bear back in 2008, but I did not.

Sadly, I missed an incredible concert. I did, however, find this awesome video of them doing “Undercover Martyn” acoustic.
